McCarthy: Wonderful Finish By Celina But Result Tough on Burton
Saturday, 28th Oct 2017 18:24

Town boss Mick McCarthy hailed sub Bersant Celina’s “wonderful finish” 89th minute freekick winner during the 2-1 victory at Burton but admitted the result was tough on the Brewers, who had deservedly led 1-0.

Asked whether the script written was when Celina stepped up to take the freekick, the Town fans having spent much of the half calling for the on-loan Manchester City winger’s introduction, he said: “I don’t know but I’m glad it turned out that way.”

Moving on to the terrace calls for Celina to be brought on, he added: “I don’t give a s––e about that, by the way. They don’t go on because of that, let me clear that up.

“In fact there’s more chance of him not going on when they start telling me what to do. And yes, I am a belligerent f–, let’s just clear that up.

“He’d every chance of going on when the game gets stretched. I don’t think it’s a game for him, when we’re having to head balls out and fight and scrap but with 10 minutes to play it is, strangely enough.

“I though Wardy did well and Kevin Bru did well and Bersant, it was a wonderful finish and he's celebrated with the fans and thrown his shirt in and they all love him. He’s maybe given the bird to me with the jump but I don’t mind that, that’s what he’s paid for. He goes on, scores the goal, he’s the hero, fabulous.

“Tell you what, there were some other heroes there today that kept a clean sheet to half-time and kept it to the score it was. They enabled him to do that, good luck to him, he was brilliant.”

McCarthy admitted that the Blues needed a result going into the match - “For sure, absolutely” - and conceded that much of the afternoon was tough for his team: “At half-time I was tempted to change it then. Not to put Bersant on, just in case you’re thinking that, but Kevin Bru I’d considered.

“I spoke to TC and he made the point that it was the toughest 45 minutes we’d had, certainly with the conditions, [so we decided] let’s see how we get on, enough time to give them a fair crack of the whip.

“I thought Tristan had a tough time today but he’s been brilliant, he’s 17, and it was hard. We played great last week and we got f– all. We’ve not played well today and won. I’ll give all credit to my players for scrapping it out because we’ve had to.”

He agreed that Burton can feel hard done by: “Absolutely, but it’s not breaking my heart, I have to be honest.”

Quizzed on Celina’s somewhat ambiguous tweet - “Two months until new year. Can’t wait” - which some have taken to mean he’s itching for his spell with Town to end early in January, McCarthy said: “He’s factually correct, isn’t he? He’s a f–-ing brighter lad than I thought he was!

“He’s our player and he might play at Cardiff and he’ll be happy then, won't he? Good luck to him.”

McCarthy confirmed that his loan is for the season - “For 12 months” - and the deal is likely to be along the lines of Tom Lawrence's spell last season which could have been cut short in January but only if agreed by all three parties, the two clubs and the player.

When questioned whether the Kosovo international is frustrated, the Town boss responded: “Ask him.”

Has he said he is to McCarthy, having said he felt his time had come earlier in the season?

“He is [a confident young man], and I’ve also got 18, 19, 20 others that I have to take care of as well.”

The Town boss says he fully understands why fans have taken to him: “I do and I like him when he does that. He’s done great today, hasn’t he? I’m really delighted with him.”

Regarding the derogatory chants aimed in his own direction by the Town support, something which he hoped wouldn’t resurface this season, McCarthy added: “Listen, unless somebody decides otherwise, you’ve got me, boring old big nose, f–-ing fart with 's–-e football' until May. Unless somebody decides different.”

Does it bother him? “It hurts me for the players because it can affect them. It doesn’t affect me, I have to be honest.

“I’d prefer it the other way when we changed the hit parade for six games, but it’s back. I can tolerate it.”

Kevin Bru made his first appearance of the season from the bench and impressed his manager: “He was great, wasn’t he? I said to everybody, in front of all the players, I was delighted with him.

“His attitude has been great. Mind, he hasn’t been ostracised, he’s not been asked to train with the kids, he’s not been pushed out, he’s been training with us and been away and done his international stuff. Really thrilled with him, he deserves a lot of credit for the way he’s played today.”

Does the performance put the Mauritius international, who was told he could move on in the summer, back in his thoughts? “Quite clearly he’s never been out of my thoughts as he’s played today.

“Circumstances dictate certain things. Emyr Huws is injured, Tom Adeyemi’s injured, Teddy Bishop’s injured, Luke Hyam’s injured.

“I’ve got two teenagers [Tristan Nydam and Flynn Downes] who have been doing great but it gets tough for them in the Championship and I thought it was a day to have him on the bench and contribute if necessary, which he’s done. I thought he was good.”

Martyn Waghorn took his total to seven for the season since joining from Rangers with the equaliser.

“Let’s hope that continues, he’s been excellent, everybody’s pleased with him,” McCarthy said.

“He did great with the goal because he was unhappy with their goal because we had a throw-in and it ended up as a corner. And between him and the thrower we lost it and it ends up as a corner and it ends up in our net.

“He wasn’t best pleased, so he made up for that. Good luck to Bersant, he gets the headlines today, it’s wonderful.”

Burton boss Nigel Clough admitted it hurt to lose the game: “That’s going to sting for a while, an awful long while. It was very, very harsh to lose that game today on the balance of the play and balance of the effort that went in, chances created and everything else.

“We scored a goal, we haven’t done that in five and a half games, so that was a bonus, but we should have scored more than one today.

“It wasn’t just chances, it was situations leading to chances. We had great situations in the first half today and didn’t make chances out of them.

“But then we got the goal and there is an element of it not dropping for us in the penalty area without a doubt. And you look at their first goal, the cross has gone in, it’s been half-cleared and it’s just dropped straight in Waghorn’s path. We’d like one to drop for us like that.”

MM's priorities:
1. Not be proved wrong
2. Stick it to his critics
3. Prop up his ego
4. Demonstrate physical, direct style of football can still be successful
5. Be loyal to his favourite players
...
99. A successful team and club.

These past two seasons he's turned into Roy Keane mark II. Doubling-down instead of admitting he is wrong. Spiky, defensive and stubbornly in-denial of inconvenient facts. Children read these post-match interviews - they are shameful and bring the club into disrepute.

This guy is unbelievable. The sooner he's out of our club the better. I've supported Town for 50 years and have never heard a more arrogant, foul mouthed manager for any club.

Can someone please ask Mick what was the point in signing Celina if he's not going to give the guy a decent run?..he's now scored 4 times in a handful of appearances (that's twice the contribution from the un-inspiring/undroppable Skuse in over 4 years)...i'm sure Celina contributing 10-15 goals this season will be of more use than Skuse knocking the ball aimlessly sideways/backwards for 46 games.

As for sending on Bru to pi55 the fans off for chanting Celina's name?!...well that's something you'd expect in a kid's playground, not from a bloke pushing 60...grow up you tool.

Can I report MM for an offensive post? This man is supposed to represent our club when commenting after the game. All he does is become an embarrassment to us all by all insisting on taking the conversation into the gutter. I think that those making any decisions about his future are running scared of him. We all deserve to be treated with respect, and I would include all the players in that comment. Sadly all very lacking...

Oh dear, three bad interviews in one week. First it was Didsy; basically I'm off in Juneand I just need to play ok to get a contract elsewhere. Then MM on Thursday; I'll decide what I do with my contract in May and nobody is going to tell me what to do. AAnd then today, slagging off fans' attitudes and Celina's desire to play is just too much. I know heS had rotten luck with injuries but as he said today he ‘s so unnecessarily a belligerent f.. I've supported him from Day 1 but his attitude has finally got the better of me. He really cannot take opposing views and responds in really nasty language. Today' the day I finally join the MM out calls.....and it really upsets me to say so.

Must admit I thought we would be stuck with MM until his contract runs out in May before this interview, now I'm not so sure.

If he carries on like this even Evans will have no alternative but to terminate his employment.

Well done Mick. A brilliant win against the mighty Burton, a classy interview and now 9 points out of 27. It is clear for all to see why you say you are such a great manager. It's a shame that our supporters don't appreciate how lucky we are to have you here. No one could blame you if you decided to move on to fulfil your destiny and be recognised as one of the best managers of all time. Thanks for all the success and brilliant football you have given us. We really don't deserve to have you as our manager, so F OFF you arrogant old fool.

Phil,

I have seen Mick interviewed on tv/ heard him on the radio and he doesn't use expletive language. Why do you choose to transcribe the comments he makes with his sweary mary hat on?

Poor old Mick, he has turned into a sad old man, out of touch with entertaining football, out of touch with the great majority of people who help to pay his inflated salary, out of touch with inter-personal skills, out of touch with common decency.

Difficult to see how , as a very senior person in a large organisation like ITFC, he is allowed to punctuate his media interviews with profanities. Most other large organisations would warn their member of staff to stop the utterances or they would be sacked. Unfortunately the owner of ITFC is happy to put up with McCarthy's swearing, cursing and slagging off supporters because it saves him the cost of seeing him out of the door early with a shed load of money.

I can't see how McCarthy can come back from the diatribe uttered today. The soon he is gone the better.

The word obnoxious comes to mind.

Hopefully what is happening at this once great club will soon be over.

This shows MM for what he is ….. intellectually thick and certainly not what ITFC want . This man can never and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Sir Bobby Robson either as an individual or as a manager. He seems to be football thick too though . Burton have a very big side , Turner and McFazaden at the back are absolutely huge . They have not grown since last week or indeed since we played them last . So , lets play 4 strikers ,each one no more than 6 foot and in very windy conditions we will kick it long in the air to them!!!!!!!. Brilliant !!!!!! Result ----lose every ball. MM you are not a genius like you think . You are a fake . You have stolen a career as a 'manager' . Role on May and let the celebrations begin when you collect your stuff. You will not be missed by many i'm afraid

Not really sure what people expect MN to say - sounds like he was getting dogs abuse for the bulk of the second half - he makes a tactical change that wins us the game and takes his team to one point below the playoff and higher than a lot of other teams paying higher wages and transfer fees - yet still people aren't happy

I am struggling to think of another manager we have had that has suffered this sort of abuse when the team are so high up the table

Great 3pts and 1 point off playoffs. Well done to players to get fighting till the end. It brings confidence back in to squad.

Glad our supporters went home happy...not happy though McCarthy scraped this win to save his bacon with an unconvincing display. I wonder if we can repeat this last minute win against top half teams?...I think not!

Wow!

We win away and not one comment about it. Top ten, point off top six, a game in hand and it's all about the fact MM swore and said that he wouldn't be making substitutions based on chants.

You lot are truly pathetic - You should be embarassed to call yourselves fans of this club.

You Sir, are a pr@€k! You are an embarrassment to the club. You're vulgar, arrogant and devoid of any respect for the players or supporters of this club. Your tactics are archaic, dated and clueless and the sooner you are gone the better for all concerned.

Hi yorkshire.

There is much more to this than simply our position in the table.

This thin skinned man with a vastly inflated opinion of himself and his abilities has today achieved a new low even by his low, low standards it surely must be time for Marcus to act to remove him before he does anymore damage to our beloved ITFC's reputation.

He has no respect for the supporters, the club of anything other than his pay cheque. No man should survive after this foulmouthed outburst and his blatant disregard for his employers and his customers.

@yorkshire, what's there to be happy about? Shouldn't have won today, but somehow did! The writing is on the wall, check out performances throughout,at very least this campaign ( last season ruddy awful and most of season before ) and you'll see how fortunate we are to be sitting top half of league. We will slid down that table slowly but steadily ... wait and see!

What exactly are you trying to say, Warktheline?

You are definitely one of those that has whinged about MM playing too many loan players and not enough youth.

Is 3 points irrelevant to you? Are you comfortable as a hypcrite? People such as yourself are only happy when we lose and you have the chance to come on here and whine about it. Actually, you now seem to come on here and whine when we win. Who needs supporters like you?

The McCarthy cheerleaders need to look at the bigger picture. Five years of mostly turgid football, negative tactics and often plain tactical ineptitude from Mick. Look at the results so far this season: 7 wins, 4 of which were against teams now in the bottom four, 3 others against teams in 15th, 18th & 19th. We've lost every game against teams 14th and above. Mick's style of play can grind-out wins against struggling sides but, faced with a quality opponent, he has fallen short every time of asking.

Make no mistake, this club is in a false position right now thanks to a kind fixture list in the first six weeks or so. We're bang on course for another season of mid-table obscurity.

McCarthy has often shown contempt for the fans with his arrogance and stubbornness. I see no personal attachment to this club other than it being a safe job thanks to Evans' apathy.

Time for a change. He's lost most of the fans.
