McCarthy Delighted With Display But Frustrated by Late Goal as McGoldrick Requires Surgery
Wednesday, 22nd Nov 2017 23:01

Town boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with his side’s “great” performance during Wednesday’ night’s 2-2 draw but was frustrated by their “naivety” as they conceded Sheffield Wednesday’s injury-time equaliser and seething that Glenn Loovens wasn’t red-carded for the fourth-minute challenge on David McGoldrick, which has left the Blues striker needing surgery tomorrow.

Reflecting on his team’s display said:“I thought we were different class tonight, I thought we were great, we played really well. It was a really positive performance, I’m delighted with the way we played.

“Obviously annoyed at not taking the three points and our naivety with two minutes to go. But I can forgive them that if they play like that every week and we’ll win more games than we lose.

“It was a bit of quality from them, but we’ve had about seven little mistakes in all of that. The first one should just have been kicked out for a throw-in, flick it up, put it in the stand, do what you want, just don’t lose it and don’t let them break on us.

“And when they did there were little mistakes along the line. That’s how it happens. I guess they’ll look at the goals we scored and think they made mistakes as well.”

Despite the result, McCarthy’s post-match chat to his players was positive: “My team-talk to them [was] and [I don’t want] anybody coming in with a big sad face tomorrow thinking they’re the only one who is upset about it.

“We played well and we should take the positives out of it. Yes, you may be disappointed. Well, put it in your bag, take it to Villa and play like that again and we’ll win more games than we’ll lose.

“The overall performance was really good. It’s still rankles when you’ve played like that and you’ve conceded in the last minute, but I guess Leonid Slutsky on Saturday when we scored after 88 minutes was feeling exactly the same. What goes around comes around, I guess.”

Regarding McGoldrick’s injury, he added: “He’s got a gash, I’ve seen a picture of it, it’s probably as long as my finger and probably as deep.

“I think they’re saying he’s going to need surgery tomorrow, I believe. And it’s an appalling challenge.

“He didn’t mean it, but then if I’m sat here with a gun in my pocket and shoot one of you and I killed you, I wouldn’t have meant it because I was just standing up. Actually I might have meant it with a couple of you!

“But I’d still be punished for it. I’ve just been in to see [referee] Keith [Stroud] and I’m the last person to want people to get yellow cards and red cards, but I thought it was bad and I’ve just seen it again.

“I went down to speak to Sky and I hadn’t seen it and I wished I had because they asked me. I didn’t fluff around, I thought it was a bad challenge. It’s a red card, it’s a dreadful challenge and it should have been punished as such.

“What do you lads think? Penalty? Apart from having two of Didzy’s testicles on his boot!

“But let me just clear something up, don’t any one of you think about putting that that has had an effect on the result, the performance or how the game has ended because it hasn’t.

“We played better than them with 11 men, we should have beaten them with 11 men. It’s our naivety that’s cost us at the end.

“But if that’s not at least a booking. He said he hadn’t got a good view of it. Well I had an unbelievable view of it and so had one of his linesmen. I’d love to call them assistants if they assist. And the fourth official was stood next to me, so he had a great view of it.

“I said [to the referee], it was the most appalling challenge, he didn’t mean to kick him there but he did. It’s a non-decision, so I can’t call it an awful decision, can I?”

McGoldrick, who drove himself to hospital having been substituted at half-time, is likely to be out for a number of weeks.

Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal felt his team made too many uncharacteristic errors but thought they would have gone on to win had they not conceded Town’s second goal.

“It was a game where we were penalised because we made some mistakes that we usually don’t do and this was our problem,” he said. “We didn’t give up which was a positive of the game.

“At the end we achieved one goal - it is a correct score. They had opportunities, we had opportunities also but I must tell you we are disappointed because the way we moved the things and played in the second half.

“We can’t [concede] that second goal because if we don’t [concede] that second goal I believe we will win the game. That’s why we are disappointed.”

How that wasn't a red card, I will never know... not even a yellow!? Hope he isn't planning on having any more kids😣

Reminds me of the shocking challenge on David ( Jonty) Johnson by a Lazio player. He had to have surgery and was out for ages!

Carvalhal was watching a different game to me. 8 shots on target to two by them (one of which was a pen, the other in the 94th min) and he reckons he's disappointed they didn't win?!?

ArnieM, actually Jonty made the second leg of that tie against Lazio by coming on as a sub. He was badly kicked in the wedding tackle and required a lot of stitches.

Sounds like the Wednesday manager is practising his statement before the Chairmen.
You were second best fella and got a early Xmas present courtesy of the ITFC players.

He drove himself to hospital! That's up there with Kieron Dyer scoring against Watford with a broken leg!

Hunt should've gone as well in the final minutes for a cynical trip. I don't think it would've been 2-2 if they'd finished with 9 men.

Overall a positive display, gutted to let in 2-2 in injury time. However I think McCarthy should learn that sometimes that attack is the best defense. We need more ability to keep the ball and play it safe. Maybe that will improve with Huws/Bishop back.
By the way..where is Downes? I was thoroughly impressed by him at the start of the season, hope to see more of him.

Gazza1999, thanks for that. It seems light years ago now tbh and I was convinced he was out for a very long time. The Laio players were nothing short of savages tha night at PR, they essentially
" attacked" Johnson while he was on the ground, in front of the North Stand. Unbelievable really. Think the ref was scared of them !

Disgraceful Referee. What was his assistant looking at.! Worst foulseen for a long time and at the end Wednesday should have been down to nine men.
Penalty was very harsh, many refs would not have given that.Very honest assessment from MM.I'm sure he was gutted just like the rest of us.
I thought we played very well and deserved a lot better. There were a lot of positives and things look good, but we must bury teams.
Sears had a poor game and lacks confidence due to being played out of position time after time, but then again he is not going to replace Waghorn or garner,is he.!
Very sorry about D Mc,just hope he recover quickly as he will be sorely missed. On last nights performance I feel very confident for Saturday.

Jabberjackson Senior sewed Jonty's scrotum back up
Those Italians had made a right pigs breakfast of it
It was enough to make an experienced GP wince!

I'm normally supportive of Mick but the loss of 2 points was down to his decisions. Taking Waghorn off when he'd just scored the winning goal, and he won man-of-the-match, and trying to see out a 2-1 was typical of Mick's style. We should have been going for more goals to kill them off, then it doesn't matter if they score in the 94th minute.

An appalling tackle!! Have only just seen it ... and it pisses me off ... for Didzy, for the team, and the fans for having to deal with such a poor set of linesman, most of all a corrupt or inept referee!! Hardly doubt Didzy reads this stuff but my prayers are with you for a strong and speedy recovery!
SOB that tackles like that will have his ....

I thought it was a good performance all round but still disappointed that MM can't get team to keep possession. While Wednesday did show how easy it is to achieve, they lacked the fire power that we had and if that 's the strength of better sides in division then we have little to fear.
I'm constantly disappointed with Sears. He's lost some pace and can't play out wide so MM needs to start thinking about either Folami or Morris on the bench. Also when Celina went off surely Ward was the obvious sub or maybe Rowe but then again he doesn;t even get on bench!
Huws looked great and thought Connolly played very well.

Can you win at Villa Mick? Its about time we start beating someone in the top half of the table or will end up mid table or worse. We've got the players. And I think we have a good chance of doing something on Saturday. Pick your best team and play some football. COYB
