Town Complete Drinan Signing Thursday, 4th Jan 2018 16:49
Town have completed the signing of striker Aaron Drinan from League of Ireland side Waterford. TWTD revealed that the Blues had agreed a deal to sign the 19-year-old in October with the switch rubber-stamped now that the January transfer window has opened and international clearance has come through.
Drinan, who will wear the number 26 shirt and is understood to have cost the Blues €100,000 (£90,000), has signed a contract which runs until the summer of 2021 and could make his debut in Saturday’s FA Cup third round tie against Sheffield United.
“It’s great and I’m buzzing to get going” Drinan told iFollow Ipswich. “Not being able to play was tough but I always knew the transfer would go through so I just kept my head down and worked hard.
“The manager has praised me in training so I hope I can take that out on to the pitch and impress him."
Last week, skipper Luke Chambers revealed the squad had nicknamed Drinan 'Murph' after Daryl Murphy, who Blues boss Mick McCarthy brought into English football from Waterford when Sunderland manager in 2005.
“They’ve started calling me Murph,” Drinan added. “That sort of thing helps and I’ve received a warm welcome from everyone here. I’m so glad to be a part of the set-up now and I’m ready to crack on.”
Speaking last week, McCarthy said he'd been impressed with Drinan and will consider him a first-teamer from the off: “Aaron’s been good, I’m really pleased with him.
“Oh yeah, I will do, certainly. He’s trained and he’s not looked out of place. He’s been really good.
“It's been frustrating for him that he couldn't play, of course. But he’s ready to go now, he’s been training all the time. But he’s not had any games, that’s his only problem, no game time.”
Drinan, who has won caps with the Republic of Ireland’s home-based U19s side, only joined Waterford from Cork City’s youth set-up in August and subsequently made four starts and one sub appearance, scoring once, as the Munster club carried off the League of Ireland First Division title and won promotion to the Premier Division.
Primarily a central striker but also able to operate on either the left or the right, Drinan played youth football with Cobh Ramblers and Carrigaline United prior to his spell with Cork.

One in one out! How about a dynamic midfielder with the ability to read the game because that is what's missing from our team. I suspect they may cost more than a hundred euros!
Pleased for the lad and that he doesn't look out of place in training, alarm bells would be raised if he did, given the standard of the current first team!
Bit concerned about the fact he's "primarily a central striker but also able to operate on either the left or the right" that's Freddie's best position but McCarthy screwed him over by constantly playing him wide. Hope he doesn't do the same with Aaron. Hopefully he will be on the pitch Vs Sheffield (scum of the north) Utd Saturday.
How tall is this guy ? If he is a "Murph" I assume he's a big strong old style number 9. If so him and McG up top in a 4-4-2 would work ....
talking of number 9s ...... and IF we will only ever play with one up top ...... Is it just me - or were we a LOT better when Garner was injured and Waghorn played central ?
With minge and Moore signed cheaply and sold or potentially sold for a considerably larger transfer fee in their limited time at the club, I am interested how much this will be in a couple of seasons? Could he clear the debt when we sell him
Could be the start of a very busy window if we sell Moore, Bart of McGoldrick. Every last penny of the transfer fees and the savings on their wages, needs to be fully reinvested into the playing squad. No spin. The squad needs quality additions
Welcome to Ipswich Aaron, I hope you enjoy your short bedding in spell in the town before MM sends you to Braintree on loan to learn how to defend, cos you won't get into a Mick team until you learn to trackback for 80 minutes of a match.
...... jason0999 - wishful thinking .... you know full well it just won't happen when it come to the spending, cashing in yes, but spending ? not a chance.
After all we have signed Drinan - What more can one expect without selling a few players ?? ....... after all this is IPSWICH TOWN.
