McCarthy Reveals Approach for Goldson With Loans or Bosmans Set to Replace Any Players Sold
Friday, 5th Jan 2018 14:50

Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed he has renewed his interest in Brighton defender Connor Goldson, who came close to joining the Blues on loan in August. McCarthy says that if he were to lose any of his first-teamers, with Bartosz Bialkowski interesting Crystal Palace and David McGoldrick linked with Cardiff and Birmingham, replacements would be most likely be loans or Bosman signings during what he says is “not an easy window”.

McCarthy says he’s spoken to his good friend Chris Hughton about Goldson, who was at Portman Road on deadline day but, as TWTD revealed at the time, his switch blocked at the last as a Seagulls move for another defender fell through and they needed him as cover.

The Town boss says the situation is yet to change: “I’ve actually spoken to Chris about that and that’s still something where unless they’ve got a full squad that they could let him out on loan, it’s still the same position, so we’ll wait and see.”

Hughton told the Brighton Argus that he will be willing to allow the 25-year-old to go out on loan if he brings someone in.

"Probably the only one in our squad that we would still maybe look for something happening would be Connor Goldson, the Albion boss said.

"He played [against Watford], will play on Monday but, when we look at Connor and the games he has played in this last year and a half, if we had an opportunity to get him out on loan and get regular games in the second half of the season then we would.

"This is a young-ish centre-half that in effect really hasn't played for a year and a half. So if we can get him out on loan we certainly will but we would certainly have to bring in somebody as cover."

McCarthy is also looking for additions - “We need some help and hopefully we’ll get some in” - with his injury hit midfield one area which needs strengthening but dismissed links with Newcastle’s Jack Colback, who as previously reported was at Portman Road for the Derby County match as a guest of Martyn Waghorn.

“Somebody obviously saw him, he came to stay with Waggy at the weekend, somebody put two and two together and got 55,” the Town manager added.

“Why wouldn’t I be interested in Jack Colback if he was available but I think there’ll be Premier League teams available and we’d only be a loan, whatever we do will be a loan.

“I think if he gets a chance to move and start his career elsewhere, I think he’d much prefer that.”

McCarthy says that with Kieffer Moore certain to move on and Bialkowski and McGoldrick potentially also departing he has talked to owner Marcus Evans about players coming in.

“We’ve spoken about replacements, of course,” he said. “But you’re talking about Kieffer Moore, Kieffer’s not kicked a ball for us this season so he’s hardly one we need to replace.

“That’s not something that’s a panic job, ‘Kieffer’s gone, we’ll have to go and replace him’. That one can be sidelined straight away.

“Bart and Didzy is another matter. Goodness knows that would be a real blow. None of us are wanting to lose them and I can’t do anything about it. I can’t do anything about being asked about it. If somebody comes in it’ll be discussed and decided.

“As you know, I’m pretty pragmatic about that. We’re always looking just in case for replacements. That could be through injury or suspension, not suspension because we can’t do emergency loans now, but certainly injury, long-term injury or anybody that would leave.

“[We look at] players that we’d be interested in if we had this to cope with, this to contend with.”

Would he want some of that money for fees if they were to be sold, with owner Marcus Evans the man making the final decision.

“I would have to get a player in, however that might be,” he confirmed. “You can keep asking me about the money all you like, but short-term we’ve got four months left of a [season].

“I don’t think it’s an easy window this, so anybody who is for sale is generally more expensive.

“If anybody leaves and if we can get somebody else in to help in terms of loans or it might be a Bosman, there’s still a few of them, we’ll have to try and do that.”

McCarthy says he is no longer on the lookout for a third senior keeper with Dean Gerken's hip problem improving.

“I’m hopeful that Dean is going to be OK," he added. "He’s had these injections and he feels a lot better and fingers crossed he’s all right because we’ve got two exceptionally good goalkeepers.”

The Town boss confirmed he'd now only be looking for another keeper if Bialkowski were to move on: “Of course.”

Not that I'm surprised in the slightest, but it's worth mentioning that MD Ian Milne has once again told us how there would be funds available. We're way past laughable now

Rubbish, if we sell those players and don't replace them with signings then Town can give me next year's season ticket on a Bosman.

Mick is a smart operator in the market and saying Bosmans and loans means if he wanted to buy clubs wouldn't think we are flush.

As expected, another transfer window farce. Evans wont be spending, we will go into the 2nd half of season in a weaker position, . Really need Evans gone .

Good comment Blue Moses. That said season tickets I would imagine will fall in price soon when we pay league one prices. That's the way we are heading.

This could make way for the younger players to be regulars. This is what the club has stated, that predominantly young players are our future. Out with the old and in with the new. Sears, Mcgoldrick, bart, bru and Skuse have had their day. I know some of these are injured, but step up dozzel, McDonnell, nydem and so on. These are now our gems our future and our club. Prove your worth. What was the percentage of young home grown players the club wanted in the first team.
Unfortunately I would let Hyam and bishop go, purely how regularly they get injured.

Oi Mick, why not pick up the leading striker in the Div 1 for NOTHING by just bringing him home.

What a joke this club is. Replacing two our our best players with players who aren't ours... Great idea!

With any luck this means Mick can't have any money to spend as he won't be here next season

I dont believe how naive some are on here. Tractorcam, Milne said funds would be available and they are. Loans and bosmans cost money. At no point did he say funds would be available for transfer fees. People just assumed thats what he meant. And anyway, imo it would be madness to give McCarthy money to sign permanent players when its likely he not gonna be here next season, and the new manager may not want those players.

Why loanees AGAIN? It does not solve the issue that WE, that is IPSWICH TOWN, have a weak team. Why do we insist on developing players for other clubs so they can cash in on them when they get into the PREMIER? That is why our players/team are not as good...we have failed to build. Pathetic.

lightnigblue, the only reason Sears is so poor at the moment is due to the fact of continually being played out of position for so long. I think he deserves a decent run playing through the middle. If he then doesn,t cut the mustard, move him on.

Just for a change I think the owner is right.
Do not let a manager who (hopefully) will not be here next season to spend any of the funds. Get in quality loans (albeit they can also be expensive) short term and allow the new manager some wriggle room in the close season to actually buy players he wants rather than be saddled with McCarthy workman on lucrative long term contracts.
I am a big fan of McGoldrick but he never gives you a full season. Keifer Moore wants away because the manager has told him he doesn't want him and will not play...even in front of Sears. Bialkowski deserves a chance in the Prem, but Gerken imo is not an adequate replacement.
The only thing I really ask is that whoever is going...GO and give us time to get replacements in to see us out until the next season.
We need a GK to replace Bart, A CB to replace Chambers, and box to box midfielder to replace Huws. I wouild also like to see Kenlock and Emmanual given a proper chance but that will never happen (this season anyway)

Does anybody seriously think MM would be bothered leaving ITFC at the end of the season when the little funding he's received over the years is trickling down to nothing? MM will be employed elsewhere in no time while ITFC will be in constant relegation battles without money being invested in buying players.Loans, freebies and youngsters will never get you promoted, not while some Clubs are swimming in money.

Ronnyb I appreciate your view and opinion like everyone else's. I just feel that a lot of attackers or forwards should have the ability to play out wide or just behind the strikers to either score or create goal scoring opertuntes. He is now experienced enough to be adaptable.

The season is over so get some decent deals done during the selling market of January - that is what is happening now and I agree with it. Keep the powder dry until the summer and then spend when we know who is the manager and players are better value.

If we cash in on Bart, McGoldrick and Moore - replacing with loans and frees then I'm afraid that's me done. Clearly a sign of no ambition and Evans stripping assets. There is no point folk saying wait until the Summer, because we know from previous experience it's then one excuse after the other resulting in a net profit in fees for Evans. The Mings situation springs to mind and Murphy last year, when we were told we'd spend in January. Then didn't.

Laughable. Unacceptable.

the only thing that surprises me is that some people are surprised .the only thing this club will try to win is PROMOTION,trouble is it will be from league one, and that may prove to be a long haul too .

Seeing Bart go will be sad however I think it will give fans a clearer picture of the Mcarthy/Evans partnership. Is Mick the man to the most out of a limited funds situation or will Evans give him the funds to have more choice on replacements

Either invest or sell up Evans.

Sign of the playing prospects for the rest of the season 8+ midfielders injured and McCarthy's talking about signing centre back!!! We'd better not sell Bart Christ knows who'd McCarthy would replace him with!!!
