Moore Completes Barnsley Switch
Monday, 8th Jan 2018 19:12

Barnsley have confirmed the signing of Blues striker Kieffer Moore on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Moore, 25, is understood to have cost the Tykes a fee of £750,000 and will be paid nearly £10,000 a week at Oakwell, almost certainly more than three times his wage at Portman Road.

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom told his club's official site: “Kieffer is an excellent addition to the side and we’re really pleased to bring him here. It’s a deal that the club has worked hard on and got done quickly, so I’m delighted with that.

"He’s a player in top form and will bring something different to improve the side. We were after a player of his qualities, who can offer something different and improve the starting XI.

"His height will trouble defenders and cause problems, but as a player he’s got much more in his locker and will score different types of goals.

"Kieffer has already been in the local area and knows South Yorkshire now, so I expect him to settle quickly and work hard to get into our team.”

The Blues signed Moore for £20,000 from Forest Green Rovers last January and he made 11 sub appearances without scoring.

The 6ft 5in tall Torquay-born frontman joined League One Rotherham in the summer and scored 13 goals while at the New York Stadium before being recalled at the start of the year with a number of mainly third tier sides keen on signing him on a permanent basis, in addition to the Millers and his new club.

That pays off a large chunk of the Garner/Waghorn fees

Selling for 750k is like giving away on a free transfer. Why didn't MM try him again?

He might of only cost 20k so some will argue it's good business. But for a striker that has scored that many goals in League One in a short space of time, it seems almost like loose change! McCarthy says he's not better than our current strikers but I'm really not sure if DmG, Sears or Garner were playing in League One they'd of scored as many by Xmas as KM managed. What I saw on Saturday suggests he could of been a much more potent threat than some of our current strikers. He didn't look great for us when he made a few late sub appearances but it's hard to judge a player from just a few minutes here and there from the bench. The only thing I would say if we had of brought him back he'd of probably been relegated to the same fate again and might not of been able to get into the games much and so his value would of dropped again so from that respect maybe we had to cash in. But I think a better manager would be able to get more out of these players we keep letting go by the wayside. And that's not just a criticism of Mick, you can most certainly say the same about Roy Keane who thought getting the likes of Dwight Yorke and Stern John in would compensate for letting Jordan Rhodes go on the cheap! Sometimes I think these managers haven't got the first idea! How on earth Keane got Sunderland promoted, yet here he looked like he didn't have a clue, is rather hard to understand.

‘His head's not really here' — Kieffer Moore confirms McCarthy's heart not really in it anymore, he's just in it for the money.

If Mick can do a few more great deals like this better confirm the contract extension asap.

DmG's goals to games ratio since joining us (following his loan) is around 3.5 games played for every goal scored. Not really prolific is it! Joe Garner is averaging a fraction better than 1 goal in every 3 games played (so far as a Town player) which is a bit better but it's still not enough to fire us into promotion contention. To be in with a chance of going up or at least reaching the Play Offs you really need somebody that can fire in at least 20 a season. And remember the last time that happened we did actually manage to finish 6th.

We are past the half way point and neither DmG or Garner are on target to reach 20 league goals this season. And to be honest even 20 would prob be short of getting us into the Play Offs, you'd prob need somebody to fire in nearer 30 like when Murphy fired in 27 and then we only got into 6th place by the skin of our teeth because Derby dropped a clanger in their last match of the season.

On his current goal to games ratio for Town since signing DmG averages about 13 goals a season, and that is of course if he can stay fit for a whole season. Does that represent good value for money given his wages?

DmG has only ever scored 20 goals once in a single season and that's when he netted 16 goals while on loan to Coventry (at a lower level) and then 6 for us when he subsequently came to us loan that same season. He's never ever came close to doing the same since. I think because of injuries he'll never quite be the same again. In Jimmy Bullard's book he argues that once a player has had 1 or 2 serious injuries (especially to the knees) they are never quite the same as it's always in the back of the mind and he said the same was certainly true of his career (i.e. he had doubts about his ability to ever reach the same level once he'd bad injuries to his knees).

I dont think any of the Town fans are that happy with this deal, would have made sense to play him for the remainder of the season here. The trouble is KM knew he was being offered 10k a week else where, but at Ips his contract was probably only 3k a week max, may be less. Right or wrong but it would have been hard for him to be motivated I am guessing..

You might say £20k to £750k is good business but what if he turns out to be the next Carroll or Wood? £750k could prove to be a snip. Would any other club sell the next highest scorer in League 1 for less than a Mill? Unlikely.

No but do you honestly believe he'll so a better job than garner up top?

Any striker simply divide their wages by goals scored to get a reasonable assessment of their comparable value for money.

Yeah I nearly posted a commented a few weeks back posh got 8m for assombalonga but thought better not upset the apple cart. I thought 2m for more would've been more than reasonable having said would anyone thought Moore would sell 750k last season. Nope he was garbage and the rest of it. When I see more play I thought he had a bit more about him than wood.

I don't think many would want to swap KM for Garner but who would you rather have as cover based on current form, Sears or KM? We could of given him an improved contract but I do get that he would of had his head turned by a team offering him 3 times more wages.

Why is Sears still here?

liam88 added 10:27 - Jan 9
Drinan obviously offers more to the cause, seen by his team mates labelling him Murph. And KM head was turned and wouldn't and couldn't play on the wing if needed to

The player thatI think will come back to haunt us is Jack Marriott who ,rumour has it, Aston Villa are keen on.

@midas: It's all well & good to point out Murphy's great season with 27 goals, but he stood out on his own as our goal threat back then and few strikers will hit that figure again in any side. In fairness to the current forwards, the preferred front 4 have 30 league goals between them and it's only just passed the half way stage in the season. Waghorn han't really been played as a striker and has 10, so may well hit the magical number of 20. The side is set up differently, we're a counter attacking team and have far more options (even Connolly) now that we has then.
I don't like the negative tactics, the lack of interest in playing football in favour of cynical effectivness, but I wouldn't be critical of our current forwards' goal scoring exploits when we may end up with 4 of them scoring 12 or more, with possibly 2 of them hitting 16 - 20.

Fair enough LB, the goals are being spread around more evenly. The main point I'm making is that KM would of been a more potent threat arguably than Sears as cover at least. But I do get he wanted to move on for higher wages. I was a huge fan of DmG too when he first came her on loan but I do wonder if his best days are behind him sadly. He has looked quality at times this season but his pace is gone and his goal scoring ratio is nothing to write home about in recent seasons.

Good luck to him he wasn't given much of a chance here, but took the one at Rotherham which has made this move happen. I wish him luck at Barnsley just not against us hope he proves all the doubters wrong especially the one who let him go!!

It seems ironic to me that when we signed Moore, the Club made a big issue of signing someone during the transfer window - 'watch this space and all that' - 'signing on the way'. That signing was Moore, who, after a very brief chance was sent out on loan, we thought, to hone his skills, so he could be re-called for us to benefit from his improvement. Alas, no! Fear the money won't be re-invested.

It was £15,000 publicity stunt to get the fans off the backs of MM and ME. He was never given a chance. Well not the chance that Jonathan Douglas was given week after week.....
