McCarthy Confirms Goteni Signing
Saturday, 13th Jan 2018 17:56

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that French defender Chris Goteni is joining the Blues from Saint-Apollinaire, as TWTD revealed earlier this afternoon. The deal is done aside from the paperwork.

“He’s joining us, just to the end of the season with an option,” McCarthy said. “We thought it was worth having a look. He came and trained with us and he trained with the first team and did all right.

“He played in a practice match the other day and was awful but I’d seen enough in the training. I don’t think he’d been training properly and he’d travelled, so he’s joining us.”

The 19-year-old joined Saint-Apollinaire from ASPTT Dijon in the summer, having previously been with Ligue 1 side Dijon FCO's youth set-up.

Saint-Apollinaire play at the fifth tier in France but McCarthy says players have previously been recruited from similar levels and gone on to great success.

“I think your man that went to Bristol City [Jonathan Kodjia] was playing fairly low level and they sold him for £14 million!”

Whether he was or wasn't awful, it's an extraordinary thing for a manager to say when confirming the signing.
Best of luck to the lad.

Mick McCarthy is driving the club into a brick wall to maximize the damage he's done. Wilfully damaging the club because the fans were right and he was a disaster.

Wow... a lot of negativity already... anyone remember Mings? Signed from Chippenham town? Give the lad a chance. If he's rubbish there's not much to lose.

No different to Mings or Moore deal. Very very little to lose and he's seen something in him. Of course they wont all pay off e.g. Bajner but how people are wanting to use this as a stick to beat Mick with given his track record signing obscure players is beyond me.

WTF ??? 5th tier of French football. That REALLY the level we're shopping in nowadays. What has happened to my football club. I'm astonished.

Typical whinging bunch of moaner, we sign a young player from abroad and all there is on here is negativity, where as if we had signed a 30 year old player from the championship everyone would be moaning that we never shop abroad anymore and he is too old, ffs cheer up!

What a load of crap. he joined from Angers who had just been promoted to the French top division when he left!

So about the same level as Man on the Moon?

Youngster from 5th division in France? Played a practice match and was awful! What a joke of a club we are becoming. Now i can see how a measly £2m from a new sponsor will help with signings, wages, contract extensions and youth development. Lost for words

Mick confirmed on the radio he won't be in the first team squad. A bit of a non signing really. Just a contract to see how he does.

No doubt we'll have to 'count' this as one of our January transfer deals...Mick buying someone for nothing and hoping to sell him on in another years time for a big profit (hope he's still not here) so another stripe can be presented on McCarthy's arm from Evans.

Keanokeano. I think you'll find the point is not so much that weve signed a player from a low level but that the idiot manager we have says that he was awful in a trial match but still signed him. He may turn out to be a good player but lets be honest the chances id say are slim. Cant imagine any other manager signing a player who didnt impress in a trial match. That after all is what trial games are for.

Robson said that when he saw Hunter playing for Blackburn, he was terrible but signed him anyway. I understand he turned out OK.

Come on, it's a punt. Probably won't work out, but might just. The ”he was awful” comment is just MM's tongue-in-cheek. I'd rather we at least were looking for this kind of potential bargain than yet another half-crocked journeyman. Bienvenu, Chris!

A I think that to many of ,so called, supporters learn their footfall from the Dandy or the Beono.
They certainly don't live in the real world!
Mick has done million each year and costs him about 6million a year just to keep the Club going.
Nobody is likely to come in and buy it off him
Stop moaning and enjoy the football - I have since 1947

how much has this lad cost then and how much can we sell him for in 6 months?

We have a defensive crisis and what people want to hear is that we have signed a decent, experienced defender. This kind of news just winds people up because if Mick was an advocate of Moneyball and was continually making clever deals that gave us entertaining, winning teams then we would all be very impressed BUT all he's doing is treading water and we all have to be content with it. That's why patience is running thin or out.

I think a number of people on here don't quite get Mick's sense of humour.
