McCarthy: Phone Calls and Frustration
Thursday, 18th Jan 2018 19:00

Phone calls and frustration feature heavily in boss Mick McCarthy’s days during the January transfer window as he seeks to add to his squad.

The Blues manager is currently searching the loan market for central midfielders, while another centre-half is a priority with Tommy Smith set to join the Colorado Rapids.

McCarthy, who is hopeful of adding someone to his squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Bolton, outlined how he has been spending his time recently.

“My mate came to see me from Barnsley and we just got back to the house about a quarter to seven after I’d left the training ground and I put the phone down,” the Town boss recalled. “And he said, ‘Don’t you ever get sick of that bloody thing?’

“And I said, ‘No, it’s my job’. But I’d pretty much been on it all afternoon, getting nowhere, achieving nothing, but nevertheless still making calls or accepting calls.

“That’s just about what it is and we’re not doing tons of business, but we’re still trying to get players in.

“It’s frustrating as much as anything and I think it is for everybody else because there are lots of clubs who want to loan players out but need to get somebody else in first.

“Certainly Premier League clubs who think their players should be getting experience playing, and us, of course.

“So, to let them out they have to get somebody else in and that’s just a waiting game. And then you think you’ve got it nailed and something falls through and it’s as far away as it ever was.

“And you’ve probably got something else spinning and you’re thinking, ‘Maybe I ought to do that’. It’s frustration as much as anything.”

He says it's agents and managers he spends most time talking to: “You’ve got to speak to the agents in the end because that’s the game now, you’ve got to deal with the agent, the player’s agent, it’s his representative. Let’s take the agent word out because it always seems like a derogatory term when people say ‘agent’.

“One of them said to me the other day, ‘I suppose you don’t like agents’ when we were talking about big fees. I said there’s nothing wrong with them, I think everybody’s entitled to earn a living but it just depends on what level.

“I’ve no problem with their representatives, I speak to them because I have to ring others up to find out whether we can do a deal with them. And I speak to the managers. I speak to anybody I need to speak to to get a deal done.”

Manager says January transfer window is frustrating - a fairly well known fact in Football - and the first comment is about him talking b*llsh*t. The absolute state of our fans

Rather pious of you bluesfan whatever!!!! Just my opinion, which unless I'm mistaken, is what this website is all about. I'm personally sick of hearing rubbish spouted by McCarthy week in week out. You obviously don't mind it.

4 points off the play-offs and what does MM and ME do in the Jan transfer window?

Nothing as usual. Boycott PR for the rest of the season.

It's just the same BS rolled out each January. Take an early retirement Mick and save yourself from this annual farce. Marcus please sell the club to someone with ambition to make this club great again. Roll on the summer.

LOVE how Mick gets the abuse Evans perhaps deserves on here. You cannot make it up.

He's trying his hardest, has us 4 points off the play offs on a tiny budget and is only able to make loans.

Yet, he receives an absolute pelting off people.

You can't make it up - I would say it's best for a lot of people on here to give up on Ipswich and support Real Madrid.

You'll enjoy that a lot more.

It's the negative football, I think we have a good young squad. But the tactics are dull, players always played out of position, Always 2 defensive midfielders at home. Next 4 games, Bolton, Wolves, Burton Sunderland. He kills players confidence. That's mick not Evans. Evans is to blame for not putting money in yes, but he is a business man, who can offset tax from a profit making company, against a company which is 90 mill in debt. He's smart, we're stupid for turning up every week.

Hope it doesn't take us as long as it has taken Wolves to recover

I accept the arguments that Mick's football is dull. And, yes, it's time for a new manager.
But criticising him for failing to get players in on Evans' meagre budget is ridiculously harsh.
He's made some decent signings (and some poor ones) and generally improved the club.
I fear for our new manager this summer. Unless Evans loosens the purse strings or he's some kind of genius, he'll get the same treatment from some quarters within 6-12 months.
Modern football...great innit?
You've got Arsenal fans moaning because they can't keep a player who wants £500,000 a week.
Thank heavens our club didn't listen to certain fans when Bobby Robson got stick in the early years.

Why get rid of Tommy Smith then, unless we're getting a decent fee?

Good business so far. Would love some more ins and outs. Being a Town fan I allow myself to regularly be refilled with enthusiasm and optimism. Please get a win on Saturday boys!

Unfortunately, everything at this club is reactive.
He should not be phoning about trying to bolster the numbers on January 19th.
It has been obvious since probably November that we have injuries in Midfield, and a Lack of CBs with Webster out.
The scouts should have been out and about trying to find talent and reporting back and deals getting done, even if it is loans.
Unfortunately the criteria for most signing seem to be.

Will not be competition for any of the 'top bloke' regulars.

As I have stated before, the owner will not give him any money as the new man in June will need that to get players he wants, hence short term loans and out of contract short term deals.

To me as a ST holder that makes sense
