Town Sign Tottenham Defender on Loan
Friday, 19th Jan 2018 11:05

Town have signed Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old USA international came through the youth system at White Hart Lane, where he worked with the Blues' head of player and coaching development Bryan Klug during his spell as assistant academy director at Spurs.

Southend-born Carter-Vickers joined the Tottenham academy aged seven and progressed through the ranks and has made four starts for his parent club, two in the FA Cup, two in the Carabao Cup.

The 6ft 1in tall central defender joined Sheffield United on loan in August and made 18 starts for the Blades, scoring his only senior goal so far on his debut in a 1-0 win at Bolton, where the Blues are in action tomorrow coincidentally.

His final game for the South Yorkshiremen was their 1-0 FA Cup victory over Town earlier in the month.

Carter-Vickers says it's been quite a week for him with his spell at Bramall Lane coming to a surprise end and then his move to the Blues.

“I didn’t expect to be called back," he told iFollow Ipswich. "I thought I would be at Sheffield for the season but then I got told Ipswich wanted me.

“It’s all happened very quickly but I know Ipswich are a big club and it’s an exciting opportunity for me.

“I looked at the Championship table and Ipswich are only four points off the play-offs so hopefully I can help the team push on and compete for the top six places.

“I’ve really enjoyed Championship football. It’s a demanding league and there are a lot of big clubs in the division. Ipswich are one of them and I’m thankful for the chance to come and play here.”

The defender, who will wear the Town number 27 shirt, qualifies for the USA through his father, Howard Carter, who was a notable basketball player for the Denver Nuggets and Louisiana State University in the 1980s, and has won one senior cap in addition to appearances at U18, U20 and U23 levels.

Carter-Vickers will go straight into the squad for Saturday's game at Bolton with his recruitment allowing Tommy Smith to complete his switch to the Colorado Rapids.

Town are also expected to announce the signing of Stephen Gleeson from Birmingham this morning with that move now understood to be a short-term deal to the end of the season with the 29-year-old midfielder set to have his contract at St Andrew's, which was due to be up at the end of the season, terminated.

A good signing & a bit of a coup really.
The fact that he signed a year long loan with Sheffield United and that expected to be staying might hint at someone more than just a loan deal to the end of the season? Why would be recalled from a loan where he is getting regular football, to go to another club of a similar stature also on loan?
I remember Ryan Tunnicliffe having his loan spell with us cut short, but that was because he was being sold to another Championship club. we would be rightly disgusted if Celina was recalled by City only to be loaned out to Leeds, Derby or possibly Sheffield United for the remainder of the season
Hoping that this deal is a loan, with an option to buy during the summer.

Welcome young man, a great loan player to get especially as he is young and fit. Shame to see Tommy leave the club, but I suspect that his back injury is probably more series then most people think. It's likely that this is the best option for both player and club, thanks for all the goals you scored and I wish you well for the future.

@Lee Brennan. It appears he was sent back by Sheffield as they have bought a defender from Southend. So no conspiracy here, also by the comments from Sheffield Manager he form was a bit inconsistent.

Though not knocking it, he will be a good addition hopefully.

Tommy is an average champ defender although his partnership with chambo wen mm first arrived was good.unfortunately he is very slow and a bit of a liability wen a long ball is knocked over his head

Strange that spurs seemed happier to send him to us. Not that I don't think we are at least as attractive an option as Sheff U. The fact he is 20 and not really pushing for a spurs place at all means he might well be available end of season to us if he does well. The comments about Klug becoming manager..... I have nothing but respect for him but his skills are in bringing through young players to the first team. His management skills are unknown and if he was manager wouldn't the academy suffer? MM has shown willing to play the kids. There are a lot he has used.

He's only 20, he'll be much closer to family here, maybe that's what swayed his decision. There are plenty of spare seats at PR for his family to come watch him.

Klug is one cog in the engine MM would have been behind this signing.

Having seen a video of his part in the Spurs v Chelsea cup match, he looks pretty decent - very good positionally, good reader of the game, decent tackles, distribution fair but could improve - all in all a very good signing for us. Let's hope he helps to plug our leaky defence!

If you took out the words 'definitely' and 'obviously' out of the English language I don't think most footballers would be able to cope.

Thank goodness for Klug.
If MMhad his way he'd be signing one of his old Irish fav's so pleased Klug got in there first.
Some rave about MM signings but in reality he relies on his mates to find them but left to his own he comes up with Best and Coke!
Love to see Lug and Nash take over when he's gone.

Welcome Cameron. Still learning but it sounds most promising with ,perhaps, consideration for the future.

Tottenham, international caps, the Klug link and played for Sheff U while they were doing well. A very promising pedigree.

apparently he is a ball playing c half and is very quick according to my spurs fan, he was up against cavani at psg in pre season tournament and was not beaten once in a foot race so that will do for me :) ...was also told that the spurs boy norwich got on loan marcus edwards is meant to be a quality english talent but has a questionable attitude so that should make nxt months derby interesting, shame we didnt get him too

Personally not keen on lots of loanees as normally back to square one in the summer. But this is a good signing in terms of the quality of the player. Shame a permanent player will go to be replaced by someone else's player.

..... Pilgrimblue - great suggestion - would stand a good chance of success with such an appointment.

Just what the Club needs - in May - or earlier ... !!
