McCarthy Now Favourite for Barnsley Manager's Job
Thursday, 8th Feb 2018 11:13

Blues boss Mick McCarthy is now some bookmakers' odds-on favourite for the vacant job at Barnsley, his hometown club where he started his playing career.

Having been very much an outsider in the early betting following Paul Heckingbottom’s departure for Leeds on Tuesday, McCarthy’s odds came in significantly this morning and, at the time of writing, stand at 8/11 with SkyBet and Bet Victor.

With Sky Bet Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley is second favourite at 6/4, current Tykes caretaker-manager Paul Harsley is third at 10/1 with former Leeds, Huddersfield, Preston and Sunderland manager Simon Grayson fourth at 14/1.

McCarthy, who celebrated his 59th birthday yesterday, was born in Barnsley and came through the ranks at Oakwell.

He made his senior debut in 1977 and went on to make 314 appearances, scoring 10 goals, before leaving for Manchester City in 1983, having been part of a side which had climbed from the Fourth to the Second Division.

It’s not the first time McCarthy has been the bookies' favourite for another job during his five-and-a-half-year spell with Town, the Blues boss, who is widely expected to move on when his contract is up in the summer, having been linked with a return to the Republic of Ireland role which he previously occupied between 1996 and 2002 on a couple of occasions.

We never get THAT lucky ... if he does go, we'll probably get some other knob-end like Mark Hughes .

An unlikely outcome unless home is where the heart is. But, is Barnsley really home now after so long ? His family live in Bromley I think. Anyway, if he goes I would not be unhappy but he would certainly go with my best wishes. What worries me most is on what basis does Evans makes his decision re an incoming manager. I just hope that when that situation arises he gets sound advice.

Your reminder that Mick McCarthy refused to shake hands with Margaret Thatcher so he deserves some respect from all on here

I will always be a realist! I,m no fan of of MM or TC for that matter, so i like to look at the bigger picture! when he came all those years ago we were about to be relegated...Fact!
Since then he has had sod all money to play with, a pittance to buy quality players, something which is a must in the toughest second tier in the world!
His hands have been tied completely! we would all love a 72 inch widescreen but without the funds we can only look!
On what money he has had, not alot! we have managed a play off place and one very close too!
On the negative, we have suffered some of the most dire football ever witnessed at Portman rd! is it possible due top the above? no money?
What i do not like in this man is his attitude and almost contempt, the way he has treated the loyal fans of this once proud club. behind that jovial face is a mean unkind nasty piece of work, i honestly believe that, he has nil respect for the club, the badge nor the fans with his comments, i could never have worked for him, i would have sussed him out rather quickly!
So wether he goes or stays is immaterial for now? we have more problems to solve, more immediate worries, we have a squad that has lost heart, watching some i would say have fallen out of love with the beautiful game, and are just there going through the motions and a decent pay cheque, Didsy a perfect example! totally disinterested! his body language says it all|!
The club has a huge debt and climbing, attendances are falling by the week, season ticket holders handing them back, way too many empty blue seats and so on!
Oh and lets not forget our wonderful Mr Milne, on a huge salary no doubt, just what does this idiot do apart from looking like he gets his suits from Oxfam and talks dribble!
Bring on next season with a new heart and soul in the club, starting from the very top downwards!!
There said my bit!

Looking at the Barnsley forums (aka doing a Harry from Bath!) they are ecstatic at the thought of Mick taking over.. Ole Big head would love to hear his name ringing out instead of total apathy at Portman Road, I have a feeling this might happen.

I don't deny that Mick has made some shrewd signings and we have a decent squad for the money he's been allowed to spend. The problem is he doesn't let them play the football that they all want to play and that the fans all want to watch. He worries too much about other teams and how good they all are.
WHY won't he let our team play and attack? Why do all our promising youngsters go out on load instead of blooding them here?
MM is good at what he does but he's way too negative and always far too scared of the opposition.
We need a forward thinking, attack minded manager who will let players play in their best positions and with freedom to express themselves.

Its time to go the atmosphere with the fans has now become toxic no manager has distanced himself from the fans like he has. Thanks for saving us from relegation but we really are going nowhere. Also blame the owner for his lack of ambition, we must find a young hungry manager with new ideas and a better relationship with the fans.

Myself I would like to see the owner change before Mick goes. Without a substantial increase in money available to the club I cant see any other manager doing a better job with the resources available. We don't have the funds to be a 'free flowing' football club.

Have just been looking at the championship manager list and dates in, McCarthy joined us in 2012, the longest serving after that is 2015!. There is something to be said for stability but this unfortunately can lead to stagnating, which is currently happening at ITFC. Mick has done a good job with what he has but it is time for a fresh approach, even if it doesn't come off. At present we will be stable but will do nothing, which in football is pretty pointless!!!!

Hmmmm It seems to me that a surprising amount of you luvable muppets *still* dwell predominantly on FORMER MERITS even in is this very respect here, i.e. as the primary & very rosy measuring stick in your evaluation of MM...in contrast to mayhap stating that The Dino *once did* (implying a past tense of is currently doing; or has continuously done all along!) well here. LOL

It's no secret that The Dino is very cozy with Madame Fortuna (especially in extreme beleaguered times at ITFC when he from his own job security pov has needed her the most!) and as such should be very grateful to HER for a pretty sizable amount of them points we indisputably "NICK" *every* season under his tenure, including this one However my main point in this latest 2 part "novella" of mine is this:

## The truth of the matter is , that despite annually spending minuscule amounts on strengthening the squad (considering our £ 700 mill net worth owner) in my own and many OTHERS opinion we could & should have accumulated an even bigger points-haul ... and potential success (cup wise too!), come season's end in MOST of The Dino's years here since the first, if he hadn't unwaveringly stuck to his overall UNDARING &NEGATIVE idea of training, managing and not the least playing football in the 21th century!!!##

Including:

1) fundamentally being ecstatically Gung Ho 95% of the time with ANY single point away from home no matter the current dysfunction, possible cripplenees or mere league position of the opposition!

2) relentlessly advocating the dreaded & fan-deterrent: "We-adjust-to-THEM-while-keeping-the-HEDGEHOG-approach-and-basically-just-try-to-NICK-all-3" in the overwhelming majority of *all* league games!

3) and of course the two above then Dino-trademark-like 'spiced up' with utterly indefensible favorism among certain characters of his assembly of "Proper Blokes" (i.e. them unconditional UnDroppables) in additional to either mind-boggling late, wimpy or otherwise completely incoherent substitutions in INNUMOUROUS games season after season!

4) Annual impatience (or rather mistrust!) in the more creative among our youth -.... who are then constantly lend out -- or even sold often without haven't EVER been giving a fair chance here -- and I'm certainly not a fan of the "they will get better elsewhere" argument when many of them being lend-out could "get better" right HERE (at the expense of some of them UnDroppables for instance) especially since we for the umpteenth time look to be a mere 'ALSO RAN' in this league neither going up or down!!!

5) And last but not least his ANNUAL hyper appalling indifference to the 2 big domestic cup tournaments where The Dino seems overly joyful to exit at "his earliest convenience" ...against even non-league opposition!

(And ohhhh I haven't even touched upon the sad attendance figures and the fact of how him and his foul-mouthed & fan-hostile 'Delusion of Grandeur' personality all on its merry OWN, meaning in notable instances often regardless of 1-5), has steadilly outright DRIVEN a nowadays significant number of fans from visiting PR altogether or at least as often as they would like to do otherwise!!!)

END EVALUATION:
Aye The Dino did do real "great" by saving us from the looming drop in his first season (but the reality is: So could a considerable number of other PURELY defensive & hedgehog minded venerable mangers have done!) .... Subsequently he has occasionally accumulated a bigger points-haul with near penniless ITFC than expected by SOME (but not me personally! Meaning IF *every* thing related to just football matters here at ITFC were done OPTIMALLY instead of the archaic, rigid and thus often 1-dimensional "Dino Way"!) whether that's surprising points- haul largely was hanks to the aforementioned Madame Fortuna or for instance Murph having himself a surreal phantom season, or like in THIS season predominantly pure "opportunism" in front of goal all-around (as we have fairly often been very heavily outshot this campaign TOO!) ... and obviously no can deny him his credit (or partly our unheralded scouts credit!) for the ability to unearth the occasional gem in his smallish transactions on an extremely meager or limited "allowance".

So obviously it's not all been doom & gloom with Mick. Fairly far from it in fact. There are several very notable "pluses" to look back on .... BUT when holding these up against ALL the "minuses" I cared to mention above (i.e. sure others could find a few additional ones!) then sorry folks!, imho it is nothing short of a 'Misrepresentation of The Truth' to claim that overall he has done MIRACULOUS WONDERS here, when looking at the proverbial 'Whole Picture' ..... though non-rosytinted & critical glasses (nooo not "critical" just for the sake of being critical, but rather strictly for that a more complete nuanced & objective evaluation!) mind you, during his long-drawned tenure.
