Skuse Signs New Deal
Thursday, 8th Feb 2018 16:38

Midfielder Cole Skuse has signed a new contract which will keep him at Portman Road until the end of June 2020 with the club having an option for a further season.

The 31-year-old’s current terms were up in the summer, although with a similar option also having been included in that deal.

"“I’m delighted to have got it done,” Skuse told iFollow Ipswich. “I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been thinking about it because I’ve got a family to look after. I’ve got kids at school and things like that. "

“I’m not one to be badgering the hierarchy at the club and the manager though. I have just got my head down and concentrated on my football and it’s that that reflects on a deal being done really.”

""Looking further ahead, the Bristolian says he plans to get involved in youth coaching at Playford Road.

“Things can change in football but if I could finish my career here and then go down a different path of working at the club, maybe as a coach that would be great,” he added.""

“I have spoken to Bryan Klug and he said they’d love for me to do some work with the academy. So if that is a route I go down, I’d love to do that here.”

Skuse has made 194 starts and one sub appearances for the Blues, scoring two goals, having signed on a free transfer from hometown club Bristol City in the summer of 2013.

Very average mid table holding midfielder, doesn't control any games ever , doesn't protect the back four enough to allow wing backs to push on and adds literally nothing going forward. If he is so good at what he does why do we have to have another defensive midfielder alongside him for the majority of the time he has been here ?

Skuse is an excellent reader of the game although his lack of pace has been made obvious by slow defenders behind him. Also, the lack of available quality around him in midfield has made him look poor at times. Connolly has made a difference and has forged a decent partnership with Skuse. When those two have played together, we've looked quite solid at times. Tbh I thought he'd have gone with Mick along with maybe Didzy and possibly Chambers. That's a good contract at his age so I can't blame for signing.

Jeeesssuuusss!! Says it all for me about where this club has been going for the past 6 years. No flair, no attack, no chance. Proper bloke. The reason why skuse, chambers etc are proper blokes/professionals is because they don't want to rock the boat as they can't believe their luck....

Good news all round, great at breaking play up yes he is not the greatest ball player on the park but that's not his job, if he's allowed to do his job which he was when we were playing our 6-4 formation than when he gets the credit that is deserved.go and let foghorn waghorn, garner and didz and the rest to go attack. Working towards coaching be brilliant and if downes gets a season alongside him be even better

In my Opinion I do not believe this is a good deal.
He is 31, not getting any better plus we had the option of an additional year anyway.
All this will have done is tied the hands of the new man (hopefully) when he looks to bring his own players as I assume (and in all honesty it is an assumption) the Skuse will be one of our higher earners too.
We should have exercised our extra year option and then seen if the new man rated him as much as Mick does. It just makes financial sense !!!

Been almost a year since we won a game without Skuse in the team.

4 games he missed this season and 3 of them were against Wolves x2 and Derby...so your saying if we had him playing we would have won those?...I think not.

My preference would have been to sign Conolly on a permanent deal.

A little suprised by some of the opinions on here regarding skuse. However everyone is entitled to their view. I personally believe he is a very good defensive player and that we do need ONE in the side. I would have him in the team every week but wouldn't have any other defensive players alongside him. He is in my opinion the best we have for that role. I am not a MM fan and would love to see us playing attacking football every week, but we would still need a skuse or we would be turned over every week.

Disappointing. Too defensive. Strange move if McCarthy is not staying.

Ok, hopefully the new manager won't play another defensive midfielder along side him. A premiership quality midfielder should be able to keep it tight, on his own.

Gcon....that's because he always plays irrespective of form/ability. It's like saying it's only been 6 games since we last lost when he played. It's a nonsense statement.

I read the criticisms of Skusex but do not see it. A really sound DM week in week out.

Surprising that the club have moved to secure him yet talent like McGoldrick is going to let walk away and last year it went to the wire with Chambers.

Skuse does a decent job but he isnt unique, we now have Gleeson, Hyam who can both do a similar job,, what we should be trying to do is sign Connolly.

And why if the Manager is moving is Evans making decisions on who we keep? Surely let a new manager decide?

It seems an odd model that Evans re-signs them and according to McCarthy its nothing to do with him. BS.

Must admit, I've been unfairly critical of Skuse in the past. He is a limited footballer and offers little going forward, but what he does he does well. He's a 7/10 performer week-in, week-out in the water-carrier role, which is what managers like, and also seems like a good character.

My main criticism was with the Douglas partnership. Having two slow, defensive players in the middle killed the game. Put a more attacking player alongside and let Skuse do the unglamorous stuff.

Skuse could do with a good ball winning 6 foot plus hard working Patrick Vierra type midfielder to give him a hand

Great news!!! And like I have said before people who think skuse is a terrible player have obviously never played football themselves before and actually don't have much knowledge about the game lol

Obviously a decent bloke [not ironic!], well respected at the club, and with a connection now to the region via his family. This puts him in a good light in my book. I hope he does move into coaching at ITFC as I think he is the kind of person to do a professional behind-the-scenes job without a lot of fuss or controversy. I'm not quite sure about him playing for another 2-3 years, though. At 31, he's going to find it more and more difficult, presumably. On the other hand, new Matt Hollands don't grow on trees or come cheap.

Well if all his proper blokes are on new contracts then at least we will get a fee for them if Mick takes them with him(please)

Please do not extend McGoldricks contract, if this happens we know that McCarthy is going to be given more time boring us with his negative tactics......be brave and look for a new manager with different ideas.

So that looks like the confirmation Dino is staying ????
Unless of coarse he was just making sure his mate was ok for the next 2yrs.
Dino just loves winding up the fans with his might go might not go !!!!!
