Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom Linked With Blues Boss
Monday, 26th Feb 2018 16:49

Reading are reportedly eyeing Blues boss Mick McCarthy as a potential successor to Jaap Stam should the Dutchman lose his job at the Madejski Stadium, while Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom are also claimed to be potential suitors for the Town manager, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

According to a rather speculative piece in the Daily Mail, the Royals, currently 18th in the Championship, are long-time admirers of McCarthy along with a number of other clubs and the 59-year-old would be in their thoughts if they were to sack Stam.

In addition to Reading, the Owls are said to be monitoring developments, while West Brom could also view him as a potential successor to Alan Pardew if they are relegated, despite Blues’ boss’s history with their rivals Wolves.

Although McCarthy's terms with the Blues are up in the summer, owner Evans has an option to keep him for two more years.

Speaking on Friday, McCarthy said he believes it’s more likely that Evans will ask him to stay on at Portman Road than let him depart after five and a half years in charge, despite the majority of fans calling for a change.

He added that he expected to talk to Evans about his future "over the next three or four weeks".

Put it this way... I'd rather have him in our dug out than the oppositions!

Someone take him off our hands please..for the good of this club we cannot go through another season with him in charge..if he stays all the in-fighting will just drag on and on and on..it's not healthy..I do not want McCarthy's brand of football any longer at our club.

We need someone preferably with a town connection, someone with a bit of vision, someone who wants to play attractive football & most of all someone who actually wants to be here..i've never felt any of those with McCarthy.

West Brom I'd instantly dismiss - why would they get McCarthy in when they shunted out Pullis a similar type manager but with a better track record in the Premiership.

Not a big MM fan right now. Starting to find the anti a bit boring though. Let what will be will be. Football has a way of slapping you in the face whether happens

Having thought about this a lot over the last few months, and looking at the comments on here,I have to say I'm turning back towards McCarthy, everyone else on the outside seems to think with the resources he has he is doing a good job,and to be honest I intend to agree at the moment,I'm looking at the table and I'd rather be where we are than Sunderland Birmingham are etc

The thing that turned me was the town fans (so called !!) who come on here and give him stick who go to the games and vent their displeasure at him,and when he gave it back to you at the Norwich game came on here and grizzled about it...i for the first time saw a bit of psssion in MM and thought you know what fair play to him.....here come the mark downs !!! You know what I don't care, who do town fans honestly think on our budget we are going to get to come in and who with the resources we have is going to do much better
Get real we are a great club and I love town to the core, but we cannot compete any more with the financials of other clubs,so we need to stop moaning and support the team and the club,we will still be here long after MM and ME have gone, still supporting OUR club through thick and thin

Re the no funds issue, I agree to an extent Mick has done reasonably well in signings but why sign them if you do not play to their strengths or just blatantly ignore them?? I still reckon that with a positive attacking set up we would be in the top 6 the players are in the building big man but you will not change that is why a change is needed!! perhaps you are feeling a bit insecure as May approaches hence a journo pal has put this out to force the contract onto the table.

MM's done exceptionally well with the meagre resources he's had, signed some pretty good players "on the cheap"........but.......[there's always a but] for heaven's sake man, play those players in their favourite positions, include a couple of fringe players rather than the 'old school dependables'.
The more money you give him the better quality defensive minded player he'll get, you won't change his style of football "and for that reason I'm out!"
Time for a change & please don't give me that old pony 'be careful what you wish for' I'm way way past that!

Now if we got a chap called Mark Hughes in and gave him some actual money it would not only give us a decent chance next season but put a few bums on seats.

Any views guys?

Glad you have no say in hiring our managers. He'd be worse than McCarthy. Utterly terrible manager!

I read something the other day. It's from before my time so others can verify, but it was this:

Bobby Robson's first four seasons at Ipswich, Town finished 12th, 18th, 19th & 13th. It was only in the fifth year that youth really started coming through, becoming regular first team players. With that crowds started rising again and momentum built from there.Funding was in short supply and interestingly he only signed 14 players in 13 years.

Our current manager is not funded by our anonymous owner and there is a really healthy bunch of young players gradually developing. There are definite parellels here that I feel are worthy of consideration.

Cue the furious lunges at the minus key, by those incensed at the thought that funding or ownership or long term strategy has anything to do with things!....

Well the posts reflect the poll - I guess about 3 to 1 want MM to leave.
Mick is proving yet again to be a divisive manager - I can recall his falling out with Roy, the Dark Lord, in Saipan in 2002 and the Irish public were split down the middle.
We all welcomed the improvement which followed the Laurel and Hardy fiasco of BFJ and the Dark Lord. However.....I think the negatives are beginning to outweigh the positives. The negatives - defensive, dull football resulting in lower attendances, subdued atmosphere at PR and of course a loss in revenue. There is his falling out with some fans, MM has always being a prickly manager! His tendency to stand by certain players, although there has been less of that this season.
There are some positives - he is canny at getting in good players and he would appear to have the team behind him - as one of the above comments noted the team rarely gives up these days.
However, if you are ambitious for the club I think it is time we got a new manager with a more positive approach who can bring back the fans. He will need however a budget to bring in some players.

Gcon - the Robson era began in the top division and the club had a lot of unity through the Cobbolds and with supporters, yes Robson struggled in his first 2 seasons but there after a clear progression. Robson and McCarthy have no comparison and football has changed so much since those times you just can't compare, so your saying these youngsters under MM will make an improvement next season?, I'm for one not against it but you do need a mix and as romantic as it sounds that our youth players are going to come through and 'salvage' the club to a degree but have to be a bit more realistic and certainly with McCarthy's style of management. Downes/Dozzell/Nydam all have potential though.

TimmyH. In terms of the long term future of this club - It is the complete lack of unity between owner and supporters that is the bigger problem, to my mind. Managers aside, attendances have fallen at a fairly consistent rate, year on year, since ME took over.

Please don't try to rewrite history. The Saipan situation was initiated and forced by RK. MM displayed exemplary management judgement to protect the mood within the rest of the squad. MM was not the devisive element there. Decisive yes; devisive no, except with the RK supporters.

Furthermore, to suggest that BFJ's tenure was akin to something of Laurel & Hardy is nothing short of scandalous. JR brought relatively good times to PR despite having to operate on a budget similar to what MM has to adhere to now.

This speculation just days after Ipswich became Micks longest stint in management,oh and reaching a hundred wins for Town.

Like some,I have no time for the Daily Mail, which has a large circulation nevertheless;must be read by many Town fans though.

I pray that unlike the Barnsley rumour, this has some substance.

I would also hope that this gives both parties( Manager & Owner) a way to come out of this' smelling of roses'.Mick wont have got the push,as he has from past clubs;and Marcus wont have to pay out any money, which by his recent actions, seems loathe to do.

Like most of the ITFC fans, feel it would be better if he went asap;before the season ticket sales. That way Mr Evans could well see his income increase, instead of going down,as it has over recent years.

Cheerio, Cheerio,Cheerio !!!

One of the problems with Dino is his pick of Subs is Woeful ?? at Norwich for example (
Iknow that game is done and dusted)) an uninterested McGoldrick and 2 defensive players Hyam and Spence, when he had the chance to put on carayol and Celina, he might have got the win and gained a few Brownie points instead of at the time the 0-0 draw he was guarding ???
But there are other games his choice of subs have been poor.

Read the item, it says if West Brom get relegated.
With parachute money available McCarthy would then be a good option.

Evans. Do not allow this to happen. Get Mick signed up, the fans will come back when we have our turn of success. They will forget, just like they did when Ribson called them zombies.

Gcon.I had been supporting Town for several years before Bobby Robson, and you are quite correct that they struggled initially with this rookie manager.By the way they finished 11th in the 4th year, and I had seen an improvement after 2 years, not 4.

Don't forget these finishes were in the then 1st Division against the top teams like Man City,Man Utd,Arsenal ,Chelsea,Liverpool,Forest and Derby, not in the 2nd tier as now.MickMcCarthy has a far worst record in this Division than Sir Bobby.

You are also completely wrong about the introduction of youth, which McCarthy has yet to achieve after 5+ years. In 1970 we had the likes of Eddie Spearitt ,Mick Hill,Mick Lambert,Trevor Whymark and Mick Mills, soon to be joined by Geoff Hammond and Colin Harper. All self grown players, although think Mick Mills came from Portsmouth Youth, and Hill from Sheffield Utd for £33000.They were however all young players;but you must appreciate that it is a very long time ago now.

Yes there were stalwarts like Billy Baxter from the League championship era,and Mick McNeil, and in the first 2 years he made the shrewd signings of Jimmy Robertson from Arsenal (50k)and Frank Clarke,'Sniffers elder brother ,who was a big name at Leeds;from QPR(40k).These purchases were more than covered by the sales of Danny Hegan and John O'Rourke for a total of £160k.

I am afraid I do not agree that there is any similarity between the early years of a young manager, and the 6 years of the current very experienced incumbent;especially the football outlook.I can never recall Mr Robson going 1-0 up at half time, and then trying to sit on it for the entire 2nd half as happened last Saturday against Preston, although I know we did win on this occasion.
