Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom Linked With Blues Boss
Monday, 26th Feb 2018 16:49

Reading are reportedly eyeing Blues boss Mick McCarthy as a potential successor to Jaap Stam should the Dutchman lose his job at the Madejski Stadium, while Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom are also claimed to be potential suitors for the Town manager, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

According to a rather speculative piece in the Daily Mail, the Royals, currently 18th in the Championship, are long-time admirers of McCarthy along with a number of other clubs and the 59-year-old would be in their thoughts if they were to sack Stam.

In addition to Reading, the Owls are said to be monitoring developments, while West Brom could also view him as a potential successor to Alan Pardew if they are relegated, despite Blues’ boss’s history with their rivals Wolves.

Although McCarthy's terms with the Blues are up in the summer, owner Evans has an option to keep him for two more years.

Speaking on Friday, McCarthy said he believes it’s more likely that Evans will ask him to stay on at Portman Road than let him depart after five and a half years in charge, despite the majority of fans calling for a change.

He added that he expected to talk to Evans about his future "over the next three or four weeks".

@Gcon

At that point Bobby was only in his late 30s/early 40s and was just starting out in management.

Mick is almost 60 and fair to say very, very much “stuck in his ways”..his teams have been churning out fairly turgid football for 25+ years,I can't see him changing his “style” all of a sudden, particularly to keep us lot happy.

We need a manager with a desire for good football running through his veins.

Your right @whoseroundisitanyway - just about worse, one thing MM trying to keep WBA up in the Premiership but Mick having the ability to get them promoted from this division. He's past it tactically, he hasn't really done anything since getting Wolves promoted in 2009.

Cant really work these rumours out?

Why would attack minded teams want to bring him in? The only difference being that maybe he will have a huge pot of money to spend and build the defensive nature of the team. I dont know even if given the big budget he would use it , he seems to like doing it with "spit and sawdust" the Yorkshire way

Nice piece Seasider, well written.
I would also add that BFJ's reign was not akin to Laurel & Hardy!
How many times did we walk out of PR with a smile & a score of 3-2 or 4-3, now that's what I call entertainment.

Blue041273 - I probably did not myself clear. By BFJ I was referring to Paul Jewell not Joe Royal who was an excellent manager.

In relation to Saipan I actually backed MM but many in Ireland did not. The case however is not as straightforward as you might think. Yes MM was decisive and had to uphold his position as manager, how Keane approached the issue was wrong. However he did have a point as regards the preparations made by the FAI for the world cup and how the players were treated. There have been improvements possibly as a result of Keane's stance but as we saw a couple of years ago not in the case of Ireland's women's team!

Yeah that's true, but he's been here since then with no money.
Think some of the Baggies would see him as a quick fix regardless of his history.

MM to be fair has done well in bringing in some talent on little money. He's made some errors and missed opportunities but generally and on balance I think he done well in respect to player acquisition. However his type of football is a remnant of a bygone age and will take us nowhere.
So how about making everyone happy and pushing him upstairs to continue to seek out cheap but progressive players and bring in a younger manager who will then develop them and who has the modern tactical know-how to make the games exciting again.

Great comment Black Shuck.
Lets not get too excited at the thought of Dino going. I hate being disappointed!

I reckon 9 times out of 10 any half decent manager would do well if backed heavily. That said, if ME did suddenly decide to go wild in the aisles i wouldnt want Dino making the decisions on who we signed. As mentioned previously, his ageing football philosophy and what he perceives to be a model for winning won't change now as he is too stubborn and stuck in his ways to evolve in to what is required these days.

Seasider ....... a great post. Absolutely factual - which knocks many who 'think' they know Ipswich Town into a cocked hat.

What do you think will happen to this club if MM did leave?? Do you think there is a better manager out there that can get this club up on the budget he has?? Look at Birmingham.... Look at the top managers they have had in the last year or 2..... And where are they...... Fighting relegation. You need to spend and buy players to get out of this league. It is one or if not the hardest league in football to get out of. Don't be calling for MM to leave, it's the powers above that need to change to make this club a great club again!

Many years ago I was at an evening game and please forgive if I've got this wrong, but I believe it was against Man U, when the PR faithful were chanting "Robson, Robson you must go"
God help us if the Cobbald's had taken any notice and pushed him out the door.
Now I'm in no way saying that Evens should not take notice of the views of what is now the majority of what town fans want, (my own included).
But to draw any comparisons between these two managers is like comparing chalk to cheese.
When Robson arrived we had a raw novice of a man in charge of a side that had tough individuals in it who thought it was their god given right to be picked and play the game the way they wanted it. But that man had a hunger to succeed
Today we have a man who has a vast experience of management, who rules his players to play in his style which leaves them in no certain terms that if they don't then they don't play at all. "I've doe it before so you'll do it my way again".
If there is no passion coming from the players to play their way, in their positions then the result is what we see week in week out at PR.
Looking at both of my summaries you can see that there is a fine line between being a player and a manager who thinks they play the game the right way.
It just takes a good manager to make those decisions, to instil a belief in his players, to see what a player really has to offer the game and to get them to do it.
For all this to happen a manager needs time to assemble a team, Robson was given it.
McCarthy has been given it.
Perhaps its time for someone else to try.

Dissboy - There is always the odd outsider that defies the odds, but you won't get far backing the outsiders in every race.

I am now heavily influenced by the wisdom of Black_Shuck - Who is either a very wise man or a spambot churning out Confucious via Google translate. If I was wiser I would be able to tell.

And you are not important to me Dino...

...in fact you never ever were!!!

As imo other ultra defensive-minded managers, especially if advocating the more or less identical negative & hedgehog football mind-set as MM did (and often still do to this date btw!), could realistically have saved us in 2012-2013.
Sadly plenty of narrow-minded people refuses to merely entertain that very well-founded "IDEA" / "ALTERNATIVE REALITY"... ...hmmm kind of similar to how plenty of narrow-minded people refuses to believe in say for instance Evolution! but rather stick to the equally comfy theory that, in short, one long-bearded celestial fella put EVERYTHING on the map, including the Dinosaurs! :-) :-) Only he somehow messed up his integral part in their rather simplistic 'cleansing act' and left a few of them behind in the aftermath of several massive 'Out of Space' impacts which brought several drastic changes to our little planet around 65 million loooong years ago! lol

But anyway back to the present .... where very close to a staggering 3 out of 4 (72 -73.5%) of respondents among our steady dwindling fanbase don't feel you are important to them either Mick!!!

This is the indisputable showing in February's 2 big local polls, which btw then are not much different from the result of the 2 local surveys which ran in the off-season nor from TWTD's 1st pure 'Mick in or Mick out' poll which ran about a 1 ago!
Soooo despite uninformed objections to the contrary both the 'Sample Size' (if you set the 'Population Size' i.e. *current* ITFC's fan base/ maximum of potential PR goers to a fairly gentle 20,000) the 'Confidence Level' and not the least the 'Margin of Error' of all FIVE local surveys within the last years are all TRULY EXCELLENT when compared to the Survey's Industry's own high standards!!!
....In fact the latter i.e. the 'Margin of Error' is BEYOND EXCELLENT at well below 2% (the standard is 5%!) in all the FIVE local surveys, and even if you afterwards raises the 'Confidence Level' from it's standard'ish 95% to an off the chart 99% the subsequent altered 'Margin of Error' of these approx. 2200 (TWTD) approx. 3000 (EADT) respondents still remains around twice as good and thus MORE ACCURATE & RELIABLE, at now around 2.5%, than the survey's industry's own aforementioned 'standard' of 5%!!!!!!!!!!

But ohhh of course I once again forget that primarily only the same "few" Anti-MM'ers have cared to respond to all FIVE local survey haven't they??? :-) :-) , meaning that the notorious 'Silent Majority' a.k.a the remaining up to 17,000 of the max fanbase who also almost per definition therefore allegedly more or less *worship* every thing Mick does & says unconditionally! don't BOTHER to respond .... aye that's absolutely 400% "true": For the 5 local survey run within a bloody year they *still* can't be so called BOTHERED!!! with the extreme simple act of participating with their vote. :-) :-) ROFL :-) :-)
