Hull Match Off
Friday, 2nd Mar 2018 10:58

Town have confirmed that Saturday's home game against Hull City has been postponed for safety reasons.

The pitch is expected to be playable but areas inside and around the ground are dangerous with further bad weather forecast for later today and freezing temperatures continuing at the weekend. The game will now be played on Tuesday 13th March (KO 7.45pm).

Speaking yesterday before the final decision to postpone was made at a meeting this morning, the club's stadium manager Greg Pillinger outlined the concerns.

""“The safety of the supporters is priority and if we can’t guarantee that with the conditions, then the game can’t go ahead," he told the club site

“All the concourses and seating need to be safe for the public to view the match along with the perimeter of the stadium and routes to and from bus stops, car parks and the railway station. This has involved consultation with the local authorities.

“Likewise the police and the Highways Authority have been consulted for their views on the major road networks leading to and from Portman Road.

“Importantly, our own matchday staff, both stewards, catering and corporate, all need to be able to get to the stadium safely and in the correct numbers, in particular the stewards to ensure we meet the minimum numbers to adhere to the Safety Certificate."" So, there is much more to it than getting the pitch playable.”

Manager Mick McCarthy's scheduled pre-match press conference will now not be taking place at 1pm.

Saturday's U18s and U16s matches at Bristol City have also been postponed, while all academy PDP trials and training sessions were also victims of the weather and have been rescheduled for next week.

Tonight's Ex-Players' Association Hall of Fame Dinner has also been postponed and rearranged for Friday 4th May, while Tuesday's Legends of Darts event was called off and will now take place on Wednesday 18th April.

Portman Road's last postponed first team fixture was the game against Watford on Boxing Day 2010 which was surprisingly called off 90 minutes before kick-off due to a frozen area of the pitch.

The Middlesbrough match in February 2012 was abandoned after 37 minutes with the score 0-0 as sections of the pitch had become frozen.

I thnk that the Police officers and the medics/ambulance staff could be better used to help those who really need them in this weather.

For those that believe the road networks are knackered due to bad weather I've gotta a delivery just south of the Humber tomorrow morning about 8 miles short of Hull and I was planning on going to the game after work. The only reason tomorrow's game has been called of is for fear of being sued by someone.

philwhelansdegree i agree with some of your comments, but as pictured on the header title, the road outside the ground looks pretty damm good to me!
I live in North Norfolk, the main roads are clear but minor lanes are white still,
As far as your point of Hull supporters, last night i watched the Arsenal/Man City game, thousands of City supporters at the Emirates, they never walked from Manchester?
My main point is the waste of effort and ITFC money in heating a pitch for a week, knowing full well that outside the ground the pavements were white and unsafe, err horse and gate comes to mind here!!
I still firmly believe the game could quite easily have gone ahead, the pitch is fine, so ok a bit of snow needs gritting inside, no big deal, the same goes for the pavements, all major routes are perfectly safe, even in the always forgotten North Norfolk, stupid descion by ITFC, and probably wsted thousands heating a pitch for nothing

Can we postpone all remaining fixtures until we get a decent manager?

I can remember going to a game in 1981 with my mum (Crystal Palace) and having a 'beasterly' with sleet in our faces for the whole game and what seemed a rock hard pitch with patchy snow outside the ground...just saying.

Boro game on tonight...loads of snow up in the north east, must of been lots of snow laying around outside the stadium! maybe it was the might of SKY giving Boro a backhander or the money to play the game no matter what.

Really disappointed this has been called off, I'm sure it would have been a classic.

13th against 20th.

A loss for all.

This wouldn't have happened in Sir Bobbys day, he'd have gone round the all the local houses asking them to help, there would have been school boys in short trousers all using an extension lead and their mums hairdryers to melt the snow and they wouldn't have complained about the cold oh no. That would have been a treat for them, mighty thankfull they would be merely to be asked to help.

All gone soft these days

This NEVER happened to us under Roy Keane. Goo dold Keaneo would have not obly demanded we play but he'd have started Rory Faloon to ensurethat we WON. Yet again NEGATIVE DINO MICK costs us points.

Trebs. I'm sure it would have been an end to festival of football except for the midfield who would have just needed armchairs and neckbraces.

You do wonder how Boro managed to put on a game vs Leeds on Friday night. Is there less snow in the North East than in Sufffolk? I somehow doubt it.

Well it prevents the lowest crowd since 1938??????? pays not to clear the snow.

Fairly quick thaw here in north Essex, roads quite accessible. See Southend game going ahead and all the Premiership games.

I'll think I might consider giving up my day job @Dugoutdave.

Must be Mick's fault. He gets the blame for everything else!

Don't worry Dusty, once Mick goes and Evans recruits another one of Harry Redknapp's old mates to take over, we'll have an excellent chance of getting to the top of the third division.

Hindsight being the wonderful thing it can be - this game could easily have gone ahead, no Snow / Ice around the Ground worth a mention. Certainly not enough to be a Danger to anyone.
