Spence and Hyam Start at Wednesday
Tuesday, 6th Mar 2018 19:01

Town boss Mick McCarthy makes two changes to his side for this evening’s game at Sheffield Wednesday with Jordan Spence and Luke Hyam both returning to the line-up.

Spence takes over from Dominic Iorfa, who drops to the bench, at right wing-back with Hyam forming a central midfield trio with Cole Skuse, who is playing his 200th game for the Blues, and Callum Connolly.

Mustapha Carayol seems set to play behind Martyn Waghorn with Joe Garner, who has been nursing a number of knocks, on the bench.

Wednesday make six changes from the team which lost 4-0 at Bristol City on Saturday with David Jones, former Blue Jordan Rhodes, Jacob Butterfield, Glenn Loovens, Tom Lees, who is making his 150th appearance for the Owls, and George Boyd replacing Daniel Pudil, Frederico Venancio, Joey Pelupessy and Lucas Joao, who are on the bench, and Sean Clare and Jack Stobbs, who are left out of the 18.

In addition to former Town striker Rhodes, who is without a goal in his last three games against his old club, Morgan Fox is a former Blues academy schoolboy.

Sheffield Wednesday: Wildsmith, Palmer, Lees, Loovens (c), Fox, Boyd, Jones, Butterfield, Reach, Rhodes, Nuhiu. Subs: Dawson, Joao, Pelupessy, Pudil, Preston, Abdi, Venancio.

Town: Bialkowski, Carter-Vickers, Chambers (c), Webster, Spence, Skuse, Connolly, Hyam, Knudsen, Carayol, Waghorn. Subs: M Crowe, Iorfa, Celina, Garner, Ward, Sears, Gleeson. Referee: Oliver Langford (West Midlands).

This team is exactly why McCarthy must go 3 cb's 3 defensive mids. I really hope we win but there's nothing like setting up for a point!!

With Hyam, Skuse and Connolly I don't know where the attacking intent will come from our midfield with the 3 of them playing. Looks like 3 5 2. Just hope Mick isn't playing for a point, bearing in mind our record at Hillsborough

Hyam and Skuse in the same line up? Oh dear. We may well nick a win, but add yet another defence minded central player in Connelly, it sums up the negative thinking of this manager.

Hope we win, but looks like a negative line up to me.

Wow...5-3-1-1
Glad to see Iorfa dropped, but Shuse, Hyam and Connelly.
Obviously hoping Carayol creates his own chances with his pace
I am with you Blue75 this is exactly why he MUST go.
I would say this irrespective if the result

Terrible team with what we have.

Weds have just been humped by Brizzle and he plays 1 up front!

MM this sucks. Get Santie in for Hyam. Give us a break.

.......... shore the back up again - what's the odds on us having a shot on goal ?

McCarthy will NEVER change - because he is totally incapable of doing so. Why do people still expect him to ? - it just ain't going to happen.

Bore the brains out of everyone - at best hope to nick a goal, shut up shop completely, and remember - no such thing as a bad point anyway. The proverbial DINOSAURS thinking.

Far too defensive a line up for me & I struggle to see where the link will be from the midfield to the front two?
If we win then I guess will justifiably say he got it right but with Wednesday being in a bit of a mess, we really need to get at them from the off. I fear this team is set up to sit back which will give Wednesday's fragile confidence a boost. Should have been Garner or Celina or Ward instead of Hyam

GET HIM OUT OF OUR CLUB.

Jamie Redknapp described Chelsea's approach at Man City "a crime against
football". God knows what he would make of McCarthy's tactics!
Be careful what you wish for, what a joke.
McCarthy OUT

with 73-75 the usual amount of points needed to get a play off place we need 8 wins from our last 12 games to have a realistic shout of nicking 6th. We have plenty of points on the board for relegation to not be an issue. So with all that in mind why are setting up to nick a point and not having a go and if we do get beaten at least go down fighting ??

the attitude is infuriating !!

dissapointing line up really hoped we'd go for it
plenty on the bench for the last 20 mins if we need a goal

don't mind the back 3, but you need iorfa>spence, kenlock>knudsen and ward or nydam>hyam to give some attacking options. can only hope he uses the bench earlier than usual

Team sums up MM and why he must go.! Anybody can see we have attacking MF intent left on the bench but yet again MM goes with a 5 man defense (and Knudsen is no wing back) and 3 D/MF on the pitch.

The icing on the cake will be when he subs Waghorn for Sears, Carayol for Gleeson and Iorfa for spence. all proper blokes

Blows another of the happy clappers excuses out of ghett water " if MM hadnt had injuries to the creative players "
9 defenders against a team in frefall shipping goals for fun , sums up MM perfectly bore them to death and try and nick one

I'm prepared to give MM the benefit given our recent Away results.
I'm hoping we're going to wear Wednesday down, frustrate them then chuck on Celina and Garner to nick a goal or 2.

Looks like the Dinosaur has once again set up to try and keep the mighty Sheffield Wednesday at bay.

Words fail me,he will always be like this, and rumours are that he is about to sign a contract extension.

If so Ipswich Town RIP

The Owls lost 0-4, are clearly low on morale and spirit and he sets us up with a defensive format to ( maybe ) have a shot on goal and maybe "steal" a point. Beyond words.

Bore off Mick. Bore off. Celina is the most talented footballer at the club right now but Mick would rather play 3 centre halves and 3 defensive midfielders, surely you could sacrifice one of those for a bit of pace, ability and attacking intent. We are playing a struggling Sheffield Wednesday, not Man City or Barcelona! Unbelievable. He's set up for either a scrappy nil nil or to at best sneak a one nil win. A win is a win yes, but come on Mick, do us a favour.

3 defensive midfielders against an out-of-form Sheff Wed seems overly cautious.

Also we've had the advantage of an extra day's preparation and no game on Saturday. If there's any truth in the modern theory that successive Sat Tues Sat games cause fatigue, we should be at them from the start. This is their 8th game since 10th Feb. Hoping to see Santie & Garner on 2nd half (and not for Muzzy & Waghorn).
