McCarthy: Youngster Nydam Getting Stick Was Appalling
Thursday, 15th Mar 2018 17:49

Blues boss Mick McCarthy was appalled that young midfielder Tristan Nydam was on the end of some fans’ ire during Tuesday’s fractious 3-0 home defeat to Hull City and was pleased to learn the majority of supporters had condemned their actions.

“I thought that was appalling and those who did it, I think they’re a disgrace because he’s a young kid and he’s a good player for the club,” McCarthy said.

“I asked him this morning how he felt and he said he didn’t hear it but I don’t know, I bet he didn’t know it was directed at him.

“It wasn’t singling him out, it was just the fact that he didn’t control the ball or he gave the ball away and they were ‘oo-ing’ at him. They should be giving him more encouragement than that.

“It’s sad actually that he had to come into the team when that was likely to happen. It’s sad for Ben Morris, who made his debut, but I’m sure Ben will remember his debut whatever.”

Told that the majority of fans would, on that issue at least, be singing from the same song sheet as he is, he added: “Good, I would hope I am. I would think I would be as well. Over my five and half years here the vast majority have been very supportive and lots of them continue to be that way.

“But, yes, 59-year-old fella who has been around the block a few times is one thing, 18-year-old kid that could set him back a long way.

“I’m glad you’re telling me that and I hope that’s the way people are feeling, that it’s wrong to do that to him.”

Well I think the majority of following posts from mine says that yes the fans were frustrated and showed this in the 2nd half mainly. But McCarthy is something else trying to deflect HIS appalling team line up / tactics ( knowing full well what the reaction would be) .
He's in the last days of his tenure , so expect far more mind games and stunts like this one from him after each game now.
I've frankly lost any respect I had for him now. The tossa!

@Arnie, totally agree McCarthy is now sinking to even lower depths to 'stir the pot', also fully understand your initial reaction! It's gone beyond toxic!

Is it worrying that I still kind of like the guy?

I am not saying he should stay but do you know what he is just saying it how it is he makes some good points about the fans and him pulling in the same direction it doesn't help that there is such a big divide and neither mick or us fans help the situation. There is however one man who can fix all of this and one man who has made all this happen. That man is Marcus Evans if he doesn't want the spotlight or the pressure of running a football club then he shouldn't have brought one. He has let mick down big time and more importantly he has ruined the club.

I was there on Tuesday to witness McCarthy's anti-football and was not aware of Nydam being booed. I think thin skinned McCarthy is trying to deflect attention from himself and make the supporters to be a pile of whingering no-gooders. I think our present incumbent of a manager should take a long hard look at himself and understand why the majoruty of fans have turned their backs on him and it is precisely for his brand of dreadful football...nothing else.He is responsible for what happens on the pitch and if supporters pay hard earned money to see anti football then why not...you pay your money and you take your choice.

Maybe this is "old school," but I would never boo an ITFC player, end of. I wouldn't engage in anti-manager chants either during a match, for that matter, although I understand the frustrations that bring them about.

Follow your view on this Steve. Players have been prepped thoroughly prior to the match and if they are passing backwards, sideways or hoofing it it's part of our tactics and strategy; not the fault of individual players.

Gasps of disappoint at a mis-control is NOT giving him stick. It was a natural reaction especially as it released Hull to attack. you are spot on ArnieM.

You threw him under the bus when picking him as part of that laughable line up.

Get out

I was at the game and yes there were groans when Nydam mispassed but no more than when chambers sent the ball skyward or Vickers hit a long ball that when straight for a goal kick!
We all the answer to our problem and until our man at the top makes the right decision things will not improve

I feel super mick Muck put this kid in an awful position never played with Hyam or Gleason both who were awful surely when you play young players you put them with seasoned professionals this is super Muck using youths to cover his inability to manage just clear off Muck

The wrong young centre midfielder was on the pitch. Downes being on loan with ageing loanee Gleeson in his place is symptomatic of everything that is wrong at ITFC.

I was embarrassed to be a Town fan on Tuesday. The sarcastic cheering when a pass was completed and the booing of the players who were clearly trying were a new low for this club. It was a very poor performance but fair play to the guys on the pitch, they tried to pass the ball and never hid. I understand how frustrated the fans are, I am too, but that was awful. As McCarthy says, boo him all you like but booing and mocking our own players, that's something I never thought I'd see at Portman Road.

I reckon the Hull fans must have been very confused. The ‘support' for the team would suggest we were in the bottom 3. But we aren't, we are exactly where we probably should be in terms of budget/size of club/crowd size etc. We are above Hull, Sunderland and Norwich who have all had parachute payments. All of our decent midfielders are injured and now Garner too. No question, we are not good to watch but with so many injured, we are a very poor side and looked it Saturday and Tuesday. This is not a defence of McCarthy, this is just a reality check. The last 9 games are going to be a real struggle with the players we have available.
