Downes Wins Fifth Cap in England U19s Victory
Saturday, 24th Mar 2018 15:15

Blues midfielder Flynn Downes played the full 90 minutes and picked up his fifth England U19s cap as the Young Lions beat Latvia 3-0 in the second game of their European Championships elite qualifying mini-group in Macedonia this afternoon.

Chelsea's Mason Mount opened the scoring on 22, Eddie Nketiah, who is with Arsenal, added the second seven minutes after the break and Sheffield Wednesday's George Hirst, the son of former Owl David, completed the scoring in the 82nd minute.

Downes, 19, who is currently on loan with League Two Luton Town, previously played the whole of Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over Hungary.

The England youngsters are top of the group and play the hosts, who are bottom, in their final fixture on Tuesday.

Paul Simpson’s side have already confirmed their place at the finals in Finland in July - only the winners of the group qualify - where they will defend the title they won in Georgia last summer, a team which featured currently-injured Blues midfielder Andre Dozzell, who still qualifies for the U19s.

Fellow Blues midfielder Tristan Nydam, 18, was also named in the squad but pulled out having suffered a knock in last week’s 3-0 defeat to Hull City.

Top top player in the making, the future of ITFC is very bright. Imagine a manager willing to play all this talent 👍🏻 The list of prospects is growing rapidly

Although McCarthy thinks he is never wrong,or if he does never admits it;certainly should have kept this young lad at Portman Rd,especially with the current dearth of fit midfielders at the club.

Let us hope whoever is here during the summer transfer window, that they hang on to this prospect, and give him some game time for Ipswich, not some other club ?

Great news that one of our youngsters is doing so well.

I can understand why he was sent out on loan to get game time, but with all our injuries and not having a settled midfield this season, it may have been better to have a recall clause and have got him back for the last ten games or more.

Hopefully he will be one of the first team next season.

I actually think he is better off being on loan, and I will explain why I think this:

1. He is under much less pressure at Luton. This is his debut season, and he is much better playing 90 minutes every week, playing his game and gaining confidence; than being used sparingly in the Championship and risking injury and burnout.

2. Luton play a better style of football than we do. I'd rather he was there playing real football and embracing creativity, rather than getting neck-ache and chasing 2nd balls all the time.

3. The fans love him. There's a real air of positivity at Luton due to their league position. If he makes a mistake, he's supported. They have 80%+ attendances every home game. The atmosphere at Town right now is so toxic and attendances so miserable that even though we don't mean to be mean to individual players, we must be awful to play in front of thanks to MM.

Sure, if MM wasn't here, I'd want Flynn here. But I think anywhere but Portman Road is the best place for him right now until this miserable MM regime comes to an end.

Far better out on loan at Luton, for the reasons Kentish_Tractor has stated.

To be in a team competing for promotion, rather than eight slightly meaningless fixtures (four of which in a two-thirds empty ground, accompanied by booing and angry songs).

Agree Luton is great for his development but expect him to be pushing for a starting role here next season. Certainly the general atmosphere at Luton is much better at the moment. I am confident about next season even with the squad we presently have (although probably sans Didz and Freddie but suitably replaced) if everyone is injury free for a large chunk of it. We should have one of the best midfields in the Championship.
