Ex-England Boss McClaren Linked With Town
Sunday, 25th Mar 2018 10:16

Former England boss Steve McClaren is claimed to be top of Town owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential successors to Mick McCarthy.

The current Blues boss is expected to leave at the end of the season with his contract up in the summer and, according to a report in The Sun on Sunday, Evans hopes to tempt McClaren, 56, to Portman Road.

The former Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg, Derby, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle manager is without a job at present having ended a short spell as a coaching consultant with Maccabi Tel Aviv at the end of last year.

McClaren’s name is unlikely to be the last speculatively linked with Town in the weeks to come with McCarthy’s summer departure now appearing inevitable.

As previously reported, Evans is believed to be keen on former skipper and coach Tony Mowbray, who he has twice come close to appointing Blues boss in the past, however, the 54-year-old is currently riding high in League One with Blackburn Rovers and might prove difficult to prise away from Ewood Park.

Ex-Manchester United defender Jaap Stam, 45, who was sacked by Reading earlier in the week, is also understood to be among those in Evans’s thoughts as he looks to appoint McCarthy’s replacement.

...literally fed up to the back teeth with people writing ...Bev acreful what you wish for
...are they really suggesting that mick is the best risk free option we have.
His football is dreadful , he has no common respect for the fans that pay his wages and no plan b
So I wish for ANYONE other than mick .....someone who will reconnect with the fans and at least try and play a decent brand of football rather than the dreadful, mind numbing , supporter driving away negative brand of football he does .
Sadly to have the speculation (if true) of MacLaren simply sums up that our owner is clueless, it's a business and for me demonstrates nit one clue as to how to run a football, club that is in desperate need for a full overhaul and in greater desperate need of winning hearts and minds , we are in danger of being in terminal decline...the hotly anticipated season ticket news will be a great measure in the club admitting it got some major stuff wrong and that the brand of football on show is just nit worth anywhere near the price that is currently charged....you would have thought that a bloke who built a business empire in selling highly sought after tickets for vastly inflated prices would be able to evaluate that the product he endorses won't get half the face value of the price he currently is trying To sell tickets for ...if he can't get that strategy right , there should be no surprise that he is dragging our club downwards

I said sometime ago that when MM goes (please at the end of the season) all the people on here who moan all the time will never be happy with who we get they will continue to moan, it is in there D&A.
These next few weeks are going to be very entertaining on here as the rumours start.

I'm sorry but I don't think he will be worse than Mick so I say give him a go and take us in a difficult direction!!

Every newspaper will be touting names so can't get excited. Would prefer not to appoint anyone from the football establishment but would hope for a club insider to be part of the manangement team.

That really would be the final nail in the coffin.

Evans youd have to turn the lights off yourself on your way out there would be no one else to do it

First and foremost 'relieve' 'us' and McCarthy of duty! At any other club his position would be untenable ! Thereafter, realistically we're reliant upon our 'remote, cluless, erode club owning capitalist overseers' How disturbing !

Without a change in direction I can only see the continuation of death by a thousand cuts of the last 10 years. The club needs to create an ethos that runs from bottom up.
Graham Potter at Ostersund has been part of an amazing transformation of ostersund taking them from fourth tier nobody's to beating Galatasary and Hertha Berlin in the Europa League.
Also has a masters in leadership and emotional intelligence.
Second choice would be Nathan Jones.

Oh dear god no! The ONLY positive would be he at least tries to play good football.....TRIES. Stamm would be an awful appointment, Mowbray would be the best of the three but I'm not convinced it would work and I would hate for him to come here, do badly and ruin his reputation. I would be able to at least get on board with Tony though

Steve McClaren, Malcolm McClaren, couldn't care less.

Just the news that McCarthy isn't here next season is my only concern.

Any new manager will lift the gloom that is our current predicament and give us success starved Ipswich fans a glimmer of light, a crumb of optimism, a branch to grab hold of..........

Still can't believe they are still some fans on here wanting mcarthy to stay well if they enjoy watching dour defensive football no FA cup run because of his attitude for it driving fans away making itfc a joke on final score then they come out with the injuries to bishop huws and dozzel would have made a difference if they was playing mcarthy would still be playing defensive football because he don't know anyway of playing differently the sooner he has gone the better and get Paul Hurst in from Shrewsbury

Deffo NOT Mc Claren, or Pardew , really cant see how Kuqi is in the frame, If push came to shove I'd take Mowbray , but if this story has any credibility its worrying.Evans has not made a good managerial decision since he took over, [though if McCarthy had moved on after he did what he was brought in to do that would have been a good move ] It dosnt help that Evans is not really interested in the club or clued up about football.

Gcon.. The difference is this is just paper talk MM is factually a manager who plays poor football , gets worse the longer he is at a club and is driving attendances and season ticket sales down and leaves a poor legacy for following managers to contend with , long term harm for the club . He should have gone two years ago

I, like so many others are sick to the back teeth of being told be careful what you wish for by so called fans and expert pundits alike. Why shouldn't we wish to a young hungry manager with fresh ideas, who doesn't want a massive amount of money. Who would be willing to, given enough time, work with what appears to be a decent crop of youngsters coming through. Dozzell, Downes to name just two. Mix them up with a bit of experience, we've the best keeper in the championship and probably half the premier league. So lets wish for better things. Starting with shaking MM's hand paying the rest of his contract now and move on. Get a manager in now to have look over the next 8 games and see what he thinks needs to be done.
Personally, I believe it should be someone who has a connection with the club to enable it to reconnect with the fans. However, having reading a recent interview my first choice now would be, and I know he has a connection with the numpties from Norfolk but so did Joe royale and he did a good job, Tim Sherwood. He's available straight away, you could sack MM on Monday morning and he could start Monday afternoon.

Another sure bet from the Sunday Sun!!!!!! a lazy journo earning his corn, I would not put this publication in my bathroom!! whatever rumours occur we are stuck with Mick until May, but not any longer with any hope there are plenty of young managers out there with positive ideas and with a guiding hand from Mr Burley as director of football(or whatever the flippin title is these days) I think we can drag this club back up from the depths that it has sunk into(forget the owner and money for a moment, the man responsible for our dire straits is Mick and his neglect of young players his continual stubborn blindness in(favourite) team selection and tactics we have the players just get a forward thinking manager to give them their rein, the difference would be so positive and the missing 1.000's would come back and make a club to be reckoned with!!!!

Lets face it guys we are not going to be a popular choice. The football management fraternity will look at how Mick McCarthy feels he has been treated and value that.In that fraternity he is much respected. Some parts of the national press are describing us as toxic. Marcus Evans financial investment in maintaining the club is widely recognised and respected. His recent track record on a level of funding to take the club forward is also recognised. On the plus side he does have a track record of giving managers time to try and make it happen.
So ,in my view there are three options.
1 A proven manager with a chequered history e.g. McLarenesque. Whoever it is would have the huge baggage us fans would impose on him as a big hurdle
2 Build from within, this could work, not close enough to the club to know the detail but Klug does come across as highly respected and valued. We surely must have other coaches in the club. to build on as well. Would need a director of football role for a couple of years to bring it all together. Someone with ITFC in their blood would be good, but not convinced that going back to the Burley era is the answer.
3 Go for a relatively unknown up and coming manager. Hard call and goes against Marcus Evans's previous strategies. Whoever gets the job would need a lot of goodwill and support from ALL at the club and in the community.Plus would anyone up and coming with a good track record to date choose ITFC...stagnating,looking backwards, toxic?

Decision will have a interesting outcome but please lets not deride every realistic name that comes forward.
