Town Confirm McCarthy and Connor to Leave at End of Season
Thursday, 29th Mar 2018 10:38

Town have confirmed that manager Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor will be leaving Portman Road at the end of the season.

McCarthy met owner Marcus Evans on Wednesday night and, according to a statement on the club website, “decided the move was in the best interest of all parties”.

The former Ireland boss, who took over at Portman Road in November 2012, and Connor will stay in charge for the remainder of the season. The duo's contract is up in the summer.

“Mick and I had a discussion and we both agreed that this was the best way forward for him and for Ipswich Town,” Evans told the club website.

“It never got to the point where we actually talked about a new contract. It just felt right that it was time for us both to look at different options. “Mick has been a fantastic manager for this football club, ably supported by Terry who has also been invaluable in the development of the team.

“When Mick arrived, we looked to be on the way to relegation. He saved us from that and then took us to the play-offs within two years.

“In his six years here he has made us a very competitive club in what is a very competitive league. No one looks forward to playing Ipswich.

“He has also been instrumental in developing our youth policy and has overseen the progress of a number of our young players from the academy into the first-team and nurtured their development in line with the club’s strategy.

“He’s immensely popular with all the staff at Portman Road and has built a strong backroom team who will provide important continuity as we move into a new era.

“On a personal note, I have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with him which is vital between owner and manager at any football club.

“Mick will see out his contract here and then we will look to make an announcement regarding his successor in due course.

“In the meantime, I want to put on record my sincere thanks to Mick for the job he has done here as our manager and urge supporters to get behind him and the players so that we can finish the season as strongly as possible.”

McCarthy added: “I had a good discussion with Marcus and we feel this is the right thing to do for me and for Ipswich Town.

“I have loved my time here and I am proud of what I have achieved over the last six years - and the relationship I have enjoyed with the players and all the staff at the club in that time.

“I won’t be leaving with any regrets. I have given everything for Ipswich Town and I will see out my contract in the same way.”

As always people are quite obviously very fundamentally entitled to their opinions, but IMHO some of them are really sliiightly sickening in all their awesome (NOT!) deludeness -- but not at all unexpected though! LOL -- not merely these here types for instance:

1) "THANKS FOR EVERYTHING INCL. SAVING US MICK" or worse "THANKS FOR EVERYTHING INCL. SAVING US MICK ....AND HERE COMES THE ABYSS!" hymns.
Thanks for what exactly??? Forget for a second all the many detrimental things Clueless Marcus has done, but Mick and Mick's 1-dimensional 'Ways of The Dino' has *undebatable* & on it's merry own caused so much long-time *damage* not only to club's once very sizable fanbase but certainly also to the club's once proud & revered image & reputation as seen from pretty much ANYWHERE else on the map when it comes to everything to do with the actual football & football (incl. youth) philosophies having been practiced here at ITFC for the past 6 years!
Besides there is simply NOOOO credible evidence whatsoever that other ultra defensive-minded managers advocating them *exactly*, same early dreadful 'Park-The-Bus' like tactics & then in subsequent years just inherently cowardly hedgehog 'Let's-Defend-With-7-8-9-People-And-Simply-Try-To-NICK-IT' tactics, A) wouldn't have kept the team in this division! B) would in some way have hmmm "stopped" Murph from scoring his very flukish & phantomic 27 league goals or "prevented" other contenders especially Derby's inexplicable late season collapse which combined *famously* enabled the team to end up 'pushing above their weight' so to speak and land that much talked about *1* play-off spot during the last 6 years!

2) But additionally also all these "NOW!!! LET'S SHOW MICK SOME RESPECT IN HIS FINAL 8 GAMES" hymns as well?!
The beyond arrogant, chronically foul-mouthed & severely 'Delusion of Grandeur' suffering dino of man NEVER EVER showed me any respect whatsoever!!!!!!!!!!
[Nor did he probably sincerely do -- besides at some fancy banquet mayhaps -- to any of the 'In Mick We Blindly Trust' and/or 'Points-Fixated-Only' faction members. Likely they were simply too complacent, too much "in luv" or otherwise too "blind" to not notice it!! lol) or BTW on the time & money I spend on him & Marcus's way too often insomnia-curing or just incompetent rag-tag team ....on the contrary!!! including on numerous away games I've been to Mr. Etiquette a.k.a. Mick McCarthy for whatever LAME disgruntled personal reason not even "bothering" to applaud the predominantly quite fabulous away fans at games end???!!!

Naah sorry folks! "GOOD RIDDANCE!!!" is all I can really boil it down to say! ....and not only should this "marriage" for MANY well-founded reasons sadly have been broken up several years ago, but it's so much more sad that £700+ mill net worth Marcus Evans continues to be so tightaZzzed & so weak that he will not pay Mick now (or back in January rather!), for all the blatantly obvious MANY future benefits that come with such a very 'pocket-change' like move!

PS: Oh according to @Gcon and his ilk the so called "Silent Majority" ....of inferred Mick worshippers to some degree or another ....should be as much as maybe about 15,000-16,000 thousands strong LOL i.e. all those among our nowadays optimal & but unmistakable quite crippled total ITFC fanbase that couldn't be "bothered" to participate with their vote in any of the 5 local MM In / MM Out survey with the last 14 months .... so ehmmm now let me personally see 15,000-16,000 downvotes here on this particular post for all my soooo extra extra disrespectful or outright heinous words about the ONE & ONLY MESSIAH 'The Departing Dino' above :-) :-) C'mon! now I dare you, C'mon! :-) :-)

I think this is the right decision at the right time. MM has run his course here. I think he did his best on a shoestring, but for all his efforts, he never warmed to the club and us to him. Personally I wish him every success in the future.

He is a small part of a much bigger problem.

The coming weeks are critical for the image of the club.

The appointment of a bright young manager with a reputation for attacking football or a grizzled has been/never was with 10 men behind the ball and a long list of mediocrity with various clubs? Only time will tell.

My guess is that all this talk about attendances is about to be exposed for the nonsense it is though - I reckon best case scenario with price cuts and a decent manager and we won't average over 18k next season. Look at attendances for the 99/2000 season when we were last promoted, playing attacking football with a bright young manager and you'll see my point.

Why is he staying for the rest of the season?

Are we still trying for top six, Mick?

None of the fans he has offended are coming back until the stink around Portman Road has cleared off.

Some of you are so gullible. McCarthy's terrible football has NOTHING TO DO with lack of funds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Worst manager in ITFC history, he's ripped the heart and soul out of our club!!!!!!

Calling the fans numbskulls?

Oh dear,just can't help himself can he?...what a pillock.

I hope and pray that whoever comes in here next gets us playing good football and into the play-offs just to prove to the dino what can be done with tactical nouse, attacking ambition and faith in your players to go out and win rather than not to lose.

Plus I bet it's really pi55ed him off being told with 8 matches still to go as he won't be able to play his silly mind games with us numbskulls anymore.

Did a great thing for ITFC and did get us to the top six so no doubt a good gaffer. However, I feel this the right decision as the footy since last season started has been awful. This is weird as I have only been an ITFC fan for 3 and a half years [ I am 11] so no manager has left since I have supported us. UP THE TOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep totally agree with mickzzzz, hindsight is of course a wonderful thing, three points to ‘vaguely cover'; McCarthy should have walked after his ‘rag tag' team overachieved and subsequent ‘no funds for you! can you do it on the cheap?'.....thereafter McCarthy destroyed ‘the Ipswich way brand' over a prolonged tenure! Added to this the pinnacle ‘f***offfangate' has also caused unrepeatable carnage between himself and the ‘majority' of supporters! It's no wonder the ‘majority of morons' won't ‘wave' Mouthy McCarthy' off!

I don't see how he destroyed the ‘Ipswich way' single handidly! Was the football of a better standard under Jewell? Keane? Magilton style was the last and that was 5 years before McCarthy even came here. Listen I understand he went too far at the scum in his reaction, but I
It would be a better man than me who would contain himself scoring minutes from end of a derby game having recieved so much stick for such a long time now. Yes the standard of football has been negative and boring but I do think he has done well on a lower end budget.
I look forward to the new appointment, I think people have been so focussed on getting rid of Mick that very very few posts talk about who will replace him. I really hope that the new man comes in with an exciting brand of attacking football and is backed by Evans financially and we really push next year. My honest opinion is I think we will go with another steady eddie who is out of work at moment who will be told he has a limited budget. GROUNDHOG DAY ha ha.
I will have my opinion....... gamble Brian Klug promoted . Fits the 5 year plan idea of pushing the youth and he has great contacts with spurs and who else knows the ‘Ipswich way' better? Few

Any owner who claims to have a plan to get us promoted would not have sat back and watched his investment(tax loss) in our club fall through the floor in the last 3 seasons due to the manager the man would in commerce would have been fired long ago, credit to Mick for his first 2 seasons, but after that the slide began(as at every club he has been at) when his blinkered approach took over he thought he was bigger than I.T.F.C hence his attitude towards the fans and the eff you attitude I will put my mates in every game and get(4&8) new contracts for them explains all, I think in all but words he has been fired as the contract that he fully expected( with his total belief that he was untouchable!!) to be extended re the clubs option has not been done so hey ho big man you have shot yourself in the foot big time, your tenure has been interesting to say the least, but now you will be gone and for me that is great news(my fingers are ready to renew my direct debit for next season) we the fans have not deserved either your attitude or your crap favourite induced football in the last 3 years, while as a human being i hope the crowd in your last home games go easy on you i cannot blame them if you get a load of stick(you have stopped me and 1.000's of others attending) as it will be deserved not that your arrogance(great manager me) will let it come home to you that you have effed our club up big time!!!!! the last picture of you as manger of our club will probably be you putting the finger up to the crowd as you go down the tunnel for the last time which would just about sum it up you have been paid millions by this club for wrecking it, you don't give a toss, well big man neither do the 1'000s you have driven away, good bye!!!(and that is being polite)

Now that the deed is done I'm more concerned with who comes in next than MM going and the terms of him leaving etc. Some of the names on the speculation list for next manager are enough to scare you to death!

Not quite April 1st so must be true,or will I wake up lol.

Seriously though think the right decision has been made by both parties;but from the interview with MM and club statement seems that he was not offered an extension to ponder(thank goodness).

I don't know whether this has happened anywhere before where a Manager continues ,even when he knows he is going;but certainly in my 55 years of following Town, sure it hasn't happened here anyway.

In view of this it will be strange for manager, players and supporters for the next few games, especially at home;and I wouldn't like to pre-guess the atmosphere, especially at home games.

I would however think it will remove some of arrogance that Mr McCarthy has displayed over the last 18 months, and pre/post match interviews will be interesting.

Have noted that in interviews with both the manager and his captain, nothing said by MM about supporters, and only a passing reference by Chambers who stressed how all the staff were sorry to lose such a great bloke ?!

HAPPY DAYS!! For me and many others this is great news, in my opinion MMs contract should never have been extended 2 years ago (and I said so at the time) as the position we are in and the quality of football has not improved at all during this period. All that has happened is a fall in attendances and a bigger and bigger rift between fans and the club (something that could have been avoided) Now it is time for us all to stop arguing amongst ourselves and get behind the new manager whoever he may be and the team, my only worry is who Evans appoints as his track record to date has been abysmal. I am now in the market for a season ticket!! COYB

I was never a Mick fan and was not happy when he was appointed. However, we do owe him a great debt of gratitude for keeping us up after the mess that Paul Jewell left us in. Sadly over the last few years the entertainment has been pretty dire, (except the Toon game last season which proved that we could play good, on the deck, passing football. Thanks for your efforts Mick and TC but your style, or lack of it, was not for me. Hope Evans gets the next appointment right, (fourth time lucky) but, please, not McClaren.

Let's not forget the style of football served up .. the players played out of position.. the dire tactics..
His contempt for us as fans doesn't bother me ..
I am already 2 large voddies in..
I salute you Mick .. thank fuc# your going!

Noted the following on the BBC website related to Blackurn Rovers and Tony MOWBRAY's view of fans following a bit of booing.

Rovers, coincidentally have a current goal difference of 35 - can't remember, have we ever made it to double figures under Mick?

Blackburn Rovers were spurred on to beat Bury after being booed by their own fans at the end of the first half, says boss Tony Mowbray.

The 2-0 win that put Rovers top of League One followed second-half goals by Danny Graham and Adam Armstrong.

"I think it's disappointing but you don't want to criticise the fans," Mowbray told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"They come to see us win and be entertaining and generally at home so far this year we have."

The 54-year-old continued: "As the players went down the tunnel at half-time, the fans were booing and I told them that's the expectations of the football club.

"If anything it proved a motivation for the team to go and get the job done."
