Lincoln Boss Plays Down Town Link
Thursday, 29th Mar 2018 17:26

Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley has become the first manager to distance himself from the Town job which will become vacant in the summer when Mick McCarthy departs, news which the club confirmed this morning.

Cowley, whose then-Vanarama National League Imps beat the Blues in the FA Cup last season before winning promotion to League Two, quickly emerged as the early bookies' favourite to succeed McCarthy.

At time of writing the one-time Braintree Town boss is the 13/8 favourite with SkyBet ahead of former Blues skipper and coach Tony Mowbray, who is currently in charge at Blackburn, at 5/2, then the currently unattached Shefki Kuqi at 3/1, ex-England manager Steve McClaren, who was linked by one of Sunday’s tabloids, at 9/1, Colchester boss and ex-Blues defender John McGreal at 10/1 along with VVV-Venlo boss Maurice Steijn, who was the subject of Town rumours last summer.

Ex-Brentford and Rangers manager Mark Warburton is 16/1 and former Reading boss Jaap Stam 22/1 with Luton’s Nathan Jones and the much-travelled Uwe Rosler.

Quizzed on the links with the Town job Cowley said he and his brother and assistant Nicky are purely concentrating on matters at Sincil Bank, at least for the moment.

“Our focus remains wholeheartedly here,” he told Lincolnshire Live We’re eternally thankful for the opportunity we’ve been given here.

“We’ve been shown great loyalty by the people of Lincoln. When we’re shown loyalty we always like to reciprocate.

“Our total focus is here. We’re at the business end of the season. We’ve worked very, very hard since the end of last season to put ourselves in this position.

“It would be crazy of us to think of anything else but Lincoln City and what we’re doing between now and hopefully the end of May [when the play-off final will take place].”

Sounds like it's worth putting a bet on him after that statement

Cheap salary young and Hungry shouldn't be hard to persuade.

Lincoln has been a success story. But aren't they even more hoof and physical than what we are?

I like him as a manager, but is he ready to take on a Championship club - yet? May be a tad early for him. Could be a risky appointment.

Take a chance on a young manager, who has seen plenty of success in lower leagues with small budgets.

Or

Take a 'safe' run-of-the-mill manager, that will try to implement 'his style' of football that hasn't worked long term at previous clubs?

I know where my vote is...

Cowley plays direct, physical football. Not sure his appointment will placate fans looking for a return to playing 'the Ipswich way', whatever that is.

Being young doesn't always mean hunger or being tactical innovation.

For me, for what's its worth, I'd like to see Warburton or Tarricco as a more leftfield appointment.

Oh dear, please no. If we thought MM plays hoofball the Cowleys are even more direct in their style. This would be a disappointing appointment.

Paul Tisdale has done a great job at Exeter. Plays entertaining football on a very tight budget, has taken them from the National League and up to League One, albeit to be relegated down to League Two. Exeter are now established as League Two promotion contenders. Tisdale has a sound record of playing entertaining football on a shoestring.

Cowley has ‘utilised' tools and environment and proved more than capable at each appointment . He deserves his ‘chance' ! Full of energy and vigour! Knows the lower division players and this could be pivotal considering ‘lack of funds'! My number one choice !

Tisdale (Exeter) or Jones (Luton)

Not sure anyone who advocates this appointment know much about Lincoln's style of play, Or they very much enjoy route one direct football that the majority of us have been complaining about.

Tony Mowbray for me knows the club and plays decent football and has done a good job at Blackburn after the state they where in last year

It's unfair to suggest Cowley would only play hoof-ball - a progressive manager adapts his style to the players at his disposal, and it's not as if Braintree or Lincoln can bring in many skilled players

From what I hear, I make Kuqi the favourite for the job. My hope from what appears to be available? Warburton, two of our biggest strengths this season have been Waggy and Garner whom he previously had at Rangers, and in the latter case was gutted he couldn't sign at Forest. That gives a bit of continuity in our favour. Cowley, I think it's too soon, huge step up, I think it's a risk we can't afford at this stage. Just my opinion of course.

Ive said for 12 months we should get Cowley brothers. Young talented manager. Cant believe some of the comments about his style here, they play passing football that builds a teams confidence. Wait and see if he comes.

I for one would welcome his appointment but then again i'm not over there paying my hard earned cash to watch who ever Evans selects. Couple of years back Frank Yallop, ex Town player was doing ok here but now out of work...maybe?

I reckon Evans should give Alan Brazil the job😂

I am good friends with both brothers and played with them in South Essex, as they worked their way up the leagues..
Unfortunately the myth of hoofball is part of the Cowley belief, press, work hard and deliver quickly.
Look at the guy they have ufront Rhead, he can only play one way so the team play to him.
On a separate note 2 great guys who are very approachable and say it as it is.

If we make sure of two things, those must be that the new manager has a passing style and can develop young players.
