McCarthy Leaves Town With Immediate Effect - Updated With Audio
Tuesday, 10th Apr 2018 22:16

Town boss Mick McCarthy’s departure with immediate effect has been confirmed. McCarthy, who had been due to stay until his contract is up in the summer, announced his departure at the end of his post-match press conference with the club releasing a statement soon afterwards.

“I spoke with Marcus at the weekend and we agreed that it was in the best interests for me, the players and the club that I move on now,”he told the club site.

“I said I would see the season out but it’s been a new experience and it’s not one I have been enjoying to be honest.

“I have continued to do my job to the best of my ability but there is something missing and I’m not comfortable with that.

“I have had a great time here and worked with some great people and to all those who have given me wonderful support over the last five and a half years - and there are many - I want to put on record my personal thanks.

“The players here can look forward to a new challenge with whoever comes in and I want to wish them, the staff and the club the best of fortunes.

“I’ll also be looking forward to a new challenge elsewhere. I’ve still got a lot of football in me.”

Assistant boss Terry Connor has also left the club with immediate effect following tonight’s match. It's understood the duo will say their goodbyes to the players at Playford Road on Thursday.

Town will announce who will be the caretaker-manager in the next day or so but we understand Bryan Klug and Geraint Williams will be put in temporary charge.

“I want to reiterate my thanks to Mick and Terry for their fantastic service to this football club,” owner Marcus Evans added.

“I have always enjoyed a good relationship with Mick and that continues and on behalf of the football club I want to wish him and Terry the very best of luck going forward. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them back here next season in the away dressing room!”

McCarthy announced his departure, which would have happened whatever tonight's result, at the end of his press conference when asked about the fans’ reaction to debutant Barry Cotter’s substitution, which you can hear below.

“A disgraceful reaction to that. But listen, I won’t have to listen to that again because that’s my last game, I’ll see you when I see you. I’m out of here,” he said as he got up and walked out.

Tonight's game was McCarthy's 279th in charge of the Blues, the 59-year-old having taken charge on November 1st 2012. Of those games, he won 105, drew 78 and lost 96, a win percentage of 37.63.

Earlier in the press conference, McCarthy had commented on the game: “I thought the lads were excellent, the first half was a tough game. Kieffer had hit the cross-bar, we both had chances. I thought we got better and better and was really thrilled with the result.

“We’ve had a clean sheet so that’s pleasing. We’ve not been good at home recently so we might have been a bit nervy, I don’t know, but we played really well in the second half and we should have won by more in the end.

“Jonas is a really good player for us and I’m delighted for him. Jonas is a proper player and I’m delighted for him.”

McCarthy was asked what was left to play for with the Barnsley win mathematically meaning the Blues cannot now make the play-offs: “Pride, points, always want to win.”

Adding to his earlier comments on the performance, he added: “I hope [fans will have left having enjoyed it]. It was a good performance and Barry Cotter caught everybody’s eye, another one that it looks like we’ve done really well on.

“He’s just got personality, he’s got a twinkle in his eye, he’s got technical ability, he’s quick and powerful, he’s got everything to be a player, I’ve just fancied him ever since he walked through the door. He came as a centre-half, I said ‘No chance, he’ll be a right-back’ and that’s what he’s going to be.

“He’s going to be a good player for Ipswich Town. He’s been a really good signing. If that’s his standard on his debut then he's only going to get better.

“He’s great, he’s not a shy boy, he’s a great fella, that’s why I put him in, I knew it wouldn’t faze him, he’s got really good ability as well.”

Was his withdrawal pre-planned? “Not at all, he was knackered. I said to him at half-time, he had his socks down, I said, ‘You tell me if you’re struggling’.

“He’d just let the wide player run on him twice and, of course, he wasn’t going to tell me because he wants to stay on the pitch.

“And that’s the art of management, knowing when to take him off and Wardy was brilliant, he was great,” he added before being asked about the fans’ reaction to the change.

The good news is it'll take 2 years to get to a promotion chasing position. the bad news is that it will also probably take 2 more managers. And at that time we'll be wondering how did our club ever let it get so bad that fighting for promotion back to the Championship was the best we could hope for?

I wish Mick and Terry all the best for the future. They've done a good job overall with very limited resources and will no doubt walk into another job and do well. He is leaving this club in a much stronger position than in 2012 when he arrived. All the best for the future MM and TC!

the way that MM and TC have been treated by so called Ipswich Town supporters is disgusting to say the least. These so called supporters are indeed no more that puppet handlers they pull the strings and demand MM do as they want. Why they seem to think that their knowledge of football and tactics are better than the managers is absurd and unbelievable. I wish the new manager lots of luck as going by the actions of our so called "supporters" he is going to need it

Absolutely the right decision as things had become at first stale & recently just horrible. Mick staying any longer would have just made things worse for club, fans & Mick himself Did excellent job in his first 4 years but last 18 months it's gone very wrong. Now it's time for change. Good luck Mick & TC

Wish him all the best, completely agree it was time for him to go (altogether, not the timing of his departure - that should have been handled better).

It's a real shame that in five and a half years, it's only now he can thank the supporters. Could he not have done that at least once before? Especially the travelling support after an away defeat or after every single derby game or cup game or game on tv that we didn't win?

When MM took over a Wolves fan,I know, accurately predicted how things would go -
Stability, improvement and we would avoid relegation. That was the good bit. However, we would have to expect boring, sterile football and a man who wouldn't listen to advice / criticism. The fans would turn on him ( as they did at Wolves ) and it would end it tears. He isn't a fortune teller, just someone who has witnessed first hand that MM's greatest strength - doing things his way -
Is also his Achilles heel. Good luck to his new club as leopards don't change their spots
. Have fans treated him harshly probably so, did he deserve all the abuse probably not but you can't slag off your own fans, tell them of F off and then lie about it.
Dutch manager sounds promising

This man is not as brash as he portrays - sad fact is (if there is one) - was, he loaded, and fired, his own gun.

Only got himself to blame - confrontational, contentiousness, and showing contempt for fans, being his massive downfall.

Most people - even his staunch critics - wanted to respect / like him - it didn't happen, and he only has himself to blame for that.

Unbelievable the number of people wishing McCarthy well for the future and thanking him for what he did here : with the exception of steering us away from relegation when he took over from Jewell, he's been abysmal. One play-off place? Pathetic : and that was the best this arrogant, deluded, self-centred obnoxious liar could manage. He and his lap-dog Connor WILL walk into another job, because the gormless 'experts' within the game still rate them, and within a couple of years the poor s0ds that support that club will be baying for them to go, and whichever club it is will surely not be as stupid as ours in retaining the clueless 2 for a ridiculously long period of time like we have. Good riddance, and I wish nothing but bad things to both of you.

My point was that maybe the kid was knackered or give him a warm applause from the crowd. To hear boos will do nobody any favours.
In regards to McCarthys attitude towards players maybe he had just had enough of all the stuff that was being said about him

No booing that I heard was aimed at the youngsters it was aimed at the decision to take him off. Young Cotter had a wonderful 45 minutes, but I guess his legs ran out of steam second half. Folami didn't really make the same impact he did on his debut, but we have to have a little patience with these lads. It's got to be one hell of a step up from what they have been used to.

What a relief when Mick and TC arrived at the club. At last Evans had appointed a team who knew what they were doing and could command the full respect of the players, gradually weeding out those who lacked commitment. Steering us away from the false position of rock bottom of the Championship looked effortless in the end, Evans announcing the unnecessary £1m bonus for Mick when he looked like he had just about done the job. Don't blame Mick for that, kerching! The attritional high energy, bypass the midfield style of play (and training I would imagine) was only to be expected and definitely not to everyone's taste, including mine. That it wasn't better, didn't result in promotion and deteriorated was in my view down to four factors: 1. Mick not being satisfied with his series of wing options important in his time at Wolves and Sunderland; 2. Evans continual failure to set the club up with a proper professional sports MD - didn't he inherit one in Derek Bowden? 3. His "relationship" which all the managers praise highly but seem to lack understanding; 4.Lack of cash particularly at crucial moments. As for recouping some of his commitment, well, Evans now knows that running a football club is an expensive business and perhaps hasn't grasped that if you regularly sell your best assets you are probably not going to get your money back with bells on in the Premier League. Maybe there is a 5. Is the number of injuries, and not only this season, really an accident or down to the demands of the first team manager, coach? I wish Mick and Terry all the best for the future and am grateful for them stabilising the club with the set-up that they have been given.

"From coming in when we, the club, were on seven points from 13 games and looked like they were going to go out of the league. I think we got 54 points that year, that was a really good result, a lot of points to stay up."

And where are we now? We won the first seven games this season and we're on 54 pts with 4 games left.

Five and half years, No pressure. No big game wins. No Cup runs. 6000 less fans at PR.Forget the man, on purely footballing terms he deserved to be sacked. Instead he's been indulged and left to do what was best for Mick McCarthy. And even that wasn't enough. Yet again he disrespects the club and goes back on his word as he flounces out of yet another club.

He has left like all his other clubs in a complete mess. Take away the 7 loan players wer will have to start again from scratch. The next manager has a terrible mess to inherit. But that comes because ITFC has been doing what's best for MM for too long.

ME has large amount of responsibility for this messs, but so does Mick "It's all about Me" McCarthy.

Thanks Mick and TC! Wish you both all of the best for the future. Without them we would've if got relegated to league one! But they kept us up, we made the playoffs in 2015, but the last two years hasn't been the progression we were hoping for and need. All the best

"Good riddance, and I wish nothing but bad things to both of you."

We are lucky to be living in a time where there are platforms like TWTD where we can all express our views. But this kind of comment makes you wonder, doesn't it? If there were a TWTD back in the Cobbold era would such charming and courteous words still be spouted?

Luckily, as the down votes on the opening comment suggest, that kind of thinking is very much in the minority.

Essexbluey .......... nice thought of all ITFC fans singing off the same song sheet - can't really see it happening tho' unfortunately. McCarthy has certainly split the supporters, and some (blatantly obviously) will have far less ambition for the Club than others.

It has become so obvious that some 'fans' are quite prepared to accept an empty Portman Road, no entertainment - and even go as far as condoning such. These people are actually sorry to see McCarthy leave ... it proves my point. All it does is serve into the hands of encouraging an Owner who is questionable (other than words) as to his true ambition for the Club, and the reason for ownership of such.

If the Club has more about it than mid table Championship Football - How can anyone be sad / sorry that McCarthy has gone ...... ???

Like this statement, or not, there's far more ambition and passion for success at Carrot Road being shown.
The ITFC objective has to be to stay above and emulate anything they stand for - thus being the true PRIDE OF EAST ANGLIA - in not just fictitious and hollow words.

Let's face it, if McCarthy had been managing any other team he would have been sacked maybe 18 months ago. Some have come here arguing that the fans haven't shown him enough respect this season, but they've actually been pretty patient compared to how supporters would have behaved at other clubs.
