Gerrard Linked With Blues Job
Sunday, 15th Apr 2018 09:47

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is the latest name to be linked with the Town manager’s job.

According to The Sun on Sunday, Town owner Marcus Evans has “sounded out” Gerrard on whether he would be interested in succeeding Mick McCarthy via a third party.

Gerrard is currently the U18s coach at the Anfield academy but is expected to eventually step up into senior management, whether that’s now or after he has gained further coaching experience at a lower level.

The 37-year-old, pictured above in action for England against Croatia at Portman Road in 2003, was previously linked with the MK Dons, while other clubs are also said to have shown interest.

Gerrard’s England team-mate Frank Lampard is also thought to be a potential candidate for the Town job and it's understood that the ex-Chelsea and West Ham man has had some contact with the Blues regarding the role as he similarly looks to start his management career.

We understand Town have received very significant interest since McCarthy announced he would be moving on at the end of the season a fortnight ago before exiting ahead of that schedule on Tuesday.

Lincoln manager Danny Cowley is still the bookies’ favourite for the role at 2-1 with Bet Victor despite the Imps boss and his brother and assistant Nicky being close to signing new extended contracts at Sincil Bank.

Ex-Blues skipper and coach Tony Mowbray remains second-favourite at 5-1 with Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst - a manager very much in the up and coming mould Town are understood to favour appointing - now third-favourite at 10-1.

Elsewhere in the Sunday tabloids, Mowbray is linked with his old job at West Brom, who have also been mentioned in connection with former Blues boss McCarthy. Another ex-Baggies manager Derek McInnes, currently at Aberdeen, is also claimed to be among the leading candidates.

Meanwhile, the Sunday People claims the Blues and Sunderland are keen on signing Reading keeper Jonathan Bond when he comes out of contract in the summer.

Bond, 24, who has been on loan at Peterborough this season, started his career with Watford and had loan spells at Brackley Town, Dagenham and Redbridge, Forest Green Rovers and Bury before joining the Royals, for whom he has made only 14 appearances in 2015.

He was with Gillingham in the first half of last season before joining Posh, for whom he has been a regular starter until recent weeks, in the summer.

Town may well be in the market for another senior keeper in the summer with Bartosz Bialkowski expected to receive interest from January suitors Crystal Palace among others.

However, with the management situation unlikely to be resolved until the summer, links with players should currently be taken with a pinch of salt.

Surely not! Why 'gamble' on a 'newbie' when Evans wouldn't 'gamble' on an 'oldbie' season after play offs?????

Just think how much publicity the Marcus Evans Group would get with Gerrard and/or Lampard in charge.

Oh, forgot about the football, silly me!

usually I am optimistic, but have no faith that Evans will get this right, He simply isn't qualified to make the decision.

No thank you, we don't need another management appointment which Sky thinks is bigger than the club itself... do we not all remember every time something happened in football, Sky would ask Roy Keane, not the current Ipswich Manager, just simply ex Manchester Utd midfielder Roy Keane... I was sick of it!!?

Tbh I wouldn't mind unsworth. Seems to have built himself a very good reputation at the Everton under 23s.

If Marcus Evans isn't prepared to put his hands in those very deep pockets for a new manager, then Stevie G or Frank Lampard could be a stroke of genius. Yes, they don't have any experience, but surround themselves with experienced back room staff... and which player in their right mind wouldn't want to play for an ex-legend? Call in a few favours and we could find ourselves watching some very exciting young talent next season. Neither are Roy Keane mental, so we should be Ok on that score too.

Well spotted bluebudgie! I was just quoting a Bobby Robson interview when he was probably using poetic licence! Unless there were three others we knew nothing about?

I remember my dad being incensed by the reasons O'Farrell gave for turning us down and was delighted when Man U soon sacked him!

Let's pray ME gets it right this time.

To stand any chance of getting the right person ME and IM ought to enlist a knowledgeable person who knows both the Ipswich way and English football to advise on a list of candidates to make a very important decision. Mick Mills and or Terry Butcher would be a good fit to advise the top two who have very limited knowledge on making an appointment. But alas I cannot see that happening.

I think a high profile appointment like Gerrard or Lampard would do the club no end of good in both terms of publicity and kudos.

I'm not too sure why the Cowley brothers are the favourites for the job . In the last month they have lost 4-1 at home to Crewe Alex and again lost 1-0 at Port Vale yesterday . Both of those teams have been dire this season !! They may be ok but not a certainty . Paul Cook however ?

Let's face it,just about everyone mentioned so far would get mentioned with any other championship club looking for a manager, this is why our owner needs to take advice from former town players who understand what the club and our supporters need rather than just picking big names and hoping for the best.

We need someone who wants to build something here over 5 years or more, not a big name ex-player using us as work experience OR journeymen managers picking up another fat pay packet.

So Gerrard would leave his beloved Liverpool (reported by The Sun that is boycotted on merseyside) to come to our club that is poorly run and resourced by our current owner. Do me a favour??. Non story. We will get the chuckle brothers from lincoln (and that will be a disaster!!).

I know a really good man with the ability to run on a small budget and has lots of experience of promotions from the championship, trouble is that you would have to get rid of our stupid fans first! Oh no we can't have him because we just sacked him!
