Milne: Considered Search for New Boss to Run Past End of Season
Monday, 23rd Apr 2018 09:55

Blues MD Ian Milne has reiterated that Town are unlikely to appoint their new manager before the end of the season with owner Marcus Evans carrying out a “considered search” for the successor to Mick McCarthy. Fans are likely to learn more on Evans’s thoughts regarding the hunt for a new boss in the next few days with the owner’s first on-camera interview expected to be released this week.

“You’re quite right to ask and no there isn’t any news,” Milne told BBC Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch when quizzed on developments prior to Saturday’s game against Aston Villa.

“No choice has been made. It’s still very much a search, Marcus has not made his mind up.

“It’s going to be a proper search, a considered search, it will take us probably past the end of the season, so be patient with us. We all want the right manager and the processes will take place.”

Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who is understood to have held discussions with Evans, are currently the joint-favourites for the job at 5-1 with Bet Victor.

Paul Cook, whose Wigan side secured their return to the Championship at the weekend, is behind them at 6-1 with Tony Mowbray, whose Blackburn team now looks all but certain to join them, the fourth favourite at 10-1.

St Mirren’s Jack Ross, whose squad has already secured the Scottish Championship title, is fifth favourite at 16-1 along with VVV-Venlo’s Maurice Steijn, who has played down reports in Holland claiming he has already been lined up to take over at Heerenveen this summer.

Milne says supporters will hear from Evans in the near future: “Hopefully during the next week, we’re doing it at the moment and hopefully [it will be out] by the end of the week. Bear with us on that one.

“And it’s very important that the owner talks to the fans. He’s not hiding from it, he wants to do it, he’s [written pieces for the programme] and [been interviewed by Mark Murphy for] radio and it’s so important that he does this. He is coming out with that.

“I have my place to get the messages over and hear what the fans say and I thoroughly enjoy that and I’m always open to the fans, the same as my colleagues. We are approachable but I totally understand they also want to hear from the owner.”

Ian Milne has an amazing talent of using a lot of words to provide no information at all.

We are clearly waiting for the outcome of the playoffs/ promotions, before trying approach the Mangers involved with these Clubs. But interview all other prospects in the meantime.

Aaahh...no worries. Wenger will sort it out. That's why he quit Arsenal.

Based on the betting:
Danny Cowley - Hoof ball - No thanks
Steve Gerrard - interesting, nothing to lose by appointing him - it would remove the monotomy factor (but can't ignore the similarity in circumstance to Roy Keane)
Paul Cook - Safe option, but not a bad one
Mogga - Yes please. First choice
Jack Ross - Winning the Scottish Championship is akin to beating your mates at championship manager - no thanks
Maurice Steijn - Don't know enough about him
Arsene Wenger - i heard he's out of work ( he might be dead though by the sound of some of the tributes i've heard)

All makes for an interesting few weeks, and interesting is not something we've had around PR for a few months/years.

Pleased to hear Steijn is still in the running.

Will settle for Wenger though 😀.

Whoever it turns out to be, a titanic task awaits to turn this club around.

Whoever comes in will be given time - by the fans and the owner, and support - by the fans, how about Mr Evans having a another stab at actually getting us up? The Premiership bubble is looking like bursting in the next 5-10 years, and that could mean Marcus never gets his debts repaid... crack on, son

Paul Cook is the stand out candidate by a mile . He has made Wigan the best team by a mile in the league with good attacking football ( just look at his scores , and the only english manager to have beaten Guidiola this year ). However would he come ?? Pay him the same as MM and given him a decent budget , that might tempt him ?. I saw Steijn's VVV against ajax this week and it seemed there was no plan to counteract ajax's football. Love Mogga as a player and ipswich stallwart but his managerial CV has not been that impressive until now . Paul Cook though has been promoted the last two seasons and did well at Chesterfield I believe

Personally as an outside punt, David Unsworth. Apparently making the correct noises with the Everton under 23's and more experience with younger players than Gerrard at present. With this in mind id be a bit nervous with Gerrard at present. Let him gain adequate knowledge with a good grounding at Liverpool, which I should imagine is a good place to learn your trade.

This has all the hallmarks of delaying tactics. My guess (and that is what it is) the club is being sold.

I would love Paul Cook as well but cannot see him coming South again. One of the reasons he left Portsmouth for Wigan was to get closer to home. My second choice would be Warburton as plays nice football although defensively suspect. Third choice would be Mowbray and Veno which would give the Club its identity back. Both good players for us and their partners both come from Ipswich. Only my opinion but too much of a risk to bring in the likes of Gerrard or Lampard in one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Lampard though does talk a lot of sense and he could bring Harry lol.

Holger Osieck or george burley seem to be the current favourites in my local..Ange Postecoglou has dropped back a bit...

Bluevein,I certainly don't think there is any delaying tactics going on.
The club are just taking as long as necessary to find the right man to take
the club forward.
Look what's happened to other clubs who have rushed into appointing someone
too quickly,ie Southampton,West Bromwich ,Stoke and Birmingham (prior to Monk)

Regardless of who gets the job the problem faced by McCarthy remains the same - no money to spend.

PaulC - I'm just wondering what 'similarity in circumstance' you see in Gerrard and Keane? Both were captains of club and country, but in terms of character and management experience they are poles apart. Keane had always been rude, abrasive and aggressive, Gerrard has never been any of those things. Plus he has had a year of learning his trade as a player under some of the best managers around, and as a coach under one of the very, very best managers in the world. Totally different from Keane and I don't really think there are obvious comparisons at all. Just my opinion!

The next appointment is crucial to both club and supporters,so I'm quite happy for Mr.Evans to consider all possible candidates.
I feel certain this time it will be the right appointment.🤔

Cannot understand the enthusiasm for Mowbray or Warburton, they've both failed in more than one position. Let's go for something new. Steven Gerrard's an interesting idea but seems very uninspiring to listen to.

Can I be very brave and very much expect a backlash. How about Alex Neil or possibly Paul lambert.
This is to help start a debate.
