Pompey Boss Jackett Linked With Town
Tuesday, 24th Apr 2018 10:06

Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett is the latest manager reported to be a contender for the vacant Town job.

According to the Daily Mirror, Jackett is among those being considered to replace Mick McCarthy.

The 56-year-old took charge at then-newly-promoted Pompey in the summer of 2017 and has taken them to eighth in League One, four points off the play-offs.

Former Wales international Jackett, who has previously managed Watford, where he spent his entire playing career, Swansea, Millwall, Wolves and briefly Rotherham, signed a new contract in November tying him to the Fratton Park club until the summer of 2021.

Wigan manager Paul Cook, Jackett’s predecessor at Portsmouth, is now the bookies’ favourite for the Town job at 4-1 with Bet Victor ahead of Lincoln’s Danny Cowley and Steven Gerrard at 5-1.

Tony Mowbray is the fourth favourite at 10-1 with Shrewsbury’s Paul Hurst at 14-1 ahead of Alan Pardew and Shefki Kuqi, who are both 16-1.

Meanwhile, Taiwan manager Gary White, 43, has said he'd be keen on the job. The former British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Shanghai Shenxin and Guam boss would appear a big outsider for the role.

........ another false alarm. Would be very surprised if any credence to this at all - on contract until 20121 - Why would he be interested anyway ?

Ugh please no.

Interesting to see Paul Cook become favourite. I'd be happy with that.

Be a safe and steady appointment. To be absolutely honest I have no idea what his style of football is as he's a manager who has completely passed me by.

'Signed a new contract in November tying him to the Fratton Park club until the summer of 2021.

Good let him stay there.

Still favour Cook - as I commented before the way he had Wigan playing against Southampton in the FA qrt. finals was exactly how i would like to see us play. They lost i accept but their passing and movement were excellent

Paul Cook please. His teams play football the ITFC way. His Portsmouth team played the best football in div 2 and his Wigan team have got promoted playing quality entertaining football. He developed Webster and can turn our club around. Get it done early Marcus.

Safe pair of hands but a sideways move...hardly going to sell season tickets is he?

Did the shock of that headline make you wet the bed again Timmy? 😂

Really are people expecting Cook and Mowbray to leave to come here, Wigan have been promoted and a good chance Blackburn will be too. Be surprised if either of them leave and probably will want to carry on the good work they have been doing.

@Northstandveteran - I changed my avatar for Gcon (yes I know) as he thought my name was more akin to a bed wetting mothers boy :)

Agree that Cook would be a great option but agree with TimmyH that it's unlikely that any manager in the Championship will want to come here considering how much money McCarthy was allowed to spend.

We aren't a very big draw for those managers. Our fans needs to be realistic about this. We aren't Bobby Robson's Ipswich anymore.

This is all paper talk and quite possibly all names mentioned are red herrings.Anyway in my opinion most of the names associated with becoming manager at Town would not be capable of moving us forward.
For me so far Paul Cook is the only one who has proved his pedigree with Portsmouth and the way Wigan have played this season.
It will be very interesting to see what Mr.aEvans says in the next coming days.🤔

I love how people vote down comments because they are realistic rather than pie in the sky wishes. If you don't agree state why rather than vote down.

I want Cook to come here, I just can't see why anyone thinks we're a bigger draw than Wigan.

I expect our next manager is probably on the betting list somewhere.
Marcus is not overly keen on paying compensation to a club.
When the season is over I'm waiting for a manager to announce that he's leaving his current club with mutual consent because he thinks he can't take them any further.
We then hire him.
Sorry about the cliches.

We're not a vastly bigger draw than Wigan but we have enough history of success and sticking with managers to make the job more attractive than some. I suspect that we have lost any aura of the Premier League, bringing on youngsters attractive football though.

I just don't think Cook or Mogga will leave they're present clubs for Ipswich as it would be a sideways step with a lot less money to spend. Hurst is certainly a possibility as Town are a step up from Shrewsbury. Personal choice along with others would be Cook but don't think it will happen. I think that the Steven Gerrard link is possibly one ME may consider as he would be well placed to attract good loan signings as I am sure there will be no more transfer money available. I just wish ME would at least narrow the list down a tad and say who is on his hit list.

I quite like Gary White who is at Taiwan. His record in the far east and other areas are very good.

Why do people think that managers at other clubs are queuing up to come here.
Lets face it if you were cook or Mowbray who have just come up with bigger clubs than here WHY would you change,???? even mcgreal at Colchester has a better job,
No evans will do his normal and bring an old has been here who the fans don't want. His way of running a club that last played Ipswich football under JIM.
