Pompey Boss Jackett Linked With Town
Tuesday, 24th Apr 2018 10:06

Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett is the latest manager reported to be a contender for the vacant Town job.

According to the Daily Mirror, Jackett is among those being considered to replace Mick McCarthy.

The 56-year-old took charge at then-newly-promoted Pompey in the summer of 2017 and has taken them to eighth in League One, four points off the play-offs.

Former Wales international Jackett, who has previously managed Watford, where he spent his entire playing career, Swansea, Millwall, Wolves and briefly Rotherham, signed a new contract in November tying him to the Fratton Park club until the summer of 2021.

Wigan manager Paul Cook, Jackett’s predecessor at Portsmouth, is now the bookies’ favourite for the Town job at 4-1 with Bet Victor ahead of Lincoln’s Danny Cowley and Steven Gerrard at 5-1.

Tony Mowbray is the fourth favourite at 10-1 with Shrewsbury’s Paul Hurst at 14-1 ahead of Alan Pardew and Shefki Kuqi, who are both 16-1.

Meanwhile, Taiwan manager Gary White, 43, has said he'd be keen on the job. The former British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Shanghai Shenxin and Guam boss would appear a big outsider for the role.

Not sure Cook would leave Wigan, but you never know.

Naa voted you down because you didnt say which Robsons Ipswich, when he joined or when he left. When he joined he was 5th choice. So we hardly had pulling power back then either!

No thanks! My favorite at this moment in time would be Cook. Although he's doing extremely well at Wigan they do not attract much of a football crowd up there so I'm sure Cook could be persuaded to come. He done a fantastic job at Portsmouth before Wigan as well and his teams play good football and one of very few teams to have masterminded a win over Manchester City this season.
My heart would love Mowbray but with the money he's had and players he's been able to bring in to Blackburn I think he should be able to finish top two in that division so I'm just unsure on him.

Are you saying Wigan are a bigger club than Ipswich?
Heck when some were moaning at how low our crowds were in the season, take a look at how many come through the gates at Wigan who are top of the table?

Speculation from a tired journo(I hope!!!!!!) with some of the names they bring up I think at 66 &3/4 I will find an agent and put my CV in I did with some success manage a youth team in 1979!!!! so come on Marcus let me enjoy my retirement and pick the right man.

Just to clarify as a club/name/stadium/history we're a bigger 'draw' than both Blackburn and Wigan but the problem is Mowbray and Cook will have that momentum coming up after being promoted and I can't see neither leaving when the going is good and confidence and expectations both positive. Whilst here it's another kettle of fish...

White can talk the talk, but can he walk the walk in English football? I'm not so sure!.....massively important Evans gets this next appointment right! It shouldn't be overlooked Evans got the 'right man' in McCarthy considering our circumstances at that particular time! I shall remain cautiously optimistic !

I mentioned Jackett as exactly the sort of deeply uninspiring appointment that a stagnant, listless club like ours would make a couple of weeks ago on the Forum. I hope I am wrong!

No thanks.Thought he was at MIllwall for a time in the past, and never 'pulled up any trees'that I can recall. If Paul Cook had stayed then they would be in play offs, and probably in automatic spot;if what he has done at Wigan is anything t go by.

Bookies odds reflect money being put on by punters.Shouldn't be those closely aligned with football as illegal;so not putting too much faith in odds table.

I would put him in similar category to Pardew and the pseudo Dutchman McLaren plus Shefki, and the

others currently out of work.

As haven't a clue like most (except Mr Milne lol) who we are likely to get.KNow more who I don't want than who I would prefer;but still fancy the real Dutchman, although doesn't appear above.

In light of ME's trailed remarks ahead of tomorrow's full transcript I'd say:
a) Don't expect a Big Time Charlie anytime soon
B) Don't expect an 'around the block' bore anytime soon either.

DO expect a) foreign, b) young, or c) both!

Why would Paul cook take job?
From up north, has got Wigan into championship and probably has more funds available to strengthen

ME has now stated they will do something different...that rules out all on the betting list except Gerrard and White..

Be nice to have a totally fresh outlook on football than the old guard of failed and traditional type contenders mentioned thus far.

We want someone who can coach players..we won't be spending much dough so want someone who can squeeze everything out of our existing playing staff and motivate both young and not so young players....

I don't think Mick was on poor salary. Probably one of the best in the division. If Cook or any decent manager are coming the salary is so important

My 33 years old son is the Assistant Manager of Wan Chi Spartans who are an amateur team of Ex-Pats in Hong Kong. He was Player Assistant Manager until suffering a nasty knee injury at Xmas and now has more time to concentrate on the Management side of football. My question is......."When will the story break that he will be in Ipswich in June?" Ok he is attending his brother's wedding but he will be happy to free up half an hour for an interview!
