Hurst: Town Link a Compliment
Thursday, 3rd May 2018 18:52

Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst says it’s “a compliment” to be linked with the vacancy at Town but says there has been no contact from the Blues. However, the former Grimsby manager offered no guarantee that he would be with League One’s third-placed side next season.

"I'm not going to sit here and say it's not nice to be linked with jobs, because it means you're doing something right," the 43-year-old, the current favourite for the Blues job, told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"All I will do is assure people that my focus is very much on trying to be successful and get this club promoted.”

The long-serving Rotherham left-back added: "It's just a compliment to everyone here and the season that we've had."

Hurst says there has been no contact from Town but when asked whether he could give Shrews fans an assurance he would still be at the Montgomery Waters Meadow next season, he responded: "I can't honestly answer that - it would be wrong for me to sit here and say that. I don't know what's going to happen between now and then.

"All I can honestly say is that I enjoy it here, I've got a good relationship with pretty much everyone at the football club and I want to try and take this club to the Championship.”

Hurst, whose side are guaranteed third and a play-off place, remains the bookies’ favourite to take charge at Town at 2-1 with Bet Victor ahead of former Sunderland and Wales boss Chris Coleman and Shefki Kuqi at 10-1.

Wigan manager Paul Cook is at 12-1, then Tony Mowbray and Frank Lampard at 16-1 and Mark Warburton and Scott Parker at 20-1.

Meanwhile, contrary to reports elsewhere, we understand there has been no contact between the Blues and former coach and skipper Mowbray, who has just led Blackburn Rovers back to the Championship.

However, the man known as Mogga returning to Portman Road looks increasingly unlikely given his success at Ewood Park.

Elsewhere, Lampard, who has been linked with the Blues, has said he’s looking to take his first step into management.

“I’m doing my coaching badges at the moment. I've spent a lot of time at Chelsea this year, gaining hours of experience," he said.

"I've already managed to get my A Licence in coaching. So yes, with the right opportunity and right timing for me, I'd really take a very close look at it.”

Lampard's former England team-mate Steven Gerrard, who is understood to have spoken with Town, appears all but certain to be taking the reins at Rangers.

The Glasgow club are reportedly confident a deal is close to being agreed with the Liverpool legend.

Elsewhere, TWTD understands Notts County boss Kevin Nolan is among the numerous potential candidates whose name has been put forward to Town owner Marcus Evans.

Ex-Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham man Nolan, 35, took over at Notts County, who are fifth in League Two, in January 2017 having previously had a short spell in charge at Leyton Orient.

The former England U21 international would appear to be a big outside for the job.

Meanwhile skipper Luke Chambers says he's looking forward to working with the new boss, whoever ultimately takes charge.

“There seems to be a lot of excitement amongst the supporters at the moment,” the currently-injured Chambers writes in Sunday's match programme.

“Hopefully that can put us in a good place and we can start the new season on a high.

“There will be a new manager coming in and that means a new challenge for us all but it’s one I’m personally looking forward to and the lads in the dressing room will be as well.

“I’m interested in seeing how a new manager will work, to get to know them and their way of going about getting this club where we all want it to be.

“Ipswich Town is in my heart and I’ll do anything I can to help us move in the right direction.”

Come on Paul - join us - I think it'd work well for both parties...

Maybe there is good reason for him being favourite. Certainly makes sense of the end of May appointment after the play offs.
I don't think there would be too many complaints if Hurst became our manager.

Would be an excellent appointment in my opinion.

I think it may well depend upon the results of the play offs. He is my preferred choice but I would not be too upset if Lampard joins us. All the great managers started somewhere so why not Lampard and why not here?

Chris Coleman joint second favourite! - really?... as mentioned above if Shrewsbury get to the Championship will he really want to leave (put Mowbray and Cook in that boat as well).

With Gerrard looking a good bet for the Gers, and them Cowley bros signing a new contract, which in all honesty ain't a bad thing as their possession stats over last few weeks has been averaging around 50%, which does suggest (for a successful team) a more direct style, I'm casting the net a wee bit wider now. I'd roll with Hurst, ticks the young up and coming manager box so why not give him a try. We are a far better proposition than the ‘Shrews' even if they were to gain promotion I suspect it would not be a show stopper, besides he's clearly throwing his hat in the mix.

Hurst certainly seems to tick all the boxes, and would join us with a track record of success and no management failures on his CV. I don't want us taking a punt on someone with little or no management experience like some recently retired ex-players linked, but Hurst is on the way up and could be the perfect fit for ITFC.

The thing is despite all the hysteria regarding MM leaving we are actually perfect for someone looking to make the next step up. We have a pretty tight knit squad of seemingly good characters. All us fans crave is a bit of excitement!

Now go and get him Marcus, perfect candidate and exactly what we need to go forward.

Have to admit I'm more bothered about type of manager & don't know too much about Paul but he is the type I think we need.
By that I mean young and upcoming with new ideas and positive attitude. I don't profess to knowing much about a few of the candidates but whoever it is needs to change the feel around the club.

Paul Hurst is 100% the man for Ipswich Town, a special bread of manager, one who integrates 100% from his players as well as the ethos of trying to play the game in the right way. Read reports as well a fantastic man manager as well. Certainly seems like an Ipswich Town fit to me.

I'm a little worried that all the decent names in the frame are saying " Town haven't made contact" I was under the impression that interviews started this week?? I know the season isn't over and some of these names still have promotion/play offs let BUT at least make contact to show we're interested!!!

SaigonTractor added 06:30 - May 4
I think this all depends on whether Shrewsbury win the playoffs.

And the reason there hasn't been any contact is because he's focused on the playoffs. Plus I doubt he'd tell anyone if Ipswich had made contact. It'd unsettle the players and the fans during one of the most important times in their recent history.

Paul Cook would be my first choice, although Paul Hurst may also fit the remit.

Wouldn't also be be opposed to Lampard or Steign if we are keen to move in a different direction.

All good fun at the moment, particularly after the MM saga which depressed us all.

Cook is said to be on a shortlist of four (TeamTalk) for the Sunderland job, so we could well miss out. Maybe we need to be moving a bit faster than we are now.

Trac70 It would be very unprofessional of Town to contact Hurst while he is still trying to get his team promoted. He might even end up resenting Marcus if he unsettled the team. It's not rush to make an appointment. If Hurst is the top target, we should just wait until their season has ended, then make a move.

Anyone saying anything negative about Kevin Nolan, whose done a cracking job this season yet suggesting we try untested people like Gerrard / Lampard / Parker - go see a bloody doctor and get a diagnosis...........
