Sherwood in Contention for Town Job
Monday, 7th May 2018 14:15

TWTD understands former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood is a serious contender for the vacant Town manager’s job.

Blues owner Marcus Evans began interviewing candidates to succeed Mick McCarthy last week with Sherwood among them, but doesn’t expect to name his new boss until late May or early June.

Sherwood’s most recent job was as director of football at Swindon between November 2016 and June 2017.

Prior to that he was manager of Villa from February 2015 to the October of the same year, during which they reached the FA Cup final but were beaten 4-0 at Wembley by Arsenal.

The three-times-capped full England international’s first job as a boss was at Tottenham between December 2013 and May 2014 having previously been a member of the White Hart Lane backroom staff.

The 49-year-old, who played for Spurs between 1999 and 2003, had initially been assistant first-team coach under Harry Redknapp before becoming their technical director, during which time he ran their U21s side.

In addition to his link to Redknapp, one of Evans’s long-standing contacts in the game, Sherwood will also be well-known to David Pleat, another of the Blues’ owner’s associates, while Town caretaker-boss Bryan Klug was working at the Spurs academy during the Borehamwood-born former midfielder's spell coaching at White Hart Lane.

Sherwood emerging as a leading candidate for the Blues job is unlikely to prove universally popular with Town supporters given his playing history with Norwich City.

He made 82 starts and six sub appearances for the Canaries, scoring 13 times, between July 1989 and February 1992.

Sherwood, who also played for Watford, Blackburn, with whom he won a Premier League winner's medal, Portsmouth and Coventry during his playing career, is currently ranked as a 33-1 outsider for the Town job with Bet Victor. More on the latest betting here.

Sherwood would not be that bad. I think there have been others linked that are far worse than him.
I think he was harshly treated at both Spurs and Villa. Their owners were never going to stick with him.
My favourite appointment would be the Burley/Butcher combination although I am possibly leading with my heart instead of head.

No, no, no. Surely ME can't be that stupid. A serial failure wherever he's been

If he's not good enough for HarryfromBath he's not good enough for me!

Certainly wouldn't be a popular choice. Can't say he would be someone I'd want here either. Norwich connexpction is a big deal for most.

ME needs to get some new friends and advisors...

The fact he played for Norwich shouldn't make any difference. The fact that he is not a good manager should! That said, if he's appointed, then I will support him, as I will whoever it is but I really hope we get someone else

I assume Phil's let the sun get to him. We need to liberate Gav from the basement and enthrone him as king of TWTD for a bit.

If Marcus is as in tune with the fans as his recent interview would like us to believe, I would hope he'd appreciate this is not an appointment that will go down well.

I personally couldn't give a damn about the Norwich connection. I think this guy is too much of a self-inflating media magnet who moaned about not getting the transfer targets he wanted at Villa and made some very dodgy tactical decisions during his tenure there too. Not one for me.

I would not be happy with Sherwood as manager for a lot of the reasons given above but it is totally childish to say no because of the Norwich connection.

I'd be ok with that appointment.
He's worked with klug before and I think that's the way forward for the club.with a strong link between academy and 1st team

I know a Swindon fan. When I tell him he will laugh his head off. They hate him there - a true egotistical idiot. Luckily I think his chances of getting the Town job are almost zero

I would rather boil my own head than have TS in charge at town.

12th Man - you make some sound valid points to which I agree. Yes the ego needs sorting, but from an ‘Entertaining' brand of football point of view I could think of far worse.

not bothered about the Narridge connection, but really wouldn't be dancing in the street if he got the job, hopefully he is just another name in the wannabe hat nothing more.ME shocked us all with Keane, dont see this one happening though . Hope we get this sorted out soon ,

Record at Tottenham and Villa were both fairly poor and even when director of football at Swindon they were then relegated...so on the basis of that it's definitely a no.

Be nice to have a mouth watering candidate come up with these links even though it would be a long shot..

Sherwood can't see the wood for the trees with this one.
