Sherwood in Contention for Town Job
Monday, 7th May 2018 14:15

TWTD understands former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood is a serious contender for the vacant Town manager’s job.

Blues owner Marcus Evans began interviewing candidates to succeed Mick McCarthy last week with Sherwood among them, but doesn’t expect to name his new boss until late May or early June.

Sherwood’s most recent job was as director of football at Swindon between November 2016 and June 2017.

Prior to that he was manager of Villa from February 2015 to the October of the same year, during which they reached the FA Cup final but were beaten 4-0 at Wembley by Arsenal.

The three-times-capped full England international’s first job as a boss was at Tottenham between December 2013 and May 2014 having previously been a member of the White Hart Lane backroom staff.

The 49-year-old, who played for Spurs between 1999 and 2003, had initially been assistant first-team coach under Harry Redknapp before becoming their technical director, during which time he ran their U21s side.

In addition to his link to Redknapp, one of Evans’s long-standing contacts in the game, Sherwood will also be well-known to David Pleat, another of the Blues’ owner’s associates, while Town caretaker-boss Bryan Klug was working at the Spurs academy during the Borehamwood-born former midfielder's spell coaching at White Hart Lane.

Sherwood emerging as a leading candidate for the Blues job is unlikely to prove universally popular with Town supporters given his playing history with Norwich City.

He made 82 starts and six sub appearances for the Canaries, scoring 13 times, between July 1989 and February 1992.

Sherwood, who also played for Watford, Blackburn, with whom he won a Premier League winner's medal, Portsmouth and Coventry during his playing career, is currently ranked as a 33-1 outsider for the Town job with Bet Victor. More on the latest betting here.

I worry Marcus is only using connections and friends HE knows, I personally think it's time we pick someone who loves this club, passion and stle of football are everything to the fans. It's George and Terry for me so far. I still would give Klug a year if he were interested.

No thank you, wouldn't even be in my top 10!

I thought i picked up on that too Harry! I'm in agreement with the consensus. Bit of a hothead, and a touch arrogant (which is ok if you've got something to be arrogant about!). On the plus side, would probably get us playing a pleasing style of football, but minuses outway pluses for me.

What does he bring to the party?

He has a record of failure and no experience of the Championship.

No thanks. He wouldn't be at the bottom of my list but he's definitely not near the top. Paul Hurst or Burley+Butcher any day over Sherwood. I don't want a Keane and McCarthy with an ego the size of Belgium at the helm. We've been there and done that and it didn't work (twice).

He can't work without money, so that and the ex-scum stuff blows him out the water like an exocet missile on a pedalo.

I'd rather Chris Hogg with Burley as DOF

No way can't stand the bloke, think he's an arrogant txxt.
Give me Burley, Butcher any day if the week.

I couldn't be more underwhelmed and I'm consoling myself with the thought that this will never happen... I hope. We'd be flooded with ”arrys” dodgy agents mercenary players and he'll add an extension to his sandbanks mansion

Remember we have a duty to interview candidates across other backgrounds. One from a black or ethnic minority and one from a smug, arrogant background. This is just box ticking.

I thought ME said he was going to try something different. To me Sherwood is not something different.

To me doing something different would be to employ Frank Lampard with someone like Harry as a Director of Football. If not Harry then I would not be bothered if Burley got that position

Have a friend who is a Swindon Town season ticket holder. Apparently he is an A1 one.

I would like to say I would love Tim Sherwood to be our next manager, but my mum told me I mustn't tell lies! Connection with Norwich & Spurs does not help his cause, failed in every managerial position he has held puts the final nail in his coffin.

He would not be my first choice but is his track record any worse than Burley and Butcher? How many times have those two failed. Sherwood plays football not hoofball but my choice would still be Cook or Hurst
