Sherwood in Contention for Town Job
Monday, 7th May 2018 14:15

TWTD understands former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood is a serious contender for the vacant Town manager’s job.

Blues owner Marcus Evans began interviewing candidates to succeed Mick McCarthy last week with Sherwood among them, but doesn’t expect to name his new boss until late May or early June.

Sherwood’s most recent job was as director of football at Swindon between November 2016 and June 2017.

Prior to that he was manager of Villa from February 2015 to the October of the same year, during which they reached the FA Cup final but were beaten 4-0 at Wembley by Arsenal.

The three-times-capped full England international’s first job as a boss was at Tottenham between December 2013 and May 2014 having previously been a member of the White Hart Lane backroom staff.

The 49-year-old, who played for Spurs between 1999 and 2003, had initially been assistant first-team coach under Harry Redknapp before becoming their technical director, during which time he ran their U21s side.

In addition to his link to Redknapp, one of Evans’s long-standing contacts in the game, Sherwood will also be well-known to David Pleat, another of the Blues’ owner’s associates, while Town caretaker-boss Bryan Klug was working at the Spurs academy during the Borehamwood-born former midfielder's spell coaching at White Hart Lane.

Sherwood emerging as a leading candidate for the Blues job is unlikely to prove universally popular with Town supporters given his playing history with Norwich City.

He made 82 starts and six sub appearances for the Canaries, scoring 13 times, between July 1989 and February 1992.

Sherwood, who also played for Watford, Blackburn, with whom he won a Premier League winner's medal, Portsmouth and Coventry during his playing career, is currently ranked as a 33-1 outsider for the Town job with Bet Victor. More on the latest betting here.

A lot of encouraging repair work has been undertaken in the last few weeks and now is the time to build on it. Marcus, you are being watched very carefully and the wrong choice will undermine the current status of the recovery. Rid yourself of the 'flash Harry' relationship and if you have to resort to advice before making your choice, please take it from someone who can be genuinely relied upon and not someone who appears to have a self interest in promoting those who are closely connected with him, Frank Lampard aside!

...... It's obvious that whoever is appointed won't please everyone - so just let it happen and get behind the Club, Evans, and whoever the new Manager is. Everyone has their own opinion, but that will have no bearing on the decision Evans makes.
I am sure that Evans will want to appoint the right person this time round.

Cannot believe that there are so many critics of whoever is mentioned as a possibility.

As I've stated previously - to add to what we already successfully have at the Club - the Burley / Butcher combination would tick all the boxes for me.
Whoever it is - let's give the person our full backing, and give him a chance.
I didn't want either Jewell or McCarthy - both turned out the way I predicted, and expected - but I would have been happy for either of them to have proved me wrong.

This will not be an easy thing for Evans or the new Manager to please everyone - therefore let's not make it harder for either of them.

....... forget Cook - no chance. Hurst would be another huge gamble, if he failed people would say he wasn't experienced enough to appoint in the first place. After all, he is still a 'rookie' in terms of Management, however that doesn't mean of course that with time, he couldn't, and wouldn't, go to the very top.

Let's not knock the Club now - the Dinosaur has left the room, and we should all be grateful for that.

GET BEHIND THE CLUB NOW - AND WHATEVER DECISION IS MADE IN TERMS OF AN APPOINTMENT.

TOGETHERNESS - is the way forward.

If I was Evans, and read this lot on here. I think I would be more inclined to remove myself from the Club at the soonest opportunity. In fact I would be quite pi--ed off with some of the individual views / comments. On a hiding to nothing, or what ?

GET A GRIP PEOPLE - you're only serving to potentially destroy what has very much returned with our Club.

Why should anyone be so concerned about any candidate having a Norwich connection ? - I personally have no feeling for that Club at all, and it wouldn't even come into my thoughts.

Not as if we need to see ourselves living in their shadow - in fact quite the opposite. We have far less problems than what they have at the moment, so be thankful for where we are, and what we've got.

COME ON YOU BLUES.

TBH I'd take him but only if he is going to get backed financially by Evans which is an obvious doubt.

He did great at Spurs & got Villa to a cup final. He is young and ambitious with his own ideas. As previously stated I think the type of manager and the support they get from the owner is the biggest issue.

Couldn't care less re the tenuous NCFC link. So what? It's not like we are asking Huckerby to be the next boss. Some fans would have us think anyone who has stayed overnight in Norwich shouldn't be considered.

Getting the right one he task for the board. Confident they can do that? Me neither but tbh Sherwood wouldn't be the worst choice in my view.

If Evans hires him it will prove that he knows absolutely nothing about football. Awful record and no different than our previous manager tactically.

1. Look at what he did at Villa - Sweet FA
2. Look at the target for the role - Spend 0, develop youth
3. Jog on

I'd rather have Frank Lampard. At least he looks like a football manager.

Tim looks like he spends more time working out what he's wearing on the touchline than picking the team.

You are certainly right there Harry,no one wants him.

As well as consulting with his golf buddies etc, would do well to read comments on this website, to find out who we DON'T want, including this chap who .I recall has a rather abrasive attitude, and thinks he is better than he is.Has had no success in management either.
Worried that Marcus is giving him an interview as had no success at all .

we're gonna pinch pennies & give it to Nash & Hogg... Can't see evans paying compensation for an existing manager & sure even he isn't stupid enough to take one of the merry go round. Not that it would be a bad move as both know what ipswich need..Have proved that alongside Klug who in the new set up would be director of football.

ME needs to take into account longevity here. Imagine the two following scenarios
* Burley and Butcher get the job. Five games into the season we have a point.
*Sherwood and Wilkins get the job. Five games into the season we have a point.

I believe fans would stick more with Burley/Butcher than Sherwood/Wilkins if things started to go south for us. "Give them time" would most likely be the consensus for scenario 1. I'm not certain the same could be said of scenario 2.

Big NO from me....

I'd think some of the potential candidates for Rangers (Ange Postecoglou etc...) would now also be in the running. Huge pool available plus bound to be some managers leaving before the end of the season.

Becarefulwhatuwish4... change the record! Did you go on Sunday and feel the difference around the place? and what has exactly happened? absolutely nothing other than lots of people being linked with the vacancy for the position at ITFC. I bet you will be pleased with everything that goes wrong so you can say "be careful what you wish for"..

Reference Sherwood, massive no thanks from me.

Reading the above Mr Evans I think you should take it as a big fat Nooooooooo, for me even at 49 Sherwood is past it and devoid of ideas in the modern game.

If Marcus Evans wants to get the fans back onside, and the gates improving, he needs to restore the 'soul' to the club and that, in my view, means appointing the Burley/Butcher team. Their Ipswich pedigree is proven. The last time I truly enjoyed watching Town on a consistent basis, and could really empathise with the team, was when George was in charge. He put together a successful side with (possibly apart from Marcus Stewart) no superstars, yet they did the business and played attractive football.

Chalky from Cheltenham
