Sherwood in Contention for Town Job
Monday, 7th May 2018 14:15

TWTD understands former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood is a serious contender for the vacant Town manager’s job.

Blues owner Marcus Evans began interviewing candidates to succeed Mick McCarthy last week with Sherwood among them, but doesn’t expect to name his new boss until late May or early June.

Sherwood’s most recent job was as director of football at Swindon between November 2016 and June 2017.

Prior to that he was manager of Villa from February 2015 to the October of the same year, during which they reached the FA Cup final but were beaten 4-0 at Wembley by Arsenal.

The three-times-capped full England international’s first job as a boss was at Tottenham between December 2013 and May 2014 having previously been a member of the White Hart Lane backroom staff.

The 49-year-old, who played for Spurs between 1999 and 2003, had initially been assistant first-team coach under Harry Redknapp before becoming their technical director, during which time he ran their U21s side.

In addition to his link to Redknapp, one of Evans’s long-standing contacts in the game, Sherwood will also be well-known to David Pleat, another of the Blues’ owner’s associates, while Town caretaker-boss Bryan Klug was working at the Spurs academy during the Borehamwood-born former midfielder's spell coaching at White Hart Lane.

Sherwood emerging as a leading candidate for the Blues job is unlikely to prove universally popular with Town supporters given his playing history with Norwich City.

He made 82 starts and six sub appearances for the Canaries, scoring 13 times, between July 1989 and February 1992.

Sherwood, who also played for Watford, Blackburn, with whom he won a Premier League winner's medal, Portsmouth and Coventry during his playing career, is currently ranked as a 33-1 outsider for the Town job with Bet Victor. More on the latest betting here.

Sherwood's only qualification is that he's Redknapp's mate.

And in my book, that's enough to disqualify him.

Well that would be the quickest DD sign up and cancellation on records then.

He's not managed for a while now so it's quite obvious nobody is keen on him and I'm sure he must have applied for other jobs.Without disrespect to the man we need somebody who is in the game, has the passion to bring on the youth at the club and wants to prove himself at a higher level.
I just wish Harry R was not mentioned with every name becoming associated with the club.I'm sure this will continue for weeks 🙉

This has to be the David Pleat effect again don't you think? Marcus, please delete David's number from your phone. There's a whole world of managers out there, we don't need a Tottenham cast off.

Do you think this is how Marcus Evans will select a manager?
Put a name out there and see how people respond.
Wouldn't surprise me.

About time some people realised that we are not Barca' - therefore do not call all the shots, that perhaps we once did.

Therefore a dose of reality, and common sense thinking wouldn't go amiss.
Optimism is one thing (commended) - reality sometimes another.

Can't believe a so called 'togetherness' Club, which many are are 'agreeing we are once again' ... ? - are already talking of cancelling DD's depending on who's appointed. THIS IS WORRYING --- like it or not, because we are not going to get Portman Road rocking again with that attitude.

If you are a genuine IPSWICH TOWN SUPPORTER - get behind the Club whoever is appointed - after all, how many Championship Club Owners / Managers are there amongst you ... ??

All I am saying is - give togetherness, and peace a chance. And the new Manager.

@ blueboy1981 wouldn't you prefer a different manager than Sherwood though? I think the one saying about cancelling the direct debit was perhaps just joking, that's the way I took it but not 100%, hopefully it was a joke but it's easy to misinterpret written messages, I certainly have before. I feel more optimistic about our future but Marcus Evans has got previous with his past appointments, hopefully he has learned as we don't want another divisive character like Keane or Mick. I honestly think we need somebody that will unite the fans just like BK just managed to do. Personally I'd go with Burley although my dark horse would be Gary White. I'm not totally averse to some of the younger managers that have been mentioned either. But honestly, Tim Sherwood doesn't get me excited at all. Norwich might be looking for a new manager soon, let them have him! :-)

Who would your no. 1 choice be Blueboy1981? Burley perhaps?

midastouch added 12:59 - May 8
And that's got nothing to do with him being an old Norwich player either, I just don't rate him as a manager. Not one what he's shown so far, he looked out of his depth at Spurs and Villa.

I also think Sherwood would come in with a lot less goodwill and therefore wouldn't be given the extended honeymoon to get things right like a Burley might. The new manager is going to need a certain amount of patience I expect and I don't the Town fans would extend as much patience to a Sherwood as they might Burley. I know patience with any man is not infinite but with Sherwood I fear it would be in short supply.

Blueboy - the complete hypocrite.
You cancelled your season ticket because you didn't like the last manager, and tried your best to get everybody to follow. And now you are beating anybody that might be considering a similar move? For real?

Gcon ........ same old from you.

Still call yourself a REAL Supporter I suppose ? - along with your 'small' crowd - who of course will be marking you 'up' already for your comment.

Another false claim from you to add to the many - I won't elaborate, you know what I mean .... !!

When does your 'small' group stop the mourning process ? - having seen your messiah move on.

Sad days for you obvious ones - absolute euphoria for the rest of us.

midastouch ............ Burley / Butcher to compliment what we already have - would see us hit the ground running next season.

midastouch ........... agree with your views - but don't you think that with the totally contrasting views on here as to whom the new Manager should be, that whoever he is, has an impossible task of uniting, and pleasing everyone. Your idea is GREAT - but evidence on here, that whatever happens the division of supporters will continue - now that is NOT good news for the resurrection of our Club.

Far too many 'one liners' on here - who couldn't put a deliver, or present, a constructive post if they tried.
But they call themselves - real Supporters ?? ......... REALLY ????

We have the best opportunity we have had for some considerable time, with what's going on down the other end of the A140 - to really leave them standing .... !! FACT - we hold the Aces right now.

Let's hope the opportunity isn't wasted by us, by people continually mourning/ wingeing at the outward journey of their messiah.
