Parker Among Interviewees
Thursday, 10th May 2018 18:25

TWTD understands former England international midfielder Scott Parker was among those to be interviewed by Blues owner Marcus Evans earlier in the week.

The 37-year-old, who TWTD revealed was among those in the running to take over at Town a fortnight ago, is looking to make his first step into management having spent this season coaching Tottenham’s U18s after hanging up his boots following four campaigns at Fulham last summer.

Parker has long held ambitions to become a manager and he began working on his badges and coaching youngsters while he was at the height of his playing career, which saw him represent Charlton, Spurs, Newcastle and West Ham in addition to the Cottagers, as well as a short spell on loan at Norwich, and win 18 full caps.

As previously reported, Blues owner Marcus Evans began interviewing candidates last week and has continued to meet with prospective new Town bosses in the last few days.

The interview process will continue into next week when Evans is set to hold talks with St Mirren manager Jack Ross having been given permission to speak to the 41-year-old by his current club.

News of the Blues’ approach to St Mirren has seen Ross elevated to 2-1 odds-on favourite with Bet Victor ahead of Paul Hurst, 2-1 against, whose Shrewsbury side are in League One play-off action at Charlton this evening (Sky Sports Football 7.30pm).

Shefki Kuqi is at 10-1, Parker has moved up to 14-1 with Simon Grayson at 16-1, Tim Sherwood at 20-1 and then Danny Cowley, Frank Lampard, George Burley, John McGreal, Mark Warburton, Paul Cook and Tony Mowbray all at 25-1.

Elsewhere, Steve McClaren, an early link with the Town vacancy, is reportedly set to take over at QPR following Ian Holloway’s departure this afternoon.

Holloway, 55, was spoken to by the Blues as a potential alternative to first-choice Mick McCarthy when he was appointed in November 2012 but seems unlikely to be in the running this time around.

Another man with Fulham connections and very little management experience was given a chance by Ipswich. Thank was the late, great Sir Bobby Robson who came to Ipswich at the age of 36. I'm not saying Parker would be my first choice but let's not condemn anyone before they've even got the job.

Well I'm open minded about Parker myself!

Eddie Howe as an example started coaching from scratch at Bournemouth in 2008 and he didn't have the playing pedigree of Parker and he has been coaching for a season at spurs.

I'm happy with him being in the frame

Everyone will have their own views and opinions as to who the next manager will be. And not everyone will be happy with whom is ever appointed.

Marcus Evans has come out to say that it will be someone different to who we have had before.

He should have spoken to the fans way before now. However, this is the time where we need to all come together as one for our club and team we support.

Sir Bobby was 36 when he was appointed manager having been sacked at Fulham. All young managers start somewhere. Eddie Howe started his mangerial career at Bournemouth and look what he has done.

Bryan Klug is Ipswich through and through and will know Scott Parker from his days at Spurs and I am sure Marcus Evans has his ear.

Whoever is appointed, whether we agree or not, we all need to be pulling in the same direction for our club and team. And so long as we have a manager which isn't all about them, we will be going in the right direction.

Marcus Evans will have seen the impact of what Bryan Klug, Chris Hogg and Gerard Nash have had and will want to maintain that momentum and connection with the fans.

We pay all this money for newbie managers, has been managers and others I dare not categorise.

To start a debate, why can't we get a selection of the 70-80's squad together to “manage”and attract / bring through new talent.

Just a few picking the teams would be better than we've had for years.

It seems like overkill for ME to go interviewing every Tom, Dick & Harry (oh God, please not Harry) that has thrown his hat in the ring or got recommended having once briefly met David Pleat. Surely we should have a more sophisticated process in place whereby the club has identified maybe Paul Hurst, Jack Ross and/or the manager of Taipei as fitting the profile of what we're after & then quietly going about the business of due diligence before making an approach at the appropriate time. It has before a bit of a circus at this stage, with too many clowns in the frame.
To be fair to Parker, he strikes me as a credible manager of the future; I just think we need someone a bit further down that road for this appointment, due to the critical nature of the role right now.

Hope we get this sorted out soon. Many players are now being released by other clubs and we need the new manager to assess whether any of them might be good for Town.

Wouldn't be my worst choice by a long shot. Comes over as intelligent and thoughtful. It's just the lack of experience that is a concern. Hopefully, Marcus knows what he is doing and can get make a judgement based on criteria in the interviews that are maybe not obvious to the supporters. I wonder if Marcus is doing these interviews on his own, or whether he has a "panel" to help him.

Ollies mum lives in the same village as myself on the outskirts of Bath, when he next visits I will put him under house arrest to keep him away from Portman Road!!!!!! that aside if we go for someone like parker with little or no experience then have George Burley upstairs to give him some guidance also give Butch the job of communicating with the fans rather than Milne

No from me. No experience. Not at all what we are looking for. Can the club see no further than Spurs as well?

Presumably OUR U18 coach Alan Lee is also being interviewed then ?

No no and no. No experience and certainly not a calculated risk, huge risk. Never rated him as a player either.

This is twice he's been mentioned and the fact he played for Chelsea has not been mentioned.
Parker would be a complete unknown although I'm sure people within the game would have a better insight as to his potential than any of us. To an extent I'd prefer someone like this to Shefki as we could be hiring a genius.... but I doubt that.

With the very odd exception this club has not bought stars. This club has turned players into stars under good managers. We have good young players here who could become great with the right manager bringing them though and giving them games. This appointment is crucial. Ramsey, Robson, Lyall, Burley and Royal produced some great players from within the club and with shrewd purchases. Over the last ten years we have let player go and watch them become stars at other clubs. We still produce them so let's have a manager who will bring them through to benefit our team.

Just remember that a certain Bobby Robson had very little managerial experience when he came here, so maybe Scott Parker is not out of the question. I know nothing about Mr Ross and I don't think he has been as successful in Scotland as Alex Neill had been when Narwich signed him. He had a short honeymoon period and then bombed! This whole question is difficult and good candidates seem to be falling by the wayside. With The Shrews beating Charlton and looking good for Wembley their man will stay I would imagine. One thing for sure please, please please don't go for someone from the Managerial merry go round!! I reckon the Swansea Manager who is leaving at the end of the season will be subject to a post by the end of the week.

There will be no satisfying some. The knives will be out whether it be Mick McCarthy or Jose Mourinho. The latter wouldn't have a clue when it comes to managing without a gigantic budget.

Time will tell

Barnsley are welcome to Grayson; QPR are welcome to McClaren; Anyone but us is welcome to Holloway or Sherwood. I'll be happy with one of Hurst, Parker, Ross, Sir George Burley, and perhaps a couple more. Hopefully Marcus is now beginning to narrow down his list a bit.

Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 10:50 - May 11
PS: Could it be that Parker might bring along Sherwood as sidekick or vice-versa? I don't know how well they get on but it's a possibility I'm not wildly enthusiastic about either.

Rammo added 11:00 - May 11
Now I wouldn't be against him, he's always struck me as a player who studies the game rather than just playing (similar to Gerrard). It would be a bold appointment but you put an experienced person like Burley as DOF and it could work well!

Agree no experience but that doesn't mean that he may not be the next best thing. Dyche and Howe went from playing and successful in their first managerial posts and havent looked back since! You never know the tried and tested managers so far havent worked out for us why couldnt someone with no experience? Whoever I will be supporting them I just hope Evans does as well. Despite everyone saying Mick had no money he did sign over 80 players in 5 years with signing on fees so still had a fair bit of money. Id obviously like the owner to get a little more money out his pocket for the new guy but cant see that happening.
