Town Will Have to Wait on Hurst
Sunday, 13th May 2018 20:14

Town will have to wait if they want to make Paul Hurst their new manager with his Shrewsbury side having reached the League One play-off final.

The Shrews, already a goal in front from Thursday's first leg at the Valley, beat Charlton 1-0 at home in this afternoon’s second match to secure a place in the Wembley final on Sunday 27th May where they will play Rotherham, with whom Blues right-back Josh Emmanuel is on loan, or Scunthorpe.

The Millers and Iron drew 2-2 in the first leg at Glanford Park yesterday and meet again at the New York Stadium on Wednesday.

Hurst, who is currently the joint-favourite to take over at Town at 7-4 with Bet Victor alongside St Mirren’s Jack Ross, is believed to be high on Blues owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential new bosses but we understand formal contact is still to be made with the Shrews with their season still ongoing.

Evans has held interviews with a number of candidates - among them Tim Sherwood, Scott Parker and Jack Ross, who he will meet with for a second time in the week to come - over the last couple of weeks but will have to wait another fortnight before he can talk to Hurst.

Quizzed about links with Town 10 days ago, Hurst, whose side finished third in League One, said he was flattered.

"It's just a compliment to everyone here and the season that we've had,” the former Ilkeston, Boston and Grimsby manager said.

Asked whether he could offer Shrews fans an assurance he would still be at the Montgomery Waters Meadow next season, he said: "I can't honestly answer that - it would be wrong for me to sit here and say that. I don't know what's going to happen between now and then.”

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Blues right-back Dylan Crowe was an unused sub as the England U17s beat Norway 2-0 at the Pirelli Stadium, Burton this evening to secure their place in the European Championships semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Fortuna Dusseldorf won 3-2 at Nurnberg this afternoon to secure the 2. Bundesliga title having confirmed promotion a fortnight ago.

Hurst would hardly be up for talking to us going into the playoffs Smithy. Would be a big slap in the face to his current employers and would completely disrupt his team and undo all his and their hard work over the season.
Pretty sure this is why evans gave the time scale he did so he could speak to managers after all things are wrapped up for the season.

Yeh that's true but from what is being said Evans is already conducting 2nd interviews which is why I think Ross is number 1 target. Anyhow I am excited to find out I hope it is one of these 2 guys

The reason we should go nowhere near burley/butcher is simple. Their overall management recoemrd is awful. Takecaway the 1st 6 years here for burley and butchers spell at inverness, theyve both failed wherever theyve been. Culminating in them, as a pairing taking Scotland from the top 20 in the world down to around 149th. Since then butcher failed at Newport and burley was sacked within a couple of weeks from his last job. And yes, them both being out of the game fo so long is an issue.

Some say Burley and Butcher don't understand today's game. What's to understand? How to wrap arms around people rather than challenging them fairly? tugging shirts?faking injury to get others sent off? Pleading with the ref over every decision? Terry and George played when men were men, hard fair tackles, accepting decisions, getting up and getting on with the game when fouled.
Apart from those differences the game is still about creating chances and scoring goals at one end and preventing chances and goals at the other.

I would be happy with BURLEY and BUTCHER not quite sure why there is negative feeling about them in some quarters. The style of play both would support is clearly what everybody has being crying out for and just because they may not have managed recently, does not mean they are incapable of doing the job again and doing it well. The other thing is if they were appointed and succeeded, they would almost certainly stay for the long run. They are blue, through and through.

Re-HURST and ROSS, my preference would be for ROSS - seems to take the holisitic approach and is very focused and well driven; he has also succeeded well in an environment that would work well at PR. Downside to both of these managers is if they do succeed, they will almost certainly use us as a stepping stone to bigger and better things.....

Not that bothered by any of the other contenders, especially not the likes of PARDEW, SHERWOOD et al!!!!

Lightningboy and Smithy.Feel like you that other clubs could be interested in Jack Ross;but it would not be good practice to approach for Hurst whilst his team will be playing at Wembley later this month. It could go against us landing our man.

Marcus certainly now has a dilemma, does he wait and risk losing Ross,or take the Scotsman at the expense of possibly landing Hurst;and by doing so lose out on both of them ?

Glad I don't have to choose.

I've nothing against Hurst but personally i'm thinking a lot of people on here are going a bit OTT regards his ability at this level..many managers have taken clubs up into the champioship - then taken them straight back down again.

There's a world of difference between managing in League 1 where there are maybe 6 or 7 clubs vying for the top 2 and the championship where there are probably 18 vying for the top 6 - it's a much tougher league and you need someone with something special about them to really push on - i'm not seeing that in Hurst's personality (hey I could be totally wrong)..but I do see that in what i've seen and heard about Jack Ross.

Not quite sure why Evans seems to want to risk losing Ross whilst hanging around for Hurst - unless he thinks he's the cheaper option?

This could end very badly if he's not careful.

I'd be more than happy with Hurst or Ross, although they would probably just view Town as a stepping stone to help them move to an established Premiership club magic roundabout due to the lack of investment from the owner.

I really admire Burley's style of management, Ipswich should have stuck with him longer than they did as I believe he would have turned it around and he would have learned a lot from the experience too. A lot of managers stick with what they know and bring in players from previous clubs and work with the same backroom staff over and over again which ultimately fails and continues to fail. If I recall correctly, Burley always took a completely fresh approach with sides he managed. As long as his head's in the right place, I think he'd be a wise choice to bring back some good times to this great club again!! Leave Butcher out as I don't think that would work at all, Kuqi, Holland or Taricco would be better assistant managers in my opinion.

Hopefully Marcus will get his first choice manager(s) in and next season will be one to remember for the right reasons. COYB!
