Ross: There Has Been Communication Between the Clubs
Monday, 14th May 2018 14:49

St Mirren manager Jack Ross says he’s aware that there has been communication between the Blues and his club but insists his focus remains on building a Buddies squad for their return to the Scottish Premiership next season.

Ross held a press conference earlier today having been named the Ladbrokes Championship Manager of the Year after St Mirren won the division by 12 points.

The 41-year-old was first mentioned in connection with the Town vacancy a month ago with the Paisley club having granted the Blues permission to speak to him last week, when it’s believed he was interviewed by owner Marcus Evans with a second meeting between the two understood to be taking place this week.

Quizzed on the links with Town this morning Ross appear to play down suggestions he has already met with Evans.

"I think there has been communication between the clubs, but at the moment I don't know anything more than that," Ross told Sky Sports News.

“I think those that know me that I have spent most of my time since the season finished at our training ground trying to push on with our plans for next season.

“I understand that it goes with the territory and you can’t complain about it because it’s a lot better than nobody being interested in you.”

He added: "At the moment my work and my focus is very much on trying to build a squad that will be progressive here and until that changes it will remain the case.”

”This club has been great for me because it has offered me that chance to prove myself in the last 18 months and I want to try and get better. For as long as I'm here, hopefully, that will be the case."

Regarding the gong, he continued: “It's only really a reflection on how well the players and the staff do throughout the course of the season, as the manager you receive that individual accolade, but you only get that if your team is good and the staff is good.

”Reflecting back on the awards it's nice, I think it's something I'll look back on with a lot of pride.”

Ross remains the joint-favourite for the Blues job at 7-4 with Bet Victor alongside Shrewsbury’s Paul Hurst.

Scott Parker is behind them at 10-1 with Shefki Kuqi, followed by Danny Cowley, Frank Lampard, Paul Cook, Simon Grayson and Tim Sherwood all at 20-1.

I would be happy with either , but with regards to Paul Hurst, even if Shrewsbury are promoted, surely we are a better option for next year for him?

Judging by the number of hoops my good lady had to jump through to obtain a job in the last six months, it's quite customary if someone is short listed to have a second and sometimes third interview.
I agree with some of the comments on here that the time element waiting on Hurst could be detrimental, particularly if he gets Shrewsbury promoted and then has to make a decision. We'll have to assume that Marcus willl make the right call. Under different circumstances Hurst would edge it over Ross for me, but then if he has had a first interview and has been invited for a second, he must have been making the right noises to ME.

Whilst there maybe hasn't been contact with Shrewsbury you can bet yiur bottom dollar that a 'hypothetical' conversation will have happened between a rep from the club and his agent as to if he is at least open to the idea...... that's doesn't mean we dont risk missing both targets but I'd expect we have at least an understanding of Hurts feelings......

Equally if the club had over 100 applications there could be some curve balls out there still.

I mean yesterday the papers all had Alligeri leaving Juve, today he's only leaving if the sack him.

Early days still..... wait and see is all we can do

Agree with jas0999, I'd also take either of Hurst or Ross who tick the up and coming manager box. I doubt anyone on here would be disappointed with the Burley/Butcher combo (inc myself), but personally think that would be a step backwards.

How many more times do I have to read ‘Burley/Butcher' combo. Legends yes, out of the game waaay too long, yes. I keep mentioning in my posts that we now need to look forward. Not backwards. If that means either PH or JR, then great. Both get their teams to play it on the floor.

We must get this ex player stuff put away and forgotten about.

Rob ITFC, Hurst will be risking moving to a new club, which means settling down again and he seems happy at Shrewsbury. If he gets promoted, he may well want to stay for at the least the first season.
ITFC would still interest him, but probably not enough to leave.

In my opinion he is a better fit than anyof the usual suspects but I am far more excited about HURST...I think the difference between English league one and Scottish makes Hurst much more experienced.. he has moved every club he has been at forward unlike Ross... who's had a brilliant season but has had a less impressive managerial career..

Looks like the Burley Butcher thing won't be happening
Looks like Ross and Hurst then with Ross the one I expect to get the job

Happy with that

The longer Mr Evans can spin the process out, of course, the less he has to pay his manager in the current financial year. Follow the money.

Either would be a huge gamble to be honest - would they fit with what we already have at the Club ?

Don't forget BK (although he doesn't want the job himself) is probably more experienced, and capable than either of these - possibly at the level they have operated at BK could probably have achieved just as much, maybe more.

There is a huge risk of whoever we bring in (other than the Burley / Butcher combo' ) that we will upset the fantastic back up team of young Coaches etc; that we obviously have in place already.
Who knows beyond that ?

BUT, nothing ventured, nothing gained I suppose. I feel rather uneasy about the euphoria amongst some - let's hope it all works out for the best.

Not sure why the knocking of Scottish football? Scotland has produced some great managers, Fergie Burley naming a couple, look how well Alex Neil has done at Preston, did ok at Norwich as well! Whoever we get in is going to be a gamble, but anymore of gamble than Evan's previous appointments? i dont think so!

the bookies will keep feeding us names and prices, a two horse race is not what they want.We must sit on our hands and wait. I cant see other than these two being serious contenders now .

Agree with blueboy to a degree...I think a few are getting carried away with the 'young' element (Although I don't want to see an experienced merry go round type here). Ross although done well at St Mirren and Alloa will be going into a new league of competitivness in the Championship and as said do we know that much about his style of management on the pitch?...Hurst for me looks the better bet but still an element of a gamble and will he leave the Shrews if they get promoted?...

...... if we have to go down the 'young' Manager route - I have to say I would have preferred Stejn and the 'Dutch' connection, over either of the two being touted.

HOWEVER - the important thing is to get behind the Owner, and whoever he see's fit to appoint - that will be the key to helping whoever get's the job - and helping move the Club forward.

Let's not have pages of discontent - we've seen enough of that.

I would prefer Hurst of the two. Will be surprised if Shrewsbury dont quickly offer him an improved contract very soon.......

We will miss out on both. This needs sorting. Im not convinced by Ross. Hurst at least understands what a tight budget in English football requires. I think Ross would be out his depth, strange thing is, l have a feeling he knows it, reading between the lines.

I dont really care who the manager is as long as their ambition is promotion and to keep us in the prem league forever other than that i have no stipulation.
