Ross Not Willing or Able to Comment on Town
Tuesday, 15th May 2018 10:08

St Mirren boss Jack Ross kept his cards close to his chest when questioned about the Town management vacancy at his press conference having been named the Ladbrokes Championship Manager of the Year yesterday.

The 41-year-old spoke to Marcus Evans last week, the Buddies having given the Blues permission to hold talks, and is set to meet with the Town owner for a second time later this week.

“I have always tried to be frank and honest but that [the Town job] is something I am not willing or able to comment on at the moment,” Ross, who also spoke to Sky Sports News, at yesterday’s media get-together, is quoted by the Daily Record as having said when asked about the situation.

“There is always a danger in football that people take it as a sign of disloyalty or that you are not doing your job properly.

“Those who know me will know I have spent every day at Ralston [the St Mirren training ground] since the season finished trying to make sure we are in as good a place as we can be for next season. As things stand that is where I will be next season.

“The club is waiting to have communication with them [Town]. I have always been relaxed about it simply because I enjoy this job so much.

“I am excited about the fact we have a Premiership season to look forward to. That excites me as a manager because it gives me that freshness.

“The pathway to England is one players and managers want to take because of the huge resources available down there — but I am a big advocate of the game up here.

“The recent attention and profile the Scottish game has received through the likes of Steven Gerrard’s appointment at Rangers as well as the Hibs v Rangers game at the weekend [which ended 5-5] highlights the fact there are good things happening up here.

“There are good players and managers operating in Scotland and we should embrace that more.

“I’ve never had preconceived ideas about how I would want my career to go other than the fact I would like to be Scotland manager one day.

“That’s romantic for me. I always wanted to play for Scotland when I was a young boy. Now you hear young boys saying they want to play in the English Premier League.

“For me, the ultimate as a manager would be to manage my country. But beyond that it has only ever been about doing the job I’m in to the best I can.”

Ross, who was also named PFA Scotland's Manager of the Year, is now the 11-8 odds-on favourite with Bet Victor to take over at Town having moved ahead of Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst, who remains at 2-1, the pair having previously been joint-favourites.

Scott Parker is at 12-1, Tim Sherwood 14-1, Shefki Kuqi 16-1, Simon Grayson 20-1 and Paul Cook, George Burley, John McGreal, Mark Warburton and Tony Mowbray all at 25-1.

It's gonna be Ross or Hurst almost certainly now.

I think he wants the job a lot more than he's letting on. He's just being respectful to his current employers and fans in case he doesn't get the job and there's nothing wrong with that. I do like this guy and would be happy enough if we appointed him, but my first choice would still be Paul Hurst.

Basically, he hasnt been offered the job yet, but would take it if the offer comes.

Why is Evans messing about----if he wants him just go and get him.

If it is Hurst seems a long time to wait though I can understand why.

Will eventually get to Nigel Clough!!

Razor - Evans is exactly right to wait to interview Hurst. To get the appointment right it is worth waiting an extra week or so.

"huge resources available" Really ?

If true then an upcoming and ambitious manager like Ross, plus funds makes for exciting times ahead.

However, to my first point. "huge resources available" Really ? At ITFC ? After MEs video interview ? We can but dream.

If he is evans chosen one then employ him. If he is second and waiting don't blame him for telling evans to f off,

I think Marcus evens doesn't want to make any more mistakes. Hopefully he will get the right manager this time and give him some money to spend

Who else is waiting to speak to Hurst and who else just might nip in and grab Ross.? I'm all in favour of getting the right man but I'm also nervous as we have less to offer than other clubs and someone else may just get in first.

Marshall's mullet 5000 supports in the north stand might disagree with you.

It makes sense to talk to potential candidates and see first if they would accept the job if offered and to see how they fit in with the owner's vision and whether that would be a good relationship.
Marcus surely has an idea of who his preferred candidate is, but a common major recruitment error is making clear that someone is the first choice only for them to reject the offer.
Most people would be happy with the appointment of Ross or Hurst.
Ross is a competitive man, he should fancy himself to get the job even if he has to interview against other candidates.

Quite right not to comment. I'm sure he hasn't been offered the job (yet); he may not have decided if he wants it either so why burn bridges with his current club.

Just to put my two penneth in...

Mick McCarthy wasn't a mistake at the time.

He did a good job that needed doing urgently.

Unfortunately he overstayed by two seasons.

Completely the correct approach from Jack Ross - he doesn't wish to be disrespectful to his current employer, St Mirren, and he doesn't want to be presumptuous or upset possible future employers, Ipswich Town.

It's time for patience as time will tell!

Crazy to think that some fans think this is a good move. The Scottish Championship is below the standard of league 1 and maybe league 2.

Marshalls_Mullet ..............the mistake was keeping mick longer than 6 months, mick has done nothing in his career but win the 2nd division title twice and be awarded RTE personality of the year once....mick is a specialist at preventing teams dropping , and he is very good at that...thats all..

@bobble

Mick did nothing in his career.....Except win the league twice?

Mick certainly over stayed his welcome by a year to 18 months, but he certainly deserves recognition for the good job he did for the first 3-4 seasons and is taking far too much stick on this website.

One if the first teamers told me Ross has been offered the job.
Sounds an exciting prospect. However, if he does well & Scotland come calling
will it be another Sir Bobby situation? Nice problem for Town to have I guess.

Well, if Evans has half a brain — pretty sure he does given his empire — he's scheduling the meetings with his top candidates close to each other. I don't think he talked to Ross just yet because can't have two meetings and then say; ‘well I get back to you in two weeks, alright?'

He'll talk to Ross end of the week, second meeting a week later, talk to Hurst on Monday after and announce manager on 30/31 May. Easy as pie.

Think he'll go for Ross by the way.

floridaboy added 12:24 - May 15
By not speaking about any contact with the Town, Ross is only acting as a proper professional should. Maybe he does know more than he is letting on but at the moment he is employed by St Mirren so good on him I say.

Would still like to see him as manager of the Town though!!!

Fingers crossed!

If this guy manages and coaches half as well as he speaks he should do a decent job here. Oh how MM could learn from him.

To put the record straight. Mick McCarthy did a great job for Town.

With very minimal resources he saved Town, got them into the playoffs and kept the club in the division. Do you think any manager in football can produce free flowing (Man Cityesk) football with the squad and resources he has had?
