Sunderland Emerge as Rivals for Ross
Monday, 21st May 2018 09:20

St Mirren boss and Town target Jack Ross has reportedly held talks with recently-relegated Sunderland’s new owners about the vacancy at the Stadium of Light.

An international consortium led by former Eastleigh owner Stewart Donald is set to complete their takeover today and, according to the Daily Record, have already held initial talks with Ross.

Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain previously held the same position at Rangers and is said to be well aware of the job the 41-year-old has done at St Mirren, having taken them from the bottom of the Scottish Championship to the title in 18 months.

Ross has twice met with Blues owner Marcus Evans and the former Clyde, Hartlepool and Falkirk defender remains the bookies’ favourite to take over at Portman Road at 3-1 odds-on with Bet Victor.

Sunderland, who dropped into League One at the end of 2017/18, their second successive relegation, are also said to be keen on Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst, who is the second-favourite for the Blues job at 4-1.

Hurst has always been well up Evans’s list of potential new bosses and he is keen to speak to the former Ilkeston, Boston and Grimsby manager about the vacancy but Town are yet to make a formal approach to the Shrews, who play in next Sunday’s League One play-off final.

On Friday, TWTD revealed that former England skipper Frank Lampard had been interviewed for the Town job and the 39-year-old is the third-favourite to take over at Portman Road at 7-1.

Tim Sherwood and Scott Parker, who have also both been interviewed, are at 20-1 along with Simon Grayson.

Shefki Kuqi, who wasn’t offered an interview despite applying, Östersunds boss Graham Potter, George Burley, Paul Cook, John McGreal, Mark Warburton and Tony Mowbray are all at 25-1.

Evans has conducted an exhaustive recruitment process since it was confirmed former boss Mick McCarthy would be departing this summer. The Blues owner has said he expects to make the appointment in late May or early June.

Ex-Wearsiders midfielder Alex Rae, who coincidentally was St Mirren boss before Ross, is currently the favourite for the Sunderland job with Ross behind him at 5-1, Leicester assistant Michael Appleton at 6-1, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder at 8-1 along with Cook.

"Ex-Town manager McCarthy, who it was reported over the weekend is keen to take over at Stoke City, is at 12-1 to return to his old role at Sunderland.

We have to move, quick. I'd like to think any manager would see us as a more enticing club than Sunderland, but they are still a big name club despite their disastrous season

It's looking like it's time to make your mind up Marcus. I personally don't see why we didn't approach Shrewsbury before the playoffs if Evans is so desperate to speak to Hurst. We don't owe them anything and we could've had Hurst wrapped up and ready to join regardless of how they did in the playoffs. If Ross is the top target then offer him the job today. Although Sunderland are a calamity, they are much closer to home for him and a bit of a free hit with the mess they're already in before taking over.

I'm not so sure he'd go for us over Sunderland. He'd have a far bigger transfer budget with them than us. That's his stock gone up 10 fold🤨

This dilly dallying is an error. Shrews will go up and Hurst will stay, Ross will tell us to stick it, Lamps (a gamble anyway) will not be happy with the war chest and turn us down and we will end up with Grayson. When we could have had Ross had we been decisive. Still 'Mr Evans' will be the apple of your eye though after that ridiculous bit of spin!!

Not evans first choice or he would be here. Sunderland a bigger club new owners -premiership in two years. Ross don't have to a hard decision.

Town have just a good chance as Sunderland
Sunderland have the money but Town are a good club to give a manager time to build and progress, Sunderland will want results straight away.
If Ross believes in himself he will see Town as a route to further his career and possible a quicker route to the Prem.

Why on earth would he go for a disastrous league one club over a Championship club pushing for the top 6.

Dream on Sunderland.

Calm down children! Everyone wanted Mr Evans to take this time and get this appointment right, so let's trust him on this one (one last time). If he feels Ross is the right man for ITFC then it has a good chance of happening as long as Mr Ross is enthusiastic about joining us, of course. Le's jut get behind the club whatever appointment is made and give the new man a chance

Ross is going to be linked with other clubs & I'm sure he will & quite rightly so speak to other clubs. I personally think either way that he will leave St Mirren & I hope that he joins us. I think we are more of a family club than Sunderland, with on paper a better playing squad with players to be added. Sunderland I'm guessing will have a few quid to splash but the new Manager will definately be under the spotlight! If he is Evans number 1 choice he has to try & strike now, don't forget that Ross already has a job so he is in no rush to decide but we need to decide now before we lose out!!

This is concerning, ‘argueably' a bigger club who will give him more funds and possibly a higher wage...
Need to move quick or it wont be at all...

Really cant understand why Georgie and Butch aren't offered it. Burley is by far the best qualified and experienced manager out of all if them

To be clear, he may not go to us, but I can't see him going to a melting pot like Sunderland, in a league below were he could go. Sure maybe they have more money, who cares, they're in league one.

Depends whether he wants loads of money to spend in a season in league 1 or limited funds with a young team in the Championship. Sunderland is appealing as they are (almost) certainties for promotion next season.

Crikey! this - is - becoming - painful.

Talk about dragging it out - the fact that he's given interviews to the likes of Sherwood & Grayson but not Burley & Kuqi still shows how incredibly out of touch he is with our club & our fans.

Wasn't last week's poll showing that over 80% would be happy with Jack Ross?..so why has Evans dithered & faffed about and not got it done?..the 2 interviews can't have gone that well if he's still not convinced?

Said last week when Ross was 1-10 on that if anyone would mess it up we would.

The whole excitement/new optimism that was built up in the final weeks of the season is now starting to turn very sour...hope you prove me wrong for once Marcus but I doubt it very much.
