St Mirren Offer Ross New Deal
Monday, 21st May 2018 17:19

St Mirren are reported to have offered manager Jack Ross an improved contract in order to try to keep hold of the 41-year-old, who has held talks with the Blues over the vacancy at Portman Road.

Ross joined St Mirren from Alloa in October 2016 and has taken the Buddies from bottom of the Scottish Championship table to the title by 12 points in that time.

The one-time defender, who extended his St Mirren contract to the summer of 2020 in August 2017, has twice met with Blues owner Marcus Evans and remains the favourite for the Town job at 2-1 odds-on with Bet Victor.

Ross is also reported to be among Sunderland’s targets, the Black Cats’ takeover by former Eastleigh owner Stewart Donald having been confirmed earlier this afternoon.

Frank Lampard, who TWTD revealed had been interviewed by Evans for a second time on Friday, is second-favourite behind Ross at 2-1 with Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst at 4-1.

We are guaranteed to miss out on this guy with ME twiddling his thumbs and scratching his head. Wait for the inevitable Pardew announcement...

Well that's that then Ross will stay there and we will get Lampard

Well I'm sure we can comfortably double or treble whatever he's being offered. Perhaps if anything it's forcing Marcus Evans to make a decision now whether he's the one or if we move on and go for someone else. It's not helping anyone by dragging on and plans for next season need to get underway as soon as possible.

Roll on the League One play-off final and hopefully soon an end to this suspense! If we lose out on Ross and Hurst it won't be a good feeling. I totally understand why Evans would want to speak to Hurst though due to his knowledge of the English game only one level below us, ten years in management despite being only 43, and success at four clubs already (Ilkeston, Boston, Grimsby, Shrewsbury). I very much like the idea of a manager with no failures or sackings on his CV, but a record of success.

I don't want Lampard. True, he'd be a big media draw, and a way to increase sponsorship revenue. But we did that with Keane and with him, the negatives outweighed any positives.

I accept that Lampard is far more refined and intelligent than Keane. But he has no managerial experience whatsoever.

Ross is experienced, hungry for success and could be an inspired and brilliant choice.

Come on, Marcus. Seal the deal!

It's been reported, not actually offered anything officially. Let alone accepted what he's been reported to have been offered. Everyone needs to calm down and just wait the new manager will come when the times right. Until then we just have to be patient making the wrong decision is easy making the right one takes time, and who says it hasn't already been agreed but Evans is waiting for the right time for us or them.

Jack ross had no experience before his first job, likewise paul hurst both have been successful. Who says Lampard couldn't do the same?

Normal practice for employers to offer improved contracts to employees they do not want to loose. Makes a change for us to want somebody that the other club don't want to part with. We ought to be doing that with players too in the future. My 1st choice is Ross, 2nd Hurst. Prefer not to get involved with Lampard and his lack of success, it will just turn into a media circus that is all about him and detracting from the club in a negative way in my opinion. Yes he may have contacts at Chelsea, but these will no doubt be youngsters that have their heads up their arse and will be out for game time only to go back to their parent club. Develop our own youngsters and actually sign one or 2 players (not for crazy money) to help improve what we have. We don't want any players who think they are bigger than our club. The players we do sign need to be good fits for the squad and the club. As does the manager. If we do offer Ross or Hurst the managers job and they decline for whatever reasons then in my opinion it won't be good for the club.

Don't get why so many are getting knickers in a twist about this.....surely this is a natural step for a club that doesn't want to loose their manager ...if we were in a similar place I would except us to do everything we can to keep outer guy
Also helpsnegotiate a higher compo fee if Ross agrees to sign in the dotted line
I,m no ME lover but think we need to give him a break with this one and let it play out !!

Shrewd business by the Buddies. If he stays - result. If he heads south they could ask for more compensation. What would compensation be? £250k maybe. Just guessing. I can't see St Mirren or Shrewsbury turning down that kind of money.

Lets keep Ross' CV in perspective. I'd be happy to have him based on his previous 18 months. However, prior to that success in Scotland's second tier his record is not that impressive. Failed at Hearts' U20s and then mixed performance at another Scottish second tier side! Evans doesnt need to be begging Ross to come by any means, lets get behind whoever it is that eventually gets the job! COYB

Hurst first choice, Lampard favoured ex player choice... Hursts CV is so more impressive for a manager in the same age group as Ross, in English football and In terms of quality I don't even think him and Ross are in same league. Ross actually has less managerial experience than Kuqi! Can't see the big fascination.. I wouldn't choose .Lampard, but if Marcus goes with him, as I will with any manager, I'll be at every game I can make singing their name...COYBs

AGAIN I say , ME is not a fool and has wide negotiating / interviewing experience AND I'm sure has learned from mistakes of the past ( Keane and Jewell were blatantly two of those ) !
He'll make a quality choice and follow through with genuine clarity for each and all involved .Without finalising any preference , the comparison with RK in any sense is without any merit ; apart from intelligence and other attributes already mentioned, FL is of totally trustworthy character and good with other human beings ( neither RK or PJ up to the mark in this respect ) and Lampard will be a role model for all the younger players -- not that others would not - and has a wealth of international and worldly personal experience to influence his judgements !
Let's still trust ME ,he's got the qualities we need to effect the completion of this contract !
Up the Blues !

The time taken had nothing to do with whether Ross doesn't come.

It could mean that he has been offered the Job and so St Mirren have counterd. Could be they always knew this would happen and it's been in the pipeline a while, could be they put it together the day we were granted permission to talk to him.

If he stays he does so because he prefers to not because of the interview process and timeline which has no doubt been set out to him beforehand.

At the end of the day we will offer more money and a bigger budget. The fact those are not the only criteria for him are 1 reason why he is a good candidate.

I think many are unfair on ME , it is his club and I for one he has changed track on this recruitment process.
If he wants Ross and as important Ross wants us then the deal will get done.

If I was ME I would only be offering the job if I knew 100% the candidate wanted to join.
Might not just be ME's decision here

I would be very strange if St M DIDN'T offer him improved terms. That isn't a worry. The failure to nail it down could yet be.

Ross is now evens (having been 1-2)
Lampard 2-1
Hurst has dropped from 4-1 to 8-1.
Also Ross is the favourite to take over at Sunderland, the previous favourite - Alex Rae - has dropped all the way down to 22-1.
I realise that the odds should be taken with a pinch of salt, to a degree, but it's starting to swing towards Lampard. I wouldn't be at all unhappy with this. Jim Magilton didn't have any managerial experience and he didn't do too badly, certainly a lot better than Keane and Jewell.

surely if we had a half decent idea what we are doing as a football club, we would have knowledge already without necessity to interview the Shrewsbury coach. Looks like it might go plan d if we have one :-/

I am as twitchy about this as the next man/woman but Evans said in his interview he anticipated end of May beginning of June before any appointment so we just have to trust the process. Raging on here or any other site won't change anything.
Having said all that I really don'y want Lampard simply because I don'y particularly want 'Arry to stick his oar in or the club to become a media circus but in the end Evans owns the club and I am hopeful he will not make the same mistakes he made with his other big name appointments.

Which bit of Mr Evans statement didn't some of you grasp. He informed us that it would be the end of May/early June possibly before an appointment was made. Keeping options open and waiting until the season is over (that is Monday 28th May), seems the sensible thing to do.
All possible candidates can then be interviewed and the best one chosen. If in the meantime someone pulls out for another opportunity, so be it; they couldn't have wanted it badly enough in the first place.
In my humble opinion not approaching Mr Hurst or his club is the professional and decent thing to do until next week. He can if he and Mr Evans so wish, be interviewed along with any other latecomers (sackings are happening virtually every day}!
The decision can then be made.
So many on here are using the benefit of hindsight in their criticism of past appointments, and not giving the process a chance.
So in conclusion, be patient and whoever is chosen try and be objective in your opinion.
Remember we are all in this together (apart of course from those who post on here and wouldn't even know the way to PR.
Relax and have a good summer...

The odds are based on how much money has been bet on each 'runner' NOT as any measure of probability.

All the bookies do is move the odds to reflect that money and to ensure they make a profit whoever is appointed.
