Sunderland Given Permission to Speak to Ross But Town Still an Option - Report
Wednesday, 23rd May 2018 17:04

Sunderland have now been given permission to speak to St Mirren manager and Town target Jack Ross, according to a report in Scotland. The Blues are also said to remain an option for the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year.

Earlier, Ross was widely reported to be the man new Sunderland owner Stewart Donald was talking about when he said he was close to naming a new boss at the Stadium of Light.

"We've agreed terms and literally the contracts are with the lawyers," Donald said.

"The man in question is absolutely thrilled, which is what we want, and I'm absolutely delighted that he's coming, so that's exciting for us. I'm hoping that by the end of the day, we can reveal that."

The Black Cats were said to have agreed a two-year deal with Ross, who would be earning five times his current salary, with the contract having an option for a further season, while St Mirren were due to receive £50,000 in compensation.

However, Buddies chairman Gordon Scott subsequently dismissed claims that his club's 41-year-old manager was in talks with the Black Cats, saying no approach had been made to the Scottish Championship winners.

"There has been no contact from Sunderland with us and Jack is on holiday. So unless there is some major skulduggery going on then it's nonsense,” he insisted.

But now Scottish radio station Clyde 1 is reporting that permission has been granted to Sunderland to speak to Ross but with a move to Town “remaining an option” as does staying with St Mirren.

Ross has twice spoken with Blues owner Marcus Evans and was understood to be one of two remaining candidates to succeed Mick McCarthy along with Shrewsbury’s Paul Hurst.

The 43-year-old, whose Shrews side face Rotherham in the League One play-off final on Sunday, is now the 6-4 odds-on favourite for the Blues job with Bet Victor with Ross now behind him at 8-1 along with former Wales and Sunderland boss Chris Coleman.

Frank Lampard is at 11-1 and Scott Parker and Tim Sherwood at 12-1, all three having been interviewed by Evans.

This manager malarkey will be the death of me. The ups and downs today alone have nearly made me pass out. Want Ross badly, but can't see it getting done now unfortunately

Lets face it evans doesnt wanna pay big wages, thats why Lampard aint coming, shame really cause atleast Lampard would of got people talking about ipswich again, media interest and all that, sunderland will offer jack ross bigger wages, bigger transfer funds so its a no brainer for him, at this rate we will probabbly end up with megson, we will basically get someone whos prepared to work for peanuts

How has this been 'managed PortmanTerrorist? As far as I can see we have spoken to Ross but not offered him anything concrete so why would Hurst not come? I will say I'm disappointed not to land Ross but if Sunderland were in for him he was always going to choose them.

I do find it very odd how long this process is taking. I understand the Hurst issue and being part of a play off final. But we seriously risk not appointing either Hurst or Ross. If we miss out on both and end up with a similar option as MM - particularly after all the hype of appointing a highly promising younger manager - then I for one will be very disappointed.

If Evans wants Ross, which seems fairly likely, then surely he now needs to act.

It's all very noble taking time to decide and initially a good decision. But it's June next week and there is a massive amount of work to do, particularly as so many players have already departed. It's essential the new guy is installed soon so work can begin. This for me has dragged on a little too long.

If he doesn't want to come ITFC, then feck him and let's move on.

Matty81 - why would Ross always choose Sunderland? A division 1 club? It's a very sad situation for our club if that's the case and would show how far we have fallen. Further, their new owner only took over yesterday, we'd spoken to Ross before his interest. Again, if that's the case, and Evans was keen he should have wrapped up a deal then the Sunderland thing would be a non issue.

I seriously hope we dont miss out on Ross and Hurst.

@ormey75 That's what happened when Keane joined, and I think we all know how that ended. As much as I admire Lampard and consider him one of the more intelligent former players, I don't think going for a big name with next to no managerial experience is the way to go.

If Hurst doesn't work out, Ross goes to Sunderland (I've think it's a done deal) and Lampard couldn't agree terms (which I assume must mean he was offered job?) what's ME plan D?

This could go from being a good process club taking time etc to a bloody nightmare!

But let's not panic

What a farce, don't know who to believe any more.
I hope Mr Ross realizes what a poisoned chalice Sunderland is.
If you believe Mick was badly treated the Sunderland supporters are 10 times worse.

"according to reports in Scotland........"

Yawn, this is nothing but rumour on rumour. First it's agreed, then no contact, now permission blah blah....

Lets just wait for some FACTS.

That's Ross gone then. Usual procrastination by ITFC sees us miss out on our targets yet again.

Why is everyone blaming ME. He cant speak to Hurst due to the final on Sunday. Maybe Ross is the one who is the issue. Obviously gone on holiday to think over things and who can blame him. As for salary. MM was on £1m a year so the new man is going to be offered something similar.

I think ME waiting for the final to be over is the right thing to do. But so many on here just love to blame the owner for everything when a lot of things are out of his control

If Ross chooses Sunderland then so be it. We move on. Really depends on what sort of an ambitious person he is. Yes Sunderland will have a big transfer budget but they will be playing in Division One which will not appeal to a lot of players!!

Lets also not condemn Ross or ME for any of this.

So far everything is unsubstantiated speculation.

You cannot blame Jack Ross for keeping his options open adn at the same time probably raising his price! He maybe saying to ME , come and get me asap if you really want me?

Sunderland tapping up ...doesn't reflect well on Ross either? Or is that just being naive?

budgieplucker added 18:06 - May 23
We can't really blame Ross, if he hasn't had a firm offer from ME then like anyone else he has to consider the only deal on the table, Sunderland very very keen and persuasive - would you risk this opportunity for yourself and family against another opportunity that may not materialise ? I know we might be a better fit for him long term but I guess from his Family's perspective it is a much closer drive home to friends and family from the North East.

Waiting for the play offs to finish was always going to add an additional risk to the process.

On the flip side perhaps we do now need to reconsider our options perhaps somebody like a Carvalhal is not such a bad shout after all. I still would like to think Maurice Steijn could be a possibility but he doesn't appear to have been close at all!!!

The idea this has been managed badly comes from people who have absolutely no knowledge of the conversations that have taken place or what Evans wants. Two weeks ago no one was saying Ross was the man for the job on here, now there is serious flouncing and toys being thrown out of prams base on speculation.... it's embarrasing
