Hurst: Doig Big on Setting Standards
Thursday, 7th Jun 2018 16:54

New Blues boss Paul Hurst says his assistant Chris Doig is very demanding and “big on setting standards”.

Dumfries-born Doig, 37, a former Scotland U18 and U21 international, ended his playing career under Hurst at Grimsby where he moved into coaching before following the new Town manager to Shrewsbury and now Portman Road

A central defender in his playing days, Doig came through the ranks at Queen of the South before moving on to Nottingham Forest, Northampton, where he played alongside Blues skipper Luke Chambers, Australian side Central Coast Mariners, Indonesian club Pelita Jaya, Aldershot and York City.

“Chris wants to be a manager one day and has progressed up the leagues,” Hurst told the club site.

“He’s very demanding like me and we share the same views on many things in the game. Coaching-wise, we are on the same page definitely.

“He is big on setting standards. He also appreciates the job players have to do. Like me, he wants the players to enjoy going about their work.

"Players who we have worked with us in the past say they have enjoyed it and that’s important.”

Hurst and Doig are currently away on holiday with the new Blues boss set for his official unveiling at Portman Road next Tuesday.

The duo will start their roles at Town on Monday 18th June with the players back for testing as pre-season training gets under way on the Friday of that week.

The Blues are still finalising their pre-season plans with an overseas training camp still being organised. The now-familiar Ireland trip previously pencilled in remains an option, which would see a friendly take place at Drogheda United, while the club are continuing to assess another warmer alternative.

Hurst took his Shrewsbury squad to Portugal last year but despite having been considered that's not the other destination currently being looked at. If the Blues do end up making that trip then there won't be a formal friendly although there may be a behind-closed-doors match. You can find a list of the pre-season fixtures confirmed so far here.

Elsewhere, former Blues midfielder Byron Lawrence, 22, has joined Dulwich Hamlet having spent last season on loan at Leiston from Billericay Town.

I don't know about anyone else, but I really like how much involved Doig seems to be. You didn't often hear much about Terry Connor, albeit he did a lot of work which we didn't see, but this seems different and he seems greatly respected by Shrewsbury and especially Hurst. Really looking forward to this season and great to see how different the whole atmosphere at the club is shaping out!

I have a former work colleague who is a Shrewsbury season ticket holder and if anyone is expecting open attacking football they are going to be disappointed.

Time will tell.

‘Deputy Doig' likes to be seriously involved, when I was at Wembley to watch them he actually led them out and Hurst arrived after. I think the key principle about this interview is that the players are enjoying themselves. The main thing about football is that the players are enjoying themselves, the only way to get the best out of the players.

Cheshire - you are correct to an extent. The team Hurst built was based on a solid defence and midfield. Most games were won narrowly, 1-0, 2-1, not many high scoring games. Most of the goals were spread around midfield and strikers. That said most games i went to last season Shrewsbury played good positive, PASSING, attacking football. Doig is very vocal and is the voice for both of them on the touchline.

Cheshire... i dont think for a second if his football was remotely like we have witnessed in recent seasons he would not have been given the position!

Lets give the guy a chance shall we, it worries me that certain people are not going to give him time, i do think however the true fans will give him and Doig every opportunity, i hope so anyway!

Surely the key point to what style Hurst has played in the past as opposed to what he's going to play now, is the players at his disposal. We have a talented young set of players that are capable of playing good, attractive football, so a good manager as Hurst looks to be will utilize that.
With what he's had to work with previously, he's no doubt had to get the best from a different level of talent, and if that was more direct or defensive, then it shows an intelligent manager to be versatile in doing so.

Cheshire Blue - let it go fella, the Dino has gone 😂 and stop spreading your complete and utter negatory pony. Not sure what your post is trying to achieve here??? ( could have a guess though) cause only you know the answer to that one, but your coming across like a complete ‘sour puss' (sensored that one lol)
A new era is upon us, enjoy! then have your ‘told you so' moment if it goes tits up.

Cheshire - I think most people understand Hurst won't be looking to win every game 5-4, but I can't see him being as pragmatic as MM was. I suspect your former colleague would have seen a bit more open attacking football if Shrewsbury had had players like Waggy, Garner, Huws, Dozzell and Bishop available.

@horsehollarer, im sure MM would also have been more attack minded if he too had Huws, Bish and Dozzell available!

I'm looking forward to seeing what both can deliver. Have a good feeling about this, but also realistic expectations. Mid table first season, but evidence of a squad being built, with some entertainment will do me. That's not being negativive, but applying loads of pressure on these two young fellas would be counter productive.

For me, the most encouraging comments about Hurst from the fans at his ex clubs was that he'll be consistent with the teams he puts out. Two seasons ago McCarthy, after convincingly beating Newcastle, made 9 changes against struggling Rotherham and lost then last season 6 changes in the losing effort against struggling Hull after an impressive away run before that. What?

I think people mistake the fine line between organisation/and negative football. Any team structure has to be built upon organisation otherwise you can forget competiting in professional football, teams will walk over you. It's the merely the mind set of this football team that has to change. Because I'll tell you something offensively; there is some high level championship players in our squad, and they have to step into the field with an attacking mindset, remaining organised whilst being able to express themselves in the opposing half. Ahh football is so simple ay.

I hope we are going to invest in some players because cant see new manager getting as much as MM used to get from this squad.

Looking forward to an exciting new season ahead with these guys at the helm. COYB!

TonyHumes= Lawrence not our player but yes, we have lost 15 players so get point.
Afcfee= we are bound to invest having lost so many players so nothing to be concerned about :). What an opportunity for Hughes and Doig to completely revamp the squad, whilst allowing the likes of the Wolf, Folami and co to develop further. I'd expect to see AT LEAST 7 or 8 new signings at PR.

TonyHumesIpswich you left out Smith, McDonnell & Moore but in reality only 5 consistent contributors in Connolly, Celina, Iorfa, McGoldrick & Carter-Vickers (nb: 4 loan players there).

The optimist could argue replacing those 5 with Emmanuel, Dozzell, Bishop, Huys & Adeyemi goes part way to solving the departures. Of course the pessimist or perhaps realist will say they have not proven they will make it on the park consistently at the same standard as those departures.

My point would be 7 or 8 new signings is more optimistic than hoping those injured players see more time on the pitch. I would expect 2 or 3 additions over summer to bolster the squad and assess the existing during the first half of the season to see whether they meet those standards.
