Finidi Retires
Finidi Retires

It is being reported that Town's Finidi George and long-serving defender Taribo West have joined fellow Nigerian international Jay-Jay Okocha in retiring from international football.

Finidi was left out of the Nigeria squad which went out of the World Cup on Wednesday but, according to West, manager Adegboye Onigbinde wanted the winger in his side in the Far East.

Finidi had always planned to retire from international football once competing in this summer's tournament, even before joining Town from Real Mallorca last August.

His omission from the squad appeared to be a largely political decision after a number of money rows at the African Nations' Cup in January.

The Nigerian Football Association appeared to blame senior players like Finidi, Tijani Babangida and former captain Sunday Oliseh, and they and other senior players were left out of all squads after returning from the tournament in Mali.

Former Derby man Taribo West says that Onigbinde was not responsible for leaving the players out of the World Cup squad and therefore ought not to be held solely responsible for Nigeria's poor showing: "You people should not blame only coach Onigbinde.

"That man didn't have problems with the players that were dropped. I have found out that he wanted to recall the players but some people insisted that he shouldn't do that."

Finidi made 62 appearances for his country scoring two goals.
