Blues Again Linked With Shrews Pair
Sunday, 17th Jun 2018 10:28

Town boss Paul Hurst is again reported to want to recruit defender Aristote Nsiala and midfielder Jon Nolan from his old club Shrewsbury.

According to The Sun on Sunday, the new Blues manager, who officially starts at Town on Monday, wants the duo to follow him to Portman Road but is said to need to sell before he can sign them.

As reported when Hurst’s appointment was confirmed at the end of last month, the pair, both 26, were widely viewed as players the new Blues boss might want to see follow him and a number of speculative stories have appeared in the weeks since then.

Several other Championship clubs, including Leeds, Norwich and Sheffield United, are all thought to be eyeing Nolan, who is contracted to Shrewsbury until the summer of 2020, and is likely to cost a substantial fee.

Centre-half Nsiala, whose contract runs to the end of June 2019, is also understood to have been watched by a number of Championship sides during 2017/18.

Like Nolan, the DR Congo international was initially recruited by Hurst when Grimsby manager from elsewhere in non-league, the pair having previously been with the Everton academy. The new Blues boss signed Nsiala for a second time when he took him from Hartlepool to Shrewsbury in January 2017.

Elsewhere, former Blues striker Kieffer Moore, 25, is linked with a £1 million permanent move to his former loan club Rotherham from Barnsley, who he joined from Town for £750,000 in January.

The Blues are understood to be entitled to a percentage of the small profit the Tykes would make should that deal transpire.

To be honest I think our midfield needs a part overhaul, not that the many of the players we have are not very decent footballers at Championship level but I don't believe they are robust enough to be able to provide a consistent level of availability for the championship. Whilst some gains may be made with some degree of better management of injuries through sport science I think we have to keep the jury out on this one and de-risk the situation in other ways.

I would offer Adeymi up to Rotherham on a short term loan to January to help prove his fitness. Flynn Downes started like a house on fire at Luton but then faded and ended up on the bench for many of the games in the last month or so. I would offer Flynn and Luton a season long loan to continue his footballing education in Division One returning to us in 2019 as a more complete player (hopefully like Josh will prove to be - Paul Warne seems confident enough that he will stand up to the Championship by intimating he would love him back at Rotherham).

I think Nydam provides enough versatility to cover 3 positions and will do well in the Championship next year. I also think Luke Woolfeden has a chance to break through and offers versatility at fullback or centre back, this doesn't mean to say we shouldn't think about bringing in another central defender as I can't see Webster completing more than about 60% of the games on his record to date.

This would then create some room to bring in a loan player and a signing for the midfield in addition to the wingers being sought.

I think Folami has probably a little more to offer at the moment than Morris and Drinan but I would look to be getting the latter two out on loan until January to advance their education.

So my shopping list would be 6 new faces; a central defender, 2 midfielders, 2 wingers, and a target man. Probably 3 loans and 3 signings.

If the boss wants them then I'll trust his judgment. Nice to see us being linked with hungry players. For far too long it was past it journeyman.

Don't see the need for Nolan but we perhaps do need another centre back. In midfield we have Skuse, Bishop, Huws, Dozzell, Downs, Nydam, Ward and Adeyemi. Along with McLoughlin who can play anywhere but is a midfielder. Do we think Nolan is better than what we have? Or worth a substantial fee? If we were paying a substantial fee I'd want it to be for someone who's played at this level or highly rated from a prem acadmemy. Like the sound of Nsiala more though. If we need players it's as hurst said, wide men.

We've released four midfielders. Of course we need at least one other!

If the under 23's were good enough then we would play them.

budgieplucker, you have to remember that when it comes to shopping list, we cant shop in Harrods, we have use charity shops .I wouldn't have gone for Hurst as manager but he seems to be the popular choice and i'll go with the flow and give him support and time. However he cant be expected to keep pulling rabbits out of the hat by way of signing unknowns from the lower leagues. Evans has got to get real and invest more , this in my opinion has been whats holding us back for years, and unless Evans changes his stance, will continue to hold us back. I think we will see more positive approach from Hurst, but cant see us doing more than tread water.

nc41 we don't need to pay a substantial fee for a player who's never played at this level. If we are dishing out a large fee it needs to be where we are in most need

Nolan catches the eye, but not sure about the centre back....if he's available for loan would prefer to see Carter-Vickers at this level.

However could all be paper talk if the new boss's priority is a winger or two?

Surely M E's got to put his hand in his pocket if we've got any serious intent on the top six?

Monkey blue. "We don't need to pay a substantial fee for a player that's never played at this level?" This is where I get confused. A major plus for Hurst (by most) was his understanding of the lower leagues. Good lower league players generally go for decent sums; the equivalent or more than average championship players. Norwich picked up Maddison from league one remember.
Nolan would be a Mcgoldrick replacement and we need quality there (not necessarily saying that Nolan is quality).
I would imagine Hurst has been promised the funds for the positions that need strengthening. Would imagine that was agreed in the interview process.

It's a lazy story isn't it. Manager goes back to former club to bring in recruits, let's hope his net is cast wider than that. Transfer income and shirt sponsorship money - all goes on running the club so the owner doesn't have to put his hand in his pocket. Can we all stop being hoodwinked about the £5-6m he keeps putting in every year, that hasn't happened for 3 or 4 years.

Don't think we need either of these two, yes we need a centre half but I would rather someone of the ilk of Carter-Vickers and do believe our midfield options are quite good already if everyone is fit. If we are that short of funds then it would be better spent on wide players. But I am sure PH knows far more already about the squad than I do so keep the faith and hope ME backs him in whatever he wants.

RobITFC that's the crux of the matter, who honestly thinks ME will be more willing to invest now , ? he didn't indicate that he would in his interview.

Paul about to learn how ambitious Evans really is.

Get Nolan, release Bishop, one plays every game, the other never plays.
Time to get these injury players off our books, McGoldrick gone. Huws, Adeyme, get up and earn your worth or let Downes and co take your birth.

Dirty Dingus. I agree that Marcus has got to invest more.
However, I do think he had his fingers burnt with Keano primarily ( and to a lesser extent with PJ.
I can never forget how bad Priskin was. What a waste of £1.7M!!

The papers have to speculate to stay afloat. This is probably a bit embellished (not fake) news.

Evans seems to take FFP quite seriously and would rather build a club that is sustainable from the ground up, rather than risk the club's future and buy a new first team.

I'm all for this, provided FFP really does what it's intended to

Can understand not wanting to spend money under previous regimes i.e. Keane and Jewell but give Hurst a bit of money to buy some quality and more importantly a couple of players he knows well from his time at Shrewsbury. McCarthy is a manager that has proven he can pick players up on frees and loans but think its only fair we back Hurst financially. Come on ME - put your hand in your pocket!
