Bialkowski's Poland Lose World Cup Opener
Tuesday, 19th Jun 2018 18:29

Blues keeper Bartosz Bialkowski was an unused sub as his Poland side lost 2-1 to Senegal in their World Cup Group H opener in Moscow this afternoon.

Thiago Cionek’s own goal gave the Senegal a 1-0 lead on 38, then M’Baye Niang added a second on the hour following a series of Polish defensive errors. Grzegorz Krychowiak pulled one back for Poland with four minutes remaining.

Once-capped Bialkowski, 30, hadn’t been expected to play with Juventus number one Wojciech Szczesny starting and Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski the second choice keeper in the 23-man squad.

Earlier in the same group, Japan beat Colombia by the same scoreline, the South Americans having been reduced to 10 men in the third minute.

Szczesny didn't exactly cover himself in glory, did he. Sadly doubt Bart will be given his chance but it goes to show that his positional colleagues can be challenged.

Blue&True, I would love this guy. Really promising player, but doubt we will get him!

But unlucky Poland, Senegal weren't brilliant but my dark horses of the competition🐎

Bart and Fabianski better than Szczesny for sure. Must be one of the coaches pets

I think we should stop getting excited as it looks unlikely Bart will get on the pitch in this World Cup. Glad he made the squad, though.
