Updated: Webster Set for Bristol City as Clubs Agree Fee
Wednesday, 27th Jun 2018 15:38

Town have agreed a fee with Bristol City for central defender Adam Webster.

It was initially reported that the Blues would receive £5 million for the 23-year-old, however, the Bristol Post says the initial figure is £3.5 million rising to £8 million, presumably after appearance milestones as per the deal which saw Aaron Cresswell join West Ham in 2014.

TWTD understands some of the fee the Blues will receive will go to Webster's former club Portsmouth, who are due a percentage of the profit Town have made on the deal, believed to be 20 per cent.

Webster cost the Blues £700,000 plus Matt Clarke - who is believed to have been valued at £100,000 - when he signed in the summer of 2016.

The defender is at Ashton Gate this afternoon to undergo a medical with the deal looking likely to go through later today.

News that the Robins had renewed their interest in Webster broke last night as a replacement for Aden Flint, who has moved to Middlesbrough for £7 million.

Webster made 48 starts and five sub appearances in an injury-hit spell, scoring one goal.

The money received for Webster gives greater scope for new boss Paul Hurst to pay fees as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the new season, having already signed Trevoh Chalobah on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

As reported earlier, Hurst is in the process of trying to sign free agent former Crawley Town winger Jordan Roberts, while another wideman, a central defender to replace Webster and probably a striker are likely to be among his other targets.

Earlier this week the Blues were linked with a move for Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, while Shrewsbury's Aristote Nsiala, also a central defender, has been mentioned in connection with Town on a number of occasions, although his former boss Hurst played down those reports on Monday.

If all the moaners on here bleating about Webster going all had one hand on Russia's atomic red button, the world would have ended years ago!
Why do you think PH has sold Webster? Just think of that. It's for a reason. You don't sell a player simply to pi$$ fans off, there's a very good reason! PH hasn't seen Webster in a live competitive game so perhaps he took advice from Klug & if there's a windfall to buy more players (plural) then “winner winner chicken dinner” as the ghastly saying goes!
Lighten up chaps, the future is blue, the future is ITFC!

If PH can use the funds to go back and get his defender from Shrews then good, but let's get Matt Clarke back now even if it costs £1m.

Am sure PH has his own ideas though and i think that Webster, however good he is, does not seem to be able to stay fit. PH demands a settled side from what we read so he was likely a headache he did not need.

Move on. COYB

You couldn't make it up. 12 Out 1 (albeit good) 18 year old loanee in. Genuinely hoped Webster would be one of the talents we'd build around so I am praying that Hurst has a plan around this. Next month is IMO one of the most important in the club's history and this just ramps that up.

All those calling Evans tight. We lose 4-6 million a season before transfers are accounted for, who do you think covers that loss?? And we are expecting further investment? Trouble is he is hardly fighting off potential investors.

Always knew that Hurst would be putiing his stamp on the team, didn't expect it to be quite so soon. Probably the best move, he could go on to be a great player equally he could turn out to be another DMG injury wise.
I just hope that the money is Hurst's to use.
All the best for your future Adam, just have a crap game when we come up against you next.

So that's another year that Evans doesn't need to put his hand in his pocket to run the club. Thought he is supposed to be a real prospect? We aren't building a squad, looks even more unbalanced now.

Not unhappy about this at all. I thought he was over rated and no better than Matt Clarke.
Good to seevsome early changes to our squad. Work in progress but much to look forward to.

Sad to see him go but so long as it gets reinvested this is good business. If he turns out to be a permanent sick note then he's only worth £5m, if he goes on to play well then the £8m seems pretty good.

Disappointing but not overly upset about this.
I saw most of the games that he played last season and there's a lot of him being a ball playing centre half, but I saw a hell of a lot of hoofing. Don't try and convince me otherwise.

A number of assumptions being made here.
For personal or financial reasons did Webster wish to leave.
No comment as far as article reads.
Would new manager have said, even after short time in office, "OK Marcus sell the best defender who has saved the club, scored great goals, and been an injury free regular"
Or would he with background knowledge that he would obviously have remarked," if this guy, who in reality was the opposite to the above, attracts this type of fee, then in greater interests of club, let him go"
I would believe the latter to be the more appropriate.
I suggest those without absolute full knowledge do not " badmouth" manager ( or owner) at this preseason time.

Great bit of business for an overrated sick note.
Paul Hurst clearly identifying early doors, who's up for it and who,s not.
Expect more departures in the coming days.

Would Hurst had joined Ipswich knowing the club's policy was to be ‘sell and loan' going forward? Let's wait and see before ‘derailing'! I'm sure Webster's lack of appearances played a significant part if the manager moves him on.

Well I'm in 2 minds about this, I'm not sure why we're selling a footballing central defender with potential but he does have his injury issues but saying that a little disappointed this has happened. On the flip side the £5M+ we've got for him is reasonable business but should we be selling this type of player to opposition when we supposedly have just brought in a 'passing' style manager?

I wonder how much of that will be reinvested in the squad?, my head says (and this takes in what Evans said in his interview) not all!

So glad some of you don't run our club..Webster is a good player ..but he is injury prone and has a mistake in him..If PH gets Aristote Nsiala to replace Webster then judging by the perfomances I saw towards the end of the season will have a great defender..26 years old//DR Congo international great attitude ..
Its a fact of life e need to wheel and deal and sometimes you have to lose a chess piece to win a chess match..foorball no different..
Don't start the negativity just yet

£5M is a lot of money. However, it's only a good deal if the full fee is reinvested. I'm not suggesting on one player, but Bristol City are reinvesting and so should we. I hope we don't hear the usual excuse of money spent on wages, because frankly we have saved a shed load with high earners already leaving this pre season.

I like Webster, but he is very injury prone. Good business, but providing fee fully reinvested into fees.

This really dissapoints me. Had high hopes for him under Hurst. Just really hope he gets to spend the money.

Didn't agree at the time with replacing Matt Clarke with Webster. We must trust PH's judgement here. Could be a smart move, or we could have sold a future PL player for relative peanuts.

Wow ITFC have some utter Pr1cks as supporters.

You have a new manager and a team that finished 12th. Keep the current squad and you have a team likely to finish around 12th this season.

Some of you have cried like babies over big nasty Mick and now you are crying like babies again without even giving the new manager a chance to show his intentions by recruiting his own players and stamping his mark on the squad.

Some of you are also crying about the (fairly standard) initial fee (rising) and how that means there will be no funds available. Think a little (if possible) previous fees are filtering down from previous sales; football is a progressive income. It's not like selling your Fiesta and buying a newer one. It's a business.

Blimey Mick was spot on calling some of you numbskulls. Why don't you just wait and see who comes in and what they are like. Webster is easily replaceable for that figure. If you get Tilt you will be saying Webster who?

For those crying about the fee and Ipswich failing to command top prices. 3.5m rising to 8 is top dollar foe a player that most teams would avoid with that injury record. WELL DONE ITFC would be a much better response and great let's have faith in our new manager (until he fails) would be a true supporters one.

Never read such utter entitlement, bullsh1t and lack of intelligence from some of you - some real thickies amongst you.

Decent business. Done this with Cresswell, Mings and now Webster. All could be replaced. Hopefully Hurst will be able to spend the cash.

Pilgrimblue added 18:27 - Jun 27
For a start Flint is a better player so they've lost one of their best. Not sure that Webster will fill his shoes unless his injuries at in the past and he scores 6+ goals, i very much doubt.
Hurst needs to wheel and deal and my guess is that he'll go back to Shrewsbury for replacement for much less money.
There's going to be more changes so clear heads needed. Maybe we'll sign Spurs lad!

Not good enough to lead a football playing side.
