Updated: Webster Set for Bristol City as Clubs Agree Fee
Wednesday, 27th Jun 2018 15:38

Town have agreed a fee with Bristol City for central defender Adam Webster.

It was initially reported that the Blues would receive £5 million for the 23-year-old, however, the Bristol Post says the initial figure is £3.5 million rising to £8 million, presumably after appearance milestones as per the deal which saw Aaron Cresswell join West Ham in 2014.

TWTD understands some of the fee the Blues will receive will go to Webster's former club Portsmouth, who are due a percentage of the profit Town have made on the deal, believed to be 20 per cent.

Webster cost the Blues £700,000 plus Matt Clarke - who is believed to have been valued at £100,000 - when he signed in the summer of 2016.

The defender is at Ashton Gate this afternoon to undergo a medical with the deal looking likely to go through later today.

News that the Robins had renewed their interest in Webster broke last night as a replacement for Aden Flint, who has moved to Middlesbrough for £7 million.

Webster made 48 starts and five sub appearances in an injury-hit spell, scoring one goal.

The money received for Webster gives greater scope for new boss Paul Hurst to pay fees as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the new season, having already signed Trevoh Chalobah on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

As reported earlier, Hurst is in the process of trying to sign free agent former Crawley Town winger Jordan Roberts, while another wideman, a central defender to replace Webster and probably a striker are likely to be among his other targets.

Earlier this week the Blues were linked with a move for Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, while Shrewsbury's Aristote Nsiala, also a central defender, has been mentioned in connection with Town on a number of occasions, although his former boss Hurst played down those reports on Monday.

Let's not get too stressed about this. When the lad played he was good but did a few bad games as well.I don't think any of us saw enough of him to really judge just how good he could have become. He did have a lot of bad injuries and who knows if he will ever be 100% fit again for long spells. If the figure of 3.5 million is correct then for me that is very good business.
We have to trust the judgement of Paul and just see who he brings in and remember he has vast knowledge of the lower leagues.
I am very happy that we are at least sorting things out early so fingers crossed everything will turn out fine,so let's not start jumping up and down just yet.
I have a lot of faith in the manager and all of us should get behind him in whatever decisions he makes.

Well, isn't this this is the business model that the club should be operating? Buy in or grow your own young talented footballers and sell them on for more than we paid for them. How refreshing, compared to hiring yesterday's men (Douglas, Bullard, Bowyer etc). Who knows what gems are hiding under Klug's stewardship who can step into the back line? We should have never sold Matt Clarke and got Webster in part exchange. I think this is the way to go.

Did any one expect any difference good bit of business on Mr Hursts predecessors part.
Lets hope Mr Hurst can wheel and deal like MM did otherwise the honey moon is going to be very short.

This is a quality piece of buissness getting this much money for a decent mid table CB and I would be chuffed if I was confident ME would then reinvest this into another player but we all by now know we will get 1 mil player max as a replacement so this is yet another disappointment but I would like to be proved wrong

I'm gutted as I rate him so highly !

However if Ipswich play with a back three this season they have

Chambers, Chalobah, Knudsen, Emmanuel, Spence and woolfenden so that's plenty of cover.

Not letting this dampen the good mood at the money COYB

I am more than happy to give a chance to Woolfenden or Smith instead of Webster. The only worry is with his injury record will we ever see that appearance clause triggered?

Please will everybody please calm down, yes we all have our opinions about who is good and who is crap. As Webster has had a lot of injury problems how can anybody judge whether he is the type of consistently reliable centre back we need. Let us give our new manager a bit of time to settle in make decisions on what who he needs and wants rid of before jumping up and down and hammering away at the keyboard. Some people do keep going on about the great leader we have lost and how wonderful he was at wheeling and dealing, yes Jonathon Douglas, Giles Coke & Larsen Toure spring to mind. Nostalgia is wonderful we only remember what we want, and yes some good players came to the club during his reign but like all managers he made quite a few mistakes

EVERYBODY BREATHE
Whilst my initial thoughts are of disappointment, lets trust he new regime until they fail us before getting all negative. I have no doubt Hurst would have sanctioned this move, ME has a track record of backing the manager and turning big money offers down if the manager wants. As others have said Websters track record on injuries is suspect and this may be good business. I trust Hurst will have replacements lined up and I would not be surprised if he goes for lad from Shrewsbury, if he does and lands him or someone similar plus the Chelsea loan and we have money left over I think that is great business.
If we don't get somebody else in then the frustration being shrill be justified but please if not for the good of this site do it for you own health and do NOT get stressed just yet, lets see what happens. I for one am looking forward to a cracking season of improving performances and atmosphere mainly at PT but hopefully win here too. Lets also remember we have Woolfenden and Smith coming through the youth set up. COYB

Same old crap, but different day and manager. All of this money needs to be reinvested along with sponsorship money. Trouble is, Marcus won't.

How many season tickets sold by the way????.

Cannot be positive about this

Wonder if ME contacted Peterborough about this. The question is now, How much will PH get to reinvest in his squad?

We have no idea why he has been sold or whether he asked to leave. His injury record, as pointed out numerous times is poor. If it continues then we have good money for someone that rarely plays, if he turns out to be a great player then the add-ons will compensate. The positive point for me, is that the business is being done now, not at the end of the close season, it gives us a chance to get someone in and get them up to speed with the PH/CD way of doing things before the season starts in earnest.

I'm with the 50% such as judespiveyg who think this is good business. He is a GOOD player, but he is also injury prone and has an error in him. He's not the most physical or committed player, and is not an organiser either. So, as long as Hurst uses the money wisely, I'm pretty pleased with us making a large amount of money that can be reinvested in 2-3 other riding stars from the lower leagues.

If I thought we'd use the money to get talent in return, I'd be ok with this, but time after time (Cressy, Mings, Murph) we've seen millions upon millions received and nothing spent. Even worse, we give up the bidding when fees reach even a fraction of what we've received for our guys.

We aren't privy to the real situation...he may have wanted to leave for all we know. 3.5 Million rising to potentially 8 is a reasonable fee for Webster. I'm not happy with us selling him...I'm just stating the obvious.

At times I think some of you lot don't even want a return to the premier. You seem happy to plod along in the championship till you die. That's the only reason you could be happy to sit back and back ME. What on earth is wrong with you?!!!

What a joke. If we are selling lets get £5M up front, not £3.5 in drins & drabs. Especially as they got £7M for Flint.

Sad times when Bristol City are stealing our best players. We used to be way bigger than them!!

This has burst the feeling good factor bubble, well & truly.

Its all about money with Evans - NOTHING ELSE.

No way Hurst wanted to sell our best Defender, especially as he stated he wants to play football.

Webster hardly played for us!!

If this is the sign of things to come then we are on the way down, best ball playing CB we have and we sell him !!!! not to a Prem team but a bloody sh1t outfit in our division. Like all our other sales in the last few years, the money won't be spent on players.

billlm added 21:05 - Jun 27
My take on it is, perhaps PH wants fit players and not to many sick notes in a squad that's small compared to most championship teams, caroyal MCG now Webster, I think hyams gone hasn't he that's 4 sick notes of the wage bill,
