Updated: Webster Set for Bristol City as Clubs Agree Fee
Wednesday, 27th Jun 2018 15:38

Town have agreed a fee with Bristol City for central defender Adam Webster.

It was initially reported that the Blues would receive £5 million for the 23-year-old, however, the Bristol Post says the initial figure is £3.5 million rising to £8 million, presumably after appearance milestones as per the deal which saw Aaron Cresswell join West Ham in 2014.

TWTD understands some of the fee the Blues will receive will go to Webster's former club Portsmouth, who are due a percentage of the profit Town have made on the deal, believed to be 20 per cent.

Webster cost the Blues £700,000 plus Matt Clarke - who is believed to have been valued at £100,000 - when he signed in the summer of 2016.

The defender is at Ashton Gate this afternoon to undergo a medical with the deal looking likely to go through later today.

News that the Robins had renewed their interest in Webster broke last night as a replacement for Aden Flint, who has moved to Middlesbrough for £7 million.

Webster made 48 starts and five sub appearances in an injury-hit spell, scoring one goal.

The money received for Webster gives greater scope for new boss Paul Hurst to pay fees as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the new season, having already signed Trevoh Chalobah on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

As reported earlier, Hurst is in the process of trying to sign free agent former Crawley Town winger Jordan Roberts, while another wideman, a central defender to replace Webster and probably a striker are likely to be among his other targets.

Earlier this week the Blues were linked with a move for Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, while Shrewsbury's Aristote Nsiala, also a central defender, has been mentioned in connection with Town on a number of occasions, although his former boss Hurst played down those reports on Monday.

We have some right flakes as fans nowadays reading these comments, "Soul Destroying" said one.....WTF.....you should stop watching Love Island and get out more!

If the sale of an injury prone slightly better than average defender destroys your soul I'd seek out a psychiatrist pronto.

Our new manager needs our support not over-reactions of epic proportions from some, I'm sure he knows a damn site more about the game than the majority.

It's a good bit of business in my opinion COYB

Shame it hasn't really worked out for Webster here. No doubt he has talent but he's just never had a good injury free run to show us what he can do over an extended period of time. With that in mind I think we cannot turn down the money for him as it could potentially bring in at least 3 new signings

delias - each to their own on here, losing your best defender might not please everyone, get over it. Your response to my post makes you nothing short than a complete fecking Bell End!

The optimism is fast evaporating you got what you wished for now you don't like it.

Hurst is just doing what he's got to do.

The concern is that this categorically confirms that Evans is not investing any money into the club. You just cant get away with that forever. Nine times out of ten it will end in relegation, in the end.

We'll just have to cross our fingers and hope we're the one out of ten that flukes it....

Disappointed at the sale but just praying that Hurst is given this money [ and more ] to bring in some new blood

Swn98 as usual we disagree I got what I wished for and my optimism is still intact and I am loving it. Just because a few on here have over reacted to this does not mean we were wrong about wanting your blessed MM gone.

I would assume Hurst was consulted. I doubt he has objected to this move. I'm very disappointed as I think Webster is if not now, very close to being a premiership quality defender.

Cat Sorry Delias is right. Whining your pants off over losing a slightly better than average defender that a few (may) deem our best defender when he plays, for a very good fee without having a clue of who PH will replace him with = Snowflake. Failing to see that = bellend.

gcon You do realise that if what you say is correct ITFC would have been relegated nine times in the last ten seasons right?

Anyway who will Paul Hurst sign today?

Some of the comments on here...
'Confirms ME won't be investing in the team again' a) he told us that in his interview and b) he invests 6-8m a year.
'you don't start your transfer activity by selling your best player' If we don't have any transfer funds how do you suggest we do it? Clubcard points? Get the credit card out?and end up like Villa? That is exactly the way to do it, only this time Hurst has left himself 5 weeks to get in replacements unlike MM, who left a day after Murphy was sold.
'Cant believe we are selling our best player' He is not our best player, in fact i would say Bart, Waggy, Bish, Dozzell, Huws, are all better players and worth more than him. So by my reckoning we have sold our 6th best player. In fact had you watched him last (when fit) i thought he looked average at best. This is a good deal for us, and a chance for Hurst to put his stamp on the squad and freshen it up.

ITFC are proud to announce that we will be running some exciting courses course at Portman road this summer.

Starting on the 3rd will be a Maths for beginners class — focussing heavily on Percentages and ratios, so if you are having trouble working out your 20% ‘s and 25:46 then why not pop along. Cost for this course in £35 + 15% for non-season ticket holders and -8% for season ticket holders. There will only be 12 chairs for 15 places so get here early. If you are left stand at least you will be able to work out why.

Remember Sophie the Tarantula? Well following on from last years successful phobia day we will be holding another. This year Suffolk Zoo will be leaving Sophie in the comfort of her cage and will bringing in Mick. For all this with fears and phobias that Mick is trying t undermine the club and players then please come along and hold and stroke him and realise that actually he's worth loads of money and couldn't really give a sh1t.

On the 16th we will be holding an uncreative writing course. So much bullsh1t is written these days so why not pop a long (bring a pen of course) and learn how to take all the Drama and fantacism out of your writing.

Our well-being clinic will also be running. Dr I. M A Bedwitter will be here to help with all those anxiety and paranoia issues that you may be facing.

To book on any of these course please pay 20% deposit — so Marcus can pocket it.

Delias - could not give a flying one who agrees or not, it's about having your own opinions on here and not pleasing the ‘masses' or half a dozen in your case!

I can't see how people view this as 'sole destroying' ! It's a shame to lose any decent player but a new manager must be able to bring in new players and that for a club like ours involves selling first. I was very impressed with Luke Woolfenden away at Reading last season and see him as a natural replacement in waiting. Webster promised much as a ball playing centre half but didn't really set the world on fire and as a defender, he's a bit weak and pushed round I've felt. I think 5m is sound business if a chunk of that is spent on other areas, ie a decent winger

I remember when Kieren Dyer was sold how gutted most fans were but that 6 million essentially bought us the players that took us up. I don't have an issue with Webster going if its the fee were told and not the 2.5 million initial payment rumoured and then more spread over 3 or 4 years and is reinvested in the playing staff because we are getting woefully low on numbers and back up. I trust Hurst with the money he knows the lower leagues like Burley did so lets give him a chance.
I do however have an issue with those saying Marcus Evans put 6-7 million in a year as the books last year ot the year before showed 500,000 investment plus a couple of our youth teamers secretly sold from under our noses for a total of 1.5 million (Which kind of doesnt fit with the "5 point plan" of his). Its not easy running a football club im sure but when youre worth 900 million (Albeit assets included) WHY and WHAT does he want from the club? Is it a tax right off against his holding company or to get us promotion as he wont see a penny until we go up.

And Swn98 we wished for a manager who wasnt stuck in the dark ages with dull football and we have one so instead of the "Get what you wish for" why not support the new guy instead of what it feels like is you and a couple others waiting and hoping for him to fail! Or go support the budgies maybe?

People gutted and wanting to build team around a player that hasnt set the place alight.....when he was fit.
Chalobah may be twice the player, who knows.
Great bit of business, nice one ME and Hursty.

Cant wait for the season to start.
