Derby Latest Club to Target Waghorn
Monday, 9th Jul 2018 12:03

TWTD understands Derby County are now leading contenders in the chase for Blues striker Martyn Waghorn.

As revealed at the end of last month, Middlesbrough are keen to land the 28-year-old, while Nottingham Forest, who were previously linked, and Birmingham are also among several Championship clubs eyeing the former Sunderland, Leicester and Wigan frontman.

We understand the Rams, managed by Frank Lampard, who was among those interviewed for the Town boss’s job earlier in the summer, are now showing strong interest in Waghorn, who enjoyed a hugely successful first season with the Blues following last August’s £200,000 move from Rangers.

The South Shields-born striker, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2019 with the club having an option for a further season, was the Blues' top scorer with 16 goals and also picked up 11 assists. No one else in the Championship was directly involved in more goals.

Given that success, it would take a very significant fee to tempt Town to part with a player who quickly became a popular figure at the club.

Derby previously came close to signing Waghorn on loan from the Foxes in January 2011 and were linked with a permanent move the following summer.

Meanwhile, the Town squad fly back from their Spanish training camp today with the players being given tomorrow off before returning to Playford Road on Wednesday.

The Blues would appear likely to make a decision on whether to sign trialist Kane Vincent-Young later in the week.

Town may also receive a response from Blackpool regarding their £550,000 bid for central defender Curtis Tilt in the days to come.

We understand that there is substance to the weekend reports relating to that offer with the Tangerines believed to targeting £1 million for the 26-year-old former Wrexham centre-half.

Was not too concerned about the Bart and Brum possible transfer, as i couldn't see that happening. The Derby link with Waggy is a bit worrying. I can see this happening.

The only thing I would say is that Waggy does seem to really like it here. He is always smiling and messing about. A Rangers fan told me he wasn't like that there.

He cost £200,000 peanuts in this day and age offer him a new contract with a significant pay rise then that would free up the option of letting Garner go.
We cant keep letting good Championship players go and replace them with league 1 and 2 players.

Better be BIG money if he goes. Championship's most creative player, can't say I blame teams for looking. I could, however, blame us for letting him go for anything less than 6m

Good God!...we're under pressure from these wannabie clubs, I'd be a bit miffed if just one of Waghorn or Bart goes. Now if they are both sold, well...

there is no one we could afford to replace him. Selling him even for 5 mil shows we would have no promotion ambition what so ever.

Have I missed something here? Have we said that Waghorn is for sale? Or is it like the article says, he is only being targeted by Derby.

The doom and gloom on this site is depressing at times.

Don't want to lose Bart but we must keep Waghorn. His goals, set piece delivery and clever link up play make him virtually irreplaceable.

Shouldn't even consider bids less than £10m. Why should we? Every other team seem to be able to demand whatever price they want for their players but we just accept mediocre bids for all of our star players.

I don't believe all the negative comments on here, we still have four weeks before the season starts and a number of you think we are going to get relegated, if that's the case all of you should cancel your season tickets and go and moan on another teams site.

If we sell Bart and Waghorn im finished with this piss pot club.
We should be building a team around these 2 quality players.

The over reactions on here to unconfirmed speculation is incredible. Who says Derby or Middlesborough will even bid and even if they do why would we sell Waggy unless it's crazy money. The BART situation is more complicated love him to bits and he has been our best player by far for the last 3 seasons and Evans should be offering him the best deal we can. However if he won't sign a new contract and we can sell him for 4 or 5 million then we have to do it as we can't see him walk away for nothing at the end of the season.

Should Bart and Waggy go I would be very concerned that the season could turn into a battle for survival. Even if we got 10m for the pair I find it hard to believe we could adequately replace them for that money. While some of the cheap players have done well there have been plenty of others that have failed. Bart and Waggy are tops in their position and if we are to progress we need them.

There has been just too much good news, good feeling going on just lately towards our club, let's just stop this by putting negative posts on this site?
If we have some very good players, they will then be the envy of other clubs, it doesn't mean that we are prepared to sell them, or that they are prepared to leave what could be a very successful Ipswich Town squad.

I don't want to lose either Waghorn or Bart, but of the two, I think Waghorn is the hardest to replace. He's been a revelation, and presumably PH also knows his worth. How much would we have to pay to get an equivalent? Certainly more than ME would be prepared to shell out. Ergo, Waghorn must stay.

Lots of comments on here stating we mustn't recruit from League 1,2 if we sell our prize assets. Yet it's where these very players came from. OK Waghorn/Garner from Scotland, but similar standard. Same for Mings and Webster both sold on for huge profit.. Just because there is interest in our better players doesn't mean we'll sell them, remember McGoldrick £11 million bid rejected. Then amusingly after his injuries ME gets told he should have sold him. Very easy to find fault. Have some faith in ME and the new manager. COYB

It's the silly season again when other clubs are trying to destabilise Ipswich Town. They are all scared of us !

Now the manager is actually back in the country perhaps he can quash all these rumours and titttle tattle immediately.

At least I hope he can!!
