Town Agree Fee for Posh Winger Edwards
Friday, 13th Jul 2018 18:07

Town have agreed a fee with Peterborough United for winger Gwion Edwards.

The 25-year-old has been on the Blues’ radar since May when they were linked with the former Wales U21 international along with Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.

Last month Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony tweeted that Blues owner Marcus Evans had contacted the League One club’s director of football Barry Fry with Edwards widely believed to be the reason for that call.

Earlier this afternoon MacAnthony revealed that the former Swansea and Crawley man had set his heart on a move to a Championship club, who we can confirm are Town.

The precise fee is currently unconfirmed but is understood to be a significant sum with Edwards's former club Crawley set to receive a six-figure sell-on from the deal agreed when he joined Posh in 2016.

Talks regarding personal terms are set to take place over the next few days with Edwards looking set to become new manager Paul Hurst’s third Blues signing.

What's pot luck about him?

We need wingers fact.

We have signed wingers fact.

This is bad then why?

Tilt bid shows we are clearly seeking defenders.

So all in all good news.

Perhaps you misread. Article says wingers, not whingers. We have enough of those.

A new manager is reshaping his squad, where us the issue. Oh are we not doing it in the right order, wasn't aware that we were playing leisure suit Larry. Sometime life doesn't just happen in perfect order but who cares if you knocked up the misses pre or post marriage so long as you have a happy baby. Let's wait for the baby.

This has clearly been in the pipeline a while so maybe other things are too.

As with any signing there is some risk but he's good player ready and wanting to take a step up. Bosses of for Posh last year and now he has his chance.

And equally whikst too will be delighted to see defenders in I fail to see how a manager capturing (if it happens) a player that fits his profile, that plenty of other clubs are in for, that fills a position where we only have 2 recognised players, one of whom is injured is a bad thing?

Unless you want to see Freddy running the left touchline again this season?

We obviously need a couple more defenders in,but I think we still
need another quality striker capable of 15/20 goals a season. If anything happens
to Waghorn we'll be up the creek without a paddle,as Garner and Sears just don't
have the quality or goals to push us into that top six.

Sounds like a good player....just a bit prone to injury...

Glad we are starting to sign players....we have 20 days now for Hurst to build his team. We have lost a fair few players also...so don't think we should sell anymore given our present predicament.

It appears some on here are struggling with the eradication of 'the life and times of McCarthy'! Unwilling to give Hurst a sniff of a chance but more than willing to 'watch the wheels go round and round' under 'Groundhog Day' McCarthy!

I have been a supporter for over 50 years so feel I am entitled to have my own opinions whether you agree with them or not ! I have seen the club through thick and thin and will support them until I can no longer , I will have stopped breathing , but this is the first season I have truly become worried for the coming season ! If that doesn't please you I am sorry but that is not a concern for me . My concern is that nothing so far has given me any reason to believe anything different . Abuse and down votes mean that the people doing that are small minded and incapable of honest acceptance of other people's thoughts , feelings and opinions !

It's fine to have an opinion, if you want to worry so be it BUT in what way is signing a sought after winger bad?

Also of were going to trot out the I'm allowed my opinion blah blah can we not then criticise the use of the vote buttons.

Just hypocritical (especially after one has used them oneself)

I enjoy reading meekreech' posts, unlike some on here he hasn't got his head buried in the sand pretending it's not happening. I am worried about this season and feel I have good reasons to be concerned. It wasn't so long ago that we were "struggling with depth of squad" and having to play anyone who was able. And now we have released or sold a large host of players across all our squads and brought in two wingers and an on-loan CB as compensation. There are people here banging on about how our defence is "stronger" (hows that plausible, we have lost 5 defenders and brought in 1). I am deeply concerned and think the bookies are right about the possibility of our impending relegation. Nothing so far has given me any reason to believe anything different.

My best mate is POSH till he dies and admits PUFC is like the EastEnders of transfer dealings with Fry at the wheel and MacPikey calling it all out on twitter.
He says that Edwards is absolute quality and anything less than 1 million is an absolute steal.
He has been injured twice and both quite seriously, but has come back twice the player which is encouraging.
The reason he is being sold so early is that they can get money for him now but if it goes to January then Rangers as a foreign club will sign him on a pre-contract for nothing as his contract goes in June 2019.

Great BCWYW4 and that's all fine but I will ask again...... (especially since Meek won't reply and is still trigger happy with the down arrow)

How can this signing possibly be a bad thing?

Not saying it means we are signing Ryan Giggs not saying people shouldn't worry but again...

We need wide players so how can signing one be a negative thing?

And what is the pot luck opinion based on, if you or he are season ticket holders at Posh or have seen the lad play then I'll consider those opinions seriously, otherwise I'll have to go with the few thousand thay watch him on the reg and are gutted at the news

I am concerned too about lack of signings and we now have less than three weeks to end of transfer window and start of season.

However this player looks half decent so step in right direction. Now to get centre backs in.

If we have not signed a couple of defenders by next sunday then i will be worried. They will need at least a week or two to get use to system and we need to get off to a good start as the fixtures are relatively easy.

Let's hope he can pick a winger out better than Mick the muck as he signed about 8000 prospective wingers and they never became regulars.

I think that the answer to the slightly pointless debate above is that we need both centre-backs and wingers (a Murphy style target man would be good as well). I am very worried about the defence; Spence and Knudsen as centre-backs are OK in an injury crisis, but not as long-term answers. So far as I know the youngsters are not ready to step up. However, we also need to score goals and need wingers both as an outlet and a supply to the forwards.

BlueandTruesince82 added 10:01 - Jul 14
If only that were the debate.

Sadly it's actually should we refuse to sign any players for other positions until we have signed defenders?

No, we should sign good players that are wanted to by other clubs when we have the chance.

Ipswichbusiness added 10:09 - Jul 14
BlueandTruesince1982 I think that we are in complete agreement; signing a winger does not stop you signing a centre-back (or vice versa), funds permitting.

Nottingham Forest (9) and Bristol City (8) are inundated with wingers in their first team squad, so not sure why they have been linked with another? If you look at their fan forums, they are both quite shocked with the link as they both have huge squads already.

I rarely post on here but i can't see any negatives to signing Edwards.

We have been served up absolutely dire performances for years under Mick. I remember watching us away at Blackburn a few seasons ago when we went down 2-0 to an inevitable Rhodes brace. We set up defensively and showed no fight whatsoever. This has happened constantly throughout Micks reign. The majority wanted him out, me included and we now have to trust in Hurst.

If he solves the injury mess we've had at the club for years alone it would be a huge boost. Imagine having Huws, Adayemi and Bishop playing regular football for us again, that alone would inject some much needed quality in midfield.

Webster was injury prone throughout his spell with us, we received a good fee given what we spent on him and if for instance we replace him with Tilt, it would then look to be a great piece of business.

We've struggled with having no width for years, Hurst is looking to address this and he's bringing in players he's seen from the lower leagues so we have to trust his judgement. To add to this, they're players we would own rather than constant loans.

I've no problems with loans but with the likes of Celina but he was a winger and we didn't play with width under Mick, this meant he was wasted. I think under Hursts prospective formation, Celina would excel.

I have loved McGoldrick for years. My fiancee could never see it when we went to games and i had to constantly tell her "how good he was on his day". He was though forever injured and i can see why he's been let go alongside the wages it's freed up. Hyam the same albeit less of a wage drain than McGoldrick.

We do need to keep Bart and Waghorn though as they're the two genuine players of quality in our starting eleven. I would be gutted to see either leave.

My overall point though is that we need to trust in Hurst and not question his judgement on matters. He has time left in the window and i fully believe he will land enough targets to get us competitive come the first match against Blackburn.

I for one am very much looking forward to the new season, far more than i have for years.

I do reply but find it is generally pointless with the mindset of the majority of the posters on here . If you are looking for a reason from me for my doubts on the suitability of the player in question think back to our last expensive transfer from there and add in the comments regarding the injury record of this player I think that warrants some serious consideration and feelings of doubt . A lot of the fans at Posh said he is a good player at times but with his injuries being easily acquired those times are few and far between . With the standard of pressure in this league on being able to maintain fitness and competitiveness I am not sure he is able to make the step up to the higher levels required , as the needs in this league being so much higher and stronger due to the different types and class of player .

It sounds to me that some posters on here are getting desperate about signing players.I'm sure everything is in hand and that Paul and his team have players in mind.Transfers take time with club and agent involved, plus the fact clubs are only now in the early days of returning back to there clubs for preseason training.
Let's not panic just yet and have faith in Paul.By the way this guy from Peter'b sounds good to me so let's just hope he puts pen to paper.

Just down voted you. Only because you said "those down voting are small minded." As you were small minded enough to down voted me I thought I thought I would lower myself to make a point - not that I really give a flying one. But just saying.

Not sure why you think you think you are the only one who's opinions matter and the only one who isn't small minded when they down vote.

See, a reasoned post. All fair points

But he played 30 games last year and was a stand out performer.

Can he make the step up? Who knows, risk with any player but he deserved his chance surely?

And equally you must admit you we need wingers

Some of the posts here are (unintentionally) hilarious! Do some of you genuinely believe we'd recruit a much sought-after young manager who then appears immediately unaware of a) players required and b) starts signing just any old rubbish???
