Town Confirm Edwards Signing
Tuesday, 17th Jul 2018 10:05

Town have confirmed the signing of winger Gwion Edwards from Peterborough United on a two-year deal with the club having an option for a further season.

News that the Blues had had a £700,000 offer accepted for the 25-year-old broke on Friday with discussions regarding personal terms continuing over the weekend and yesterday when he also underwent a medical.

Edwards is manager Paul Hurst’s third Town signing and the first he has paid money for following the recruitment of loanee Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea and Jordan Roberts, who joined on a free transfer after leaving Crawley.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be here, I can’t wait to get started now," Edwards told iFollow Ipswich. "I’ve just signed on the dotted line now. I’m really excited.

“I really enjoyed my time with Peterborough and I wish the club well but now I’m looking forward to kicking on here.

What will he offer the Town side? “Pace really, I like to run with the ball and just try and create some chances, set some goals up and get some goals myself.”

He says he had good reports regarding new Blues boss Hurst when he asked around after the move had been mooted.

“I’ve spoken to a few people who were at Shrewsbury with him and other lads who know him and all I’ve heard is good things," he added. “The boys I’ve spoken to today, they've said good things, they’re enjoying it.

“No doubt he will have some fresh ideas and I think everyone at the club is excited to see what’s to come.

"I’ve been looking to make the step up to Championship football and thankfully Paul believes in me and has given me this opportunity to come and play for Ipswich.

“Hopefully I can prove to everyone that I’m good enough to be here and do well. This is definitely a team that I’m excited to be a part of and I’m looking forward to the start of the season."

The Welshman had spells with Aberysthwyth Town and Cardiff City as a schoolboy before joining Swansea’s youth set-up as an U15.

Having signed professional terms with the Swans, the Lampeter-born wideman was sent out on loan to St Johnstone in Scotland in January 2013 where he made his first senior appearances in a spell which ran to the end of the season.

He rejoined the Saints for the whole of the following campaign and over the course of his two spells made a total of four starts and 20 sub appearances for the Perth-based club, scoring once.

In March 2014 he moved to then-League One Crawley on loan, scoring on his debut as a sub in a 2-0 victory over Tranmere, and the following summer he moved to the Red Devils on a permanent basis having been unable to break into the first team at Swansea.

After making 71 starts and 12 sub appearances for Crawley, scoring 15 times, Wales U19 and U21 cap Edwards joined Peterborough in June 2016 for an undisclosed six-figure fee. He went on to make 62 starts and 12 sub appearances for Posh, netting 16 goals.

Edwards will make his first appearance in a Town shirt tonight when the Blues face his old club Crawley - who will receive a six-figure sell-on windfall from the deal - at East Grinstead's East Court (KO 7.30pm).

Welcome Gwion! Excited about this one. Hopefully he'll be the winger we've wanted for years.

Any idea if he'll feature tonight?

Welcome Gwion! A very healthy games to goal ratio for a winger as well which is exactly what we needed.

Really good signing: pace, direct & with a eye for a goal: we have lacked pace in the team especially wide areas since Ryan Fraser & it's great it's a permanent signing: look forward to seeing him against Blackburn

Good age and good goal return so looks good.

Centre forward who can score goals and centre half and we should be almost there---assuming the sick notes are fit of course!!

@Northstander , would not have though so , the money that we got from the WC alone would raise Barts money by just over 2500 a week , so money from Webster not touched or only very slightly , on top of that we got 1 Mil for the young lad , and we have had around 15 wages of the books including Didz who was one of the higher earners .!..We have paid out

700,00K on fee,s
2 wages
1 loan plus wage contribution

So we should have a fair bit left - all of Websters money and plus some , we will wait and see where the money actually goes this time.!!

I know a few Peterborough fans and they cant belive we paid £700k on him. Apparently very average at best, doesnt track back and has a bad attitude. will be lucky to get 5 good games out of him.
