Wilder Rules Blades Out of Chase for Waghorn
Thursday, 19th Jul 2018 22:40

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has ruled his club out of the running for Town striker Martyn Waghorn, who he says has had a price tag of £8-£10 million put on his head by the Blues.

Earlier today, the Blades were reported to have made a £5 million bid for 28-year-old Waghorn, Town’s 16-goal top scorer last season.

While we understand the South Yorkshire club have shown some interest in Waghorn this summer, along with the likes of Middlesbrough, Derby, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham, Wilder says Town’s valuation is beyond his club’s means.

“I think another one that I think has got a price tag of £8-£10 million on him, so that rules us out straight away,” he told Sheffield Live TV (below, 18mins 21secs). “Any of those numbers.”

“I think from my background as well, I’ve got to make sure that I make right decisions that we don’t overpay for players and then we’re suffering in two or three years’ time and we’re breaking teams up because we have to.

“Ambitious, yes. Wanting to spend money, we feel we have done. What is a player’s worth? We have to look at the market and we have to basically look at our instincts and our knowledge and experience of players, what we feel they’re worth.

“And, I’ve got to say, £8-£10 million is a huge number, as are the numbers that are banned about for [other players].”

Speaking this morning, Town boss Paul Hurst admitted that he couldn't guarantee that Waghorn would still be with the Blues on the opening day of the season.

Wilder also spoke about former Blues striker David McGoldrick, who is currently on trial at Bramall Lane.

“He’s a proper footballer, he’s had a few injury problems, but if there are no deals out there or this is a better deal for us financially in terms of what he brings to the football club, I’ll push for it and try and make it happen,” he said.

“I’m not a snob in terms of who we sign and where we get them from, in terms of the players we’ve already got.

“In the training sessions, he wants to come in, which is definitely a tick in the box straight away, he’s not a prima donna footballer.

“He’s moved back up to Nottingham, that was a bit of an issue when he was living in Ipswich and he had his family back in Nottingham.

“[In football], there are issues when you do live away from where you work, the travelling, the amount of time you’re in the car and this, that and the other, it’s not an ideal scenario.

“If he does the business, and I’ve got to say so far, he's been outstanding. I know that all the supporters that went up to Bradford in midweek, where they put as decent side out, he and Leon were absolutely outstanding in the first half when they played on Tuesday night.”

Meanwhile, Norwich City winger Yanic Wildschut, who was linked with the Blues among a number of other clubs yesterday, has joined Bolton Wanderers on a season-long loan.

Glad to hear it. Wildschut joining Bolton isn't good news though.

Great news, hopefully the price tag will put other clubs off. We need to be keeping our best players if we want to do well this season! COYB!

Hopefully no one meets our valuation!

Let's hope this figure of 8 million plus is true as it may well fend off any further bids from other teams. Well done ME if this story is true.

What needs to be done now is to open negotiations about a new contract. We need to tie the player down to a three year contract as we have with Bart, as we need him as part of our squad.

Like I said . Blades double your offer and you can have him.
Town DO tend to under sell their players far too often. It's about time we requested “ ridiculous” fees for them. Our problem would be getting a replacement - it'd be Murphy the sequel all over again. We have to keep our best players and ADD to them not gift them away as soon as any Vlub shows an interest!!

We are now below 3/1 to get relegated and third favourites. These odds are not plucked at random but calculated from investment, signings and departures.

ME/PH - Sign the frickin players to replace what we have lost/losing and dont keep going to.poundworld to buy the cheap rubbish.

Fantastic bit of news, Town Stan their ground, put the price tag on and say if you want him you know what you have to pay. Good news all round.

We would probably end up with the return of Murphy!

all this nonsense talk is increasing the betting odds against town winning the division 1, put 100 quid on town to come top and make a killing...

Wonder what a 10m player gets paid a week? Double edged sword.

Good to see a decent price tag on Martyn. I think that we would struggle to get a striker of his quality for 7m to adequately replace him. Having proven himself at this level he is integral to our progress.

Crucial that we keep Waghorn so pleased to hear this news. Goalscorers are very hard to come by and I fear if we sell him we might end up with a dud replacement...like others have suggested we should be building our team around him. Anything below 7.5 million should be dismissed as an insult...

If they want him that bad...they should pay the right price.

Pleased that the club are taking this approach, applying a price tag shows we wont be mugged off. Obviously demonstrates how important Horny is to us.

PJewellisGod: think I'd cry if that happened.
Strangely enough I don't see a traditional target man as Hursts style , do you?

For once we have the whip hand in negotiations. We do not need to sell and there is a queue of potential buyers. Make them pay!

@ Dog

"We are now below 3/1 to get relegated and third favourites. These odds are not plucked at random but calculated from investment, signings and departures. "

Bookmakers base their odds on how much money has been placed on all possible outcomes, not on the assumed probability of something happening.

sell waghorn and relegation looms. Goals win games and with out him last year we would be down....

Ipwich are currently priced as 3rd favourites for the drop, we are 3/1 best price to go down, some have us 11/4 and the current lowest price is just 5/2. If Waghorn goes those odds could be slashed even further. I know the bookmakers don't always get it right (far from it, just look at Leicester) but I have to say that is still a concern for me! We've had loads out and not many in and the clock is ticking. Paul Hurst might be a very good manager but we can't really expect him to work miracles with so few players. Mick operated on a budget but his squad was still a lot bigger than ours is right now. Still time to get business done but as I said, the clock is ticking!

Without Waghorn and Bart last year would have been an absolute disaster! Can anyone really see us buying a ready made replacement for anything under 9 million!? When players like Assombalonga go for 15 million too right we shouldn't expect anything less than 10 million for him! There also shouldnt be any of this "Well we'll give you 5 million now, another million when you reach 40 appearances, another mill if you walk my dog every day for the next two years, blah, blah"
