Town Turned Down Blades Waghorn Bid
Friday, 20th Jul 2018 11:20

TWTD understands Town turned down a Sheffield United offer for striker Martyn Waghorn earlier in the summer.

While news of the Blades’ interest broke only yesterday, the bid the Blues rebuffed came a number of weeks ago and we understand was approaching the £5 million mark mentioned in those reports.

Last night, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder said he wouldn’t be pursuing his interest in Waghorn, 28, as the Blues have set his value at £8-£10 million.

Reports from Sheffield this morning, however, claim the Blades are continuing to talk to Town with the Blues said to have initially priced last season’s 16-goal top scorer at £7.5 million, presumably at the time the South Yorkshiremen made their failed bid.

TWTD previously reported that Derby County, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City are also all interested in the ex-Rangers, Leicester, Sunderland and Wigan man, while Nottingham Forest have also been linked.

Speaking yesterday, manager Hurst, coincidentally born in Sheffield but brought up an Owls fan, said he had told Waghorn he wants him to stay at Town, while owner Marcus Evans is also believed to want to keep hold of the £200,000 bargain signing from Rangers.

Waghorn, who swiftly became a hugely popular figure at Portman Road following that August 2017 switch, and his family are understood to be happy in Suffolk having quickly settled after the move.

Sheffield Utd have already paid Brentford £4 million for John Egan, nice to see their owners showing a backing to get them promoted, but let's remember lots of cash does not always equal promotion.
Evans has had his fingers burned in the past, and will undoubtedly be apprehensive in following our fellow championship rivals by splashing the cash.
We should by know have had a few more faces through the PR gates as this squad we have will struggle especially if we have a spate of injuries like last season.

Sell Waghorn and we will be right up against it like we were the season before last - Starting on the back foot with no main striker when ME & MM made the stupid decision to sell Murphy and we never got a replacement.

Asombalomba went for £15M. Waghorn must be worth at least £10M. We let McGolrdrick walk out the door and he is one of the best Number 10's in the EFL. Just a shame MM kept playing him on the wing in his last season and you need pace to there.

Just need Waggy to come out and state he is staying and get a new contract drawn up. We can then move on from this. Fingers crossed he stays but if not we should have a good war chest to go get a replacement. At end of the day, despite his goals last year if he wants to leave he will and a 7 or 8 million profit on a player in one season is not bad going as a fall back.
