Wilder Reveals New Blades Bid for Waghorn
Saturday, 21st Jul 2018 19:29

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has revealed that the Blades have made a new bid for Blues striker Martyn Waghorn.

“We’ve got some targets, we’ve got that bid in for Martyn Waghorn," Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield following his side’s friendly at Mansfield.

"It’s out there now, it’s not worth not talking about and we’re looking to bring another two or three players in."

Has he had any indication of Town’s response? “No, it’s there, we haven’t had anything back off Ipswich, if it’s been accepted or declined. It’s there and we’ll leave it there and we’ll still obviously look to bring other players in.”

As TWTD revealed yesterday, the Blues rebuffed a bid from the South Yorkshiremen earlier in the summer, an offer understood to be below the £5 million cited on Thursday. The current bid appears to be at the £5 million mark in those reports.

On Thursday evening Wilder said the Blues had valued Waghorn at £8-£10 million, while it was later reported that the Blades had initially been told - presumably at the time of the earlier offer - that Town wanted £7.5 million for last season’s 16-goal top scorer, who they signed for £200,000 from Rangers a year ago.

Blues boss Paul Hurst made no reference to a new bid when quizzed on Waghorn’s situation after Town’s 1-0 victory over Barnet.

“There’s interest, I was never going to try and deny that, but the situation is as it is,” he said.

“He’s our player, he’s played 90 minutes today where sometimes in these situations we see managers or clubs pulling the player out of the game. If he had been ill today or had a little bit of an injury, not in the squad, that would have just fuelled everything.

“He’s here, he’s played and he’s very much our player until anything changes. At the minute I’m working under the understanding that he’s our player.

“We want him to start hitting the back of the net as he has been doing in training. He’s a great lad, you can’t get away from that and he has a smile on his face.

“But he has an edge and he wants to win. There were a couple of challenges [at Barnet] which were mainly frustration coming out but I’m not going to knock that too much as long as it doesn’t go too far.

“He wants to win. I’m sure they all want to win in the dressing room, but there’s one or two where that all stands out a little more.

"We’re trying to get to the young players and understand that when they get out onto the pitch they are equals and have to step up.

"They need that hunger and drive and to not be fearful. Wags is a very good pro and an example for the younger lads.”

“In fairness to him, I’ve seen players try that when it’s blatantly not on. It’s like, ‘What are you doing?’, but when he’s trying it, it’s on.

“That one today I thought was going in because he’s got that vision, he sees it and that shows an intelligent player.”

In addition to Sheffield United, Derby County, Middlesbrough and Birmingham have also been eyeing the 28-year-old, while Nottingham Forest have been linked.

Waghorn is effectively contracted to the Blues for two more seasons, his current deal running to next summer with the club having an option to keep him for a further year.

When did the board say; ‘we are flush with money and here you go Mr Hurst here's 50 mill to spend' There isn't even 5 mill, only what we gained in PROFIT from Webster sale. Players are replaceable. Waggy is good and I'd love us to keep him, however we could do a lot with the funds. We need 2 strikers and 2 defenders. I would rather get 4 players in than keep 1.

Yes but Shropshire blue: where have you seen ANY evidence in the last 5 years that ME directs that transfer income to future transfers? It all just disappears into the running defecit, with maybe a token 500k spent here and there.

Based on that trend, I'd rather just keep the player and let ME bail us out again.

It is really about if Waghorn wants to stay. If he would like a move back North then we should let him go. There is absolutely no point in keeping him should that be the case. He will always give 100% effort I am sure but his heart could not be 100% in it if he wants away.
We do need to just get a move on with bringing players in though. At this time I could not guess who are starting eleven will be but I am afraid we could be in for a rocky ride unless numbers are bolstered this week.

If they bid below £5M for him that is derisory and shows they do not rate him at all. If the new bid is also so low we should simply ignore it until the window closes and then say "we told you the price was £10M".

We need his goals more than we need the money. Look what happened when we shipped Murphy out.

Selling Webster for 4m Waghorn for 5m will only reinforce MM,s point that he was , fully acknowledged, excellent in the transfer market, but will give him another opportunity to side step the issues of treating the fans appallingly and playing horrendous football.
We have to sell....this is simple maths for our club , but what seems to be passing most of us by is that we are replacing with lower league players...and not being linked with any established known championship form .
I really hope PH doesn't spend all this money now and he keeps some back for January when he has fully understood what is needed to be in the championship .....he will no doubt come up trumps on a couple of players and their contribution and valuation will increase ....but he doesn't know and isn't known in the championship to pull strings on the right higher level deals......my belief is that when returning from injury's the players that weren't avaliable last season will be our stability ....once seen he then needs to bring in pkayers that play alongside those that have played at this level COYB

Whilst I agree that MM was excellent in the transfer market, something that very few people on here are prepared to acknowledge (or so it would seem), I can't see the problem in signing lower league players.
Webster was a lower league player (Portsmouth)
So was Bart (Notts County)
So was John McGreal (Tranmere)
So was Aaron Creswell (Tranmere as well)
So was Tyrone Mings (Chippenham Town)
So was Tommy Miller (Hartlepool)
So was David Johnson (Bury)
So was Freddie Sears (Colchester)
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Gwion Edwards moved on for a big fee in a couple of years time.
Ipswich is a selling club at the end of the day, it runs at a loss.

Yeah but for every example you give there, there's a Frank Nouble...

Don't get me wrong, I love Waghorn. However, you cannot turn down £8m-10m for him.

In my honest opinion, we made a mistake two years ago not selling Didsy to Leicester for 7m or whatever was quoted.

Waghorn is probably our best player at the moment, and we do need more quality in other areas. So if he does go, I do question where the goals will come from?

Some of you seem sensitive on the Waghorn bidding front. Is it me or I find it not a problem. I wouldn't want Waghorn to go but if so that's our clubs decision, and it ain't been great of late

We still wreak of no ambition...now depending on a 'fresh' young manager with different ideas and football philosophy whose done well in the lower leagues now and his dealings with players in those leagues. Will that makes us promotion candidates?...only time will tell but frankly I'd say not.

One things for sure Evans doesn't look like changing tack anytime soon, be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of weeks but I'm not holding my breath.

Don't get me wrong here, I'd rather he stays, but if an obscene offer comes in for Waghorn then I'd take it. His career to date has been inconsistent to say the least and there's no guarantees he ain't no one season wonder.
Personally pleased with the way things are shaping up on and off the pitch, looking forward to the season.

Asj30.....absolutely agree with your point....but you missed mine..,that list has been complied over 20 years ....not 4 weeks ......we need a balance that adds to the team....not is the team ....sadly we will always be a selling club ...but bit by bit....lest nit do a Gordon Brown and strip all the assists out of our team in the hope that cheaper , untried new ones coming in will replace like for like

He score goals....but not many,.....a bit inconsistent at times....poor first touch but excellent work-rate tho. He's a bit like the Dirk Kuyt of the Championship.

We are more interested in selling our best players than winning promotion. Nothing changes.

There are three members of our squad who should not be for sale for anything less than silly money. They are Bart, Waghorn and Dozzell. But if silly money is offered, we have to consider it. But it has to be the right offer. What if Derby offered Tom Lawrence and £3m for Waghorn, surely we should consider that. What would be unforgivable is if we sell Waghorn at any price without having already lined up a suitable replacement.

Waghorn is arguably our best player however ITFC have only ever won anything but weeling and dealing. Take the cash, re-invest bring youngsters through and ship out players unwilling to fight for the cause or who are constantly injured. No sentiment in business or football.

We still haven't replaced Dids up top yet ?
Also need some quality loans to cover Celina and Carter Vickers and permanent to replace Webster .
Going to be a busy few weeks at Town
