Hurst Expecting Busy Fortnight as Harrison Left Out By Pirates and Scunthorpe Full-Back Linked
Saturday, 21st Jul 2018 19:56

Town boss Paul Hurst is expecting a busy fortnight as he looks to add to his squad prior to the season opener against Blackburn Rovers at Portman Road. One player believed to be interesting the Blues' manager, Bristol Rovers striker Ellis Harrison, was left out of his club’s friendly this afternoon, while Town have been linked with Scunthorpe left-back Conor Townsend, who previously had two spells playing under Hurst at Grimsby.

“I hope it’s going to be a busy two weeks before the Blackburn game,” Hurst told iFollow after the Barnet match.

“I think today showed that we are lacking numbers and quality in certain areas. It’s not helped by the injuries - that we have inherited really. I think it will give everyone a boost if we could get some more players through the door.

“It does feel the market has been pretty slow. I’m not sure if it’s because of the World Cup or what but we are working hard and there are offers out there. We’ve got to see which ones fall first and take it from there.”

Former Wales U21 international Harrison was reported to be among the strikers the Blues are eyeing on Friday with Town’s opening day opponents Blackburn previously reported to be interested.

Harrison was left out of the Pirates’ friendly against Forest Green Rovers with manager Darrell Clarke refusing to comment on why afterwards.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail claims the Blues and West Brom are eyeing Townsend, who has already been the subject of a £250,000 offer from his former club Hull City this summer.

The League One club are said to want £600,000 for the 25-year-old, who is contracted for another year.

Subsequently, Irn-Bru has reported that Town are now the favourites to sign the Hessle-born full-back with a £400,000 offer anticipated.

Townsend came through the youth system at local club Hull and had spells on loan at Chesterfield, Carlisle (twice), Scunthorpe and Dundee United in addition to his two stints with the Mariners working under Hurst while a Tigers player. He moved to Glanford Park on a permanent basis in January 2016.

While on his first loan with Grimsby under Hurst, Townsend was named the Lincolnshire club’s Young Player of the Year.

Important time for Myles Kenlock to get on the scoresheet & show the manager what he's capable of so I guess.

Kenlock look ok today but for me Emmanuel caught my eye . He looked a different player from this time last pre season. He looks very comfortable on the ball , got forward and put in some decent crosses today.

Not sure why Waghorn was playing deep in our defending half during the first half??

Stand out players today were

Emmanuel
Nydam
Edwards ( excellent signing and will have Town fans out of their seats )
Dozzell ( oozes class : we're going to have problems holding onto him, I fear this season)!

Watched Townsend in Scunthorpe's home game against Southend and he looked extremely impressive

What does Townsend bring that Knudsen, Kenlock and Webber don't have?

Aren't there more important positions to cover?

@ArnieM Glad to hear that Dozzell is already starting to look the business. It may even be a blessing in disguise that he was unavailable last season and has therefore fallen off the radar for a while. Hopefully we can get one great season out of him before the big money clubs come calling!

It needs to be a busy couple of weeks as we are well short when you look at the matchday squad

Refreshing. Really like PH. He knows the squad isn't good enough. Quite right too. The emphasis is now on the owner to step up. Quickly.

CBs the priority. Strikers also needed. Two if Waghorn goes.

I have just watched some highlights of the Bristol Rovers striker Harrison, looks a decent player. Quick, good in the air, and a bit of a fox in the box.

Going by Hurst comments today whether Waghorn goes or not we need 2 centre backs 1 maybe 2 forwards if Wag goes & id love to see a creative midfielder even if it's a Premier Loan: I can't remember the last time we had a busy end of the window: as long as Hurst gets the numbers & Quality he needs by 9th August then great: next week would be great if Wag stays & 2/3 players arrive: I think Hurst will push Evans more than McCarthy on players he needs:

Would nice if we offered a contract extension to Waggy . What's good for Bart is good for Waggy , IMHO.

Mccarthy was slated and abused for signing players from his previous clubs . Hurst is being praised and encouraged by the town fans in his efforts to do the same . The difference between them is that Mccarthy was getting players of a better standard than, in the majority of instances, lower leagues which is where Hurst is going, his previous experience being there. This is not going to be a season without worry and concerns about the future of the club.

Agree entirely meekreech. The players he is looking at arnt going to cut it in the championship. This has division 1 written all over it.

The difference @meekreech is that McCarthy did this for FIVE years and signed over 80 yes EIGHTY players in that time which for the most were players who had been there at top clubs and dropped down not hungry younger players who want to prove themselves. For every Mick buying players from lower clubs there's a Burley and Burnley's record from lower leagues was brilliant. Some people are saying “Harrison?” I remember saying “who's David Johnson” turned out pretty well so how about giving this guy a chance?

For goodness sake, STOP F***ING moaning, our new manager hasn't played a competitive game yet, new signings, no matter how much or how little you've paid for them need time to settle in, to get to know the players around them, to build “on pitch” understanding, Ok, some of these players were being linked with & signing may ultimately turn out to be League 1 level, but PLEASE let's get behind them & give them a chance. If you're the type of person that believes Evans should be signing a £8m striker then, please just walk away & take your moaning with you, that is not going to happen at ITFC 😡 (rant over)

With Kenlock and Jonas at the club I'm surprised we are looking for another left back unless Hurst doesn't rate Myles, or thinks he needs a season out on loan.

I think we need another striker though regardless of Waghorn, unless Drinan, Morris or Lankester step up. We seem a little goal shy at the moment. An exciting prem loan a la Celina, Lawrence or Fraser would be welcome as I'm not convinced Roberts and Edwards will BOTH prove good enough... more doubtful about Roberts to be honest. Hope I'm wrong but I think goals may be our issue this season

We also need two centre backs... we need to replace smith and CCV. Jonas and spence can fill in but as we don't seem to be going three at the back we need proper CBs.

We must be patient.I was at the game yesterday and yes we do need at least for more players. In my opinion two more CB's and two Forwards.
I felt the team played well at times and the future for us looks very promising.Paul will be a good manager but he needs time to clear up the mess left behind by the previous manager.Between now and the transfer deadline many names will be banded about, some good, some bad.we just need to hang in there and hopefully get the backing of the owner as well to bring in the players Paul wants.
Let's just be patient, stop complaining about every name mentioned and just rely on the manager.

Not sure why we took so long getting a manager in so many candidates on this site could have taken the job. Let the man get on with it stop whining and wait for the season to start. We dont have millions to waste we just survive in all honesty let those who own and work for the owner use their experience and expertise and if they get it wrong un a couple of years then complain but just get behind them and wait the pot is half full not half empty

Martin587- what mess left by the previous manager? You mean the manager who with bigger all to speak of in terms of cash kept up mainly top half and never in fear of relegation? Sold a player he signed for £10k for £8m? Signed the striker we turned £7m down for on a free? Signed our top scorer for £200k who's now valued at £8-£10m? And the centre back we've just got £4.5m for? The squad is far from a mess. It lacks quality in areas because MM lacked funds. Some of you live in a fantasy land and think management is like a computer game!!

Monkey Blue,
That was my opinion and that's how I see it.If you are a Mick fan then so be it.Some of your points I don't disagree with but the style of play was another thing.

Monkey_Blue added 11:21 - Jul 22
Martin587 the style of play was MMs pragmatic choice. I don't disagree it wasn't great but it won us games and points where if we'd tried to “play” we'd have been blown away by teams with £60m in parachute payments. We had the 18th biggest budget and so always over performed. I think MM brought in good characters and certainly got rid of any bad apples. I chatted to Damien Delaney in a nightclub one night and he said “I had to get away from there, there were so many “c words” in that dressing room”. Hurst hasn't as he's said inherited a mess. I feel the time was right for MM to go but personally think with the resources he did a great job at getting more points than many with much more resources at their disposal. I'm not criticising Hurst at all and hope his approach pays off, but I'm struggling to think with no cash we will get better players and if we do have cash it will be down to us selling players at massive profits signed by MM.

Monkey Blue.
As I've said previously in principle I don't disagree with you.But as you say his pragmatic choice of football drove many fans away in the end.
By the way I don't play computer games.I have been a Season Ticket holder for over 50 years and never miss a home or away game so in fairness I think I am entitled to my opinion of what a mess is or isn't.But on that score we must beg to differ.

Monkey Blue says that we need two centre backs to replace Smith and CCV.

That is factually correct, but remember that the situation is, if anything, worse than that.

Chambers is hugely dedicated, but ageing. This could be his last season with us. Chalobah is on a season long loan. Spence and Knudsen can cover, but I wouldn't want them playing there permanently. That means that even if we sign two centre-backs this summer, we are still looking to bring on Luke Woolfenden and Chris Smith and/or sign more centre-backs next year.
